Space Balls
- Alex Cameron (9th Nov 2004 - 23:08:54)
Ruthless debate and healthy sarcasm have been lacking on here as of late, so what's needed is a interesting trivia we can get teeth into.
So i'll start. Interesting fact of the day - looks like America is planning on violating the 1967 Outer Space Treaty with its plans to militarize the solar system and gain 'space superiority'. Joke? Oh no.
"US ready to put weapons in space" (Guardian)
http://www.guardian.co.uk/space/article/0,14493,1345460,00.html
1967 Outer Space Treaty (US Gov)

Some other interesting talking points for us (from Slashdot):
Tesco getting into broadband and music downloads
Firefox 1 being released - IE officially dying
The rise of video-blogging
Why Liphook.co.uk doesn't have fun features like polls, RSS feeds and a forum 'karma' system
Leonardo Da Vinci's 3 wheeled robot cart
God i could carry on forever - not everybody's tastes, naturally, but a modest start...

En- contraire, Les-bian. The reason i do know about these things is precisely because i do get out. There is a world outside Liphook you know, and it can be a beautiful place........

I think you might be referring to my last employer, who produces shows such as "Babestation" and "Babecast". I built their TV channel for them - "Get Lucky TV".
Oh the shame....
So nobody finds it a little spooky that their is such a thing as the 1967 Outer Space Treaty?

Oh contrare fantastic family viewing. NOT. There is a similar (Blue TV or something) program on one of the channels that a guy who use to live in Liphook and went to Bohunt part presents. Now thats strange. I was just flicking through one night I wasn't watching it before anyone asks.
It seems strange that the treaty still exits since 1967 when we hadn't even put anyone on the moon then. I don't believe we did in 69 either.

Hi, "Alex" -
Just to bring a note of seriousness for a moment:
Did you know that the European Commission monitors much of the set-aside on farms by satellite? A lot of Greek, Italian and Portugese farmers didn't some while ago. French vineyard owners also got caught out.
Nowadays, those same satellites pick up people smuggler high-speed boats heading for Italy from Albania, and the permanenntly stationed NATO submarines intercept many of the illegal aliens and the smugglers.
As for the US - do you mean those same nice people who sold us Version 1 cruise missiles that, after laucnhing from Royal Navy subs (at £70,000 apiece) could only go down to the seabed! Reason: the US Navy forgot to give us the upgraded software. Now, there's a surprise. Not sure if we ever got our credit notes for the crap missiles though.

Why the quote marks around my name? Don't believe it is me?
So no, i didn't know that stuff - and to be honest i'm a little confused. What's 'set aside'? Not wanting to sound ignorant here of course, but its going to be unavoidable really...

Mr Ireland -
You have a short memory!
I thought you had said, ad infinitium, that you were a member of PITCOM - can't be right - PITCOM members know everything there is to know in the Universe. I used to help them write reports.
So, you must know all about set-aside and the use of IT in the agricultural world of grants, subsidies and fraudulent claims.
Hint: if you want to climb the greasy pole in Whitehall - go for EURIM after PITCOM. Much better high-level contacts and their dinners are far grander.
Toodle Pip!

Ad infinitum? A member of PITCOM i certainly am, albeit a very non-comformist flared-jean-wearing one ;) Although i can definitely certify that members do not know everything!
What's the details on EURIM? The greasy pole awaits.....
