Volcano - Stranded Villagers ?
- Finchie (22nd Apr 2010 - 23:24:59)

It has been a while !

By the time you all wake up - I hope to be in the air and landing on Friday !

I was due to leave Vegas last Thu, and missed getting in the air by a few hours ! When leaving became impossible, we (me and a couple of work colleagues) started the "ashes" tour. From Vegas we went to Toronto and then New York. I was lucky to get a flight from NY, and had a few options on hold, covering Boston to Rome, and Toronto to Dublin. Failing that Miami to Istanbull appeared attractive.

The other option, was to reverse the tour, and go back to Vegas, then Tokyo, Singapore, Dubai and then a camel back to the UK. However I heard the only way to get a camel would be to trade your wife in - that wouldn't work as she was back in the UK. Even if she was with me - I hear they trade on a like-for-like basis, so that might not have worked ;-) (oops that will get me in trouble).

When it was looking like we could be out there a while, we explored the Queen Mary 2 option, the sailing at end April had 1,000 people on the waiting list. The sailing at end of May was also full. We explored chartering a plane - 45 grand for 8 seats seemed a little excessive. So then explored hitching a ride on a Cargo ship ! Luckily before getting on a very slow oil tanker, the skies opened !!

Did anyone else get stuck/or still stuck ?

Cheers, Finchie

We got stuck too. We were in Puerto Pollenca in Mallorca .Had 3 extra days in the hotel and then went on a cruise ship to Barcelona then an epic coach journey through Spain and France to Calais, then another coach which took us back to Gatwick and finally a taxi home in the early hours of this morning. What an adventure !!

Was stranded in Dubai for 8 days, and was staring down the barrell of a £4,600 fare on Air France when suddenly everything with Virgin Atlantic fell into place and was repatriated. A colleague ended up taking the 0930 DXB LHR lefgwith BA this morning for £3,500 yet there were 4 empty seats on VS401 at 1000 that they were not offered!! No sense.

Started out this morning in a Land Cruiser on the UAE / Oman road tearing across a hazy red desert, spent the rest of the day on Virgin Atlantic and am now about to retire for the evening and get some sleep now back in Liphook.

£515 mobile phone bill since Monday, too!

Perhaps we should arrange a volcano party when we all get back?

It was a very strange feeling when Europe was closed. I was due to leave New York last Thursday after a week's work in Washington and NYC. Have now just checked in for a flight tomorrow (Saturday) night, so should be back into Heathrow on Sunday - just 9 days later than planned. There are worse places to be stuck - at least you can't starve in New York. But I'm strangely missing The Square, Sainsburys, and South West Trains. And I never thought I'd write that.
