Dog walking, summer months
- Sara (3rd Apr 2016  07:19:33)

I normally walk my dog in the Punchbowl or Ludshott Common but know that in a few months time, assuming we have a decent summer, adders are going to start appearing. Can anyone recommend any decent walks around Liphook that are more field-based, or at least aren't the warm open spaces combined with sand/bracken/gorse that you tend to find adders in?

Thanks

Sara, I can only recommend Chapel Common in Rake as Weaver Down has snake problems too. You can park in Rake or by the Cricket Club close to the Black Fox pub.

The fields along the back of Longmoor Road are good, where the Lowsley Farm development is planned. This is on the opposite side of the road to Bohunt School.

To access it you can either go through the gate at the corner of Griggs Green Farm down Longmoor Road or there's an entrance opposite the Catholic Church in Headley Road.

You do get A3 noise there but no adders!

A few years ago I narrowly avoided stepping on a small adder at Chapel Common on a main path. I took a photo of it.

Unfortunately I don't think there is anywhere in this area where you can avoid them. But rest assured that a local vet said that in his 20yrs here, he has never lost a dog due to a snake bite.

The fields behind Longmoor Road (Lowsley Farm) are indeed great for dog walks but beware. Up on the grassy bank there have been reports of many adders basking in the sunshine. I have not personally seen any in my many years of walking there but it's always wise to be aware that they are around in open grassy areas too.

I have walked dogs on Lowsley fields for many years and always avoid the grassy bank in the warmer months as I have seen adders there on a number of occasions and also know of dogs that have been bitten there in the past. There are also adders on the sunny side of the hedge by the footpath leading to Lowsley Estate as well as on the sunny side of the Church field by the fence above the A3.

Yes definitely adders in Lowsley fields though I continue to walk there with care. Lived round here all my life and saw my first ever adder in Popes field (the one opposite the Catholic Church - how apt) basking on the footpath.
I tend to avoid anywhere that has a serpent trail - Chapel Common, Iron Hill but a friend even saw an adder in Radford Park so I guess they are all around?

They are everywhere. I carry a piriton tablet with me in case the dog does get bitten.

Fit a bell to your dogs collar, this gives more warning to a basking adder , they usually strike if startled.

Oh dear I'd best take care in the fields - I tend not to walk in the grassy bank but will be a little bit more aware in future!

Thank you for all your responses and advice - they're much appreciated. I'm going to check them all out - and also the grassy bank in the fields whilst it's still cool!

Thanks!
