A3 Incident 26/03/16 18:00 GMT
- Jay (26th Mar 2016 - 20:22:28)
Awful Traffic as the A3 is closed both ways due to an accident, vehicle collision brought down Power Lines.
We were sat in a3 traffic other side of fence to Mercedes Garage.
Police had stopped any traffic trying to go back along Knockhundred Lane leading to Sandy Lane / Woolmer Hill.
Sat there for 2 hours, children desperate for loo. Decided to phone 101 to see if the police could assist in diverting the traffic back to the Hazel Grove roundabout and or the Knockhundred Lane. Totally incompetent phone operator who was glibly replying "So what, you think more police need to help with the accident?" When I spelled out that the traffic on the A3 could be diverted with the assistance of the Police, she said "we couldn't, well, we could, but we won't, you'll have to sit it out, or phone an ambulance if there's an emergency". They also would give no information about when the road would be opened again.
Decided to pull off the A3 asking a couple of cars to move, and it turns out the Police had let the waiting traffic turn towards Sandy Lane, but hadn't directed anyone else too!!!!!!
The other police were presumably sitting past the Hindhead Tunnel diverting cars towards Grayshott, but left the massive queue of traffic between Grayshott and Liphook.
(Sorry, rant over)
Sorry for anyone involved in the incident, I'm sure the emergency services are working hard to get the situation under control.

Just to say it's always best to call the Highways Agency when in a situation like this on the A3. Similar happened to me just before Christmas (and after actually), both times the HA were very helpful gave an eta for the road to be reopened and explained what happened. They may be called Highways England now!!

Thanks for the tip Sarah, I'll try and remember that. I always use their site for checking motorway traffic etc, never considered ringing them!

A similar situation ...
My mates children were stuck in another car on the A3, literally 100 meters from the Liphook turn-off.
They were desperate so we went up to find them by walking across the land adjacent to the A3.
Everyone stuck in the traffic queue was asking what was going on. Even those at the front of the queue had no idea, or how long it would be.
There were about 20 police and as many firemen standing at the front of the queue, but did not see any Traffic Officers.
It would have been good if those stranded could have been kept informed.
Julian.
