Old Thorns
- Deborah Bowden (7th Apr 2010 - 18:51:10)
Just thought that I'd let everybody know that Old Thorns have just put a note through my door letting me know of their intentions to apply for planning for 50 two bedroom holiday apartments which Hoseseasons have shown an interest in managing. They are holding a public exhibtion of the proposals at Old Thorns on Saturday 17th April between 11am-2pm.

Do we really need more hotel accommodation in Liphook?

As far as I understand it, these two bedroom chalet style cabins are designed for family holiday accommodation. As they will probably be self catering surely this will mean that the holidaymakers will use local shops and services for their food etc.
I would imagine that they would make full use of local pubs and restaurants as an economic alternative to eating in Old Thorns.
What is wrong with that?

This could be a good thing for Liphook. It will bring more tourists in to the area creating local employment. They will also shop in the local shops and use local restaurants. This could fill a gap in the local economy don't you think?

Paul theres nothing wrong with that! Whats wrong is the fact they are planning more buildings and putting in no extra drainage and this new proposed building is being being built right next to a natural drainage ditch which will mean even more flooding for the houses that back onto Old Thorns!

Oop!!! We were NOT aware about the FLOODS!!!
How do we help to convince them that this is NOT a good idea?
Mind you they MAY have thought about correcting the problem when they build?
Does anyone know?

I believe that any building application will have to take drainage into account.... scare mongering on the earlier posts maybe?? Local jobs are both welcome and necessary.

Apparently before the houses around Old thorns were built, there was adequate drainage, and apparently the drainage is an ongoing problem since the houses were built because the developer at the time put in inadequate drainage for the houses concerned... It actually has nothing to do with any of the building work being done at Old Thorns as it was already a problem. The field at the bottom has only had a problem since the houses were built 20 years ago and what has also happend is that a main line drainage ditch that runs right to the botton has been taken away by the developer of those houses causing the flow to back up the field. Also i understand that several of the neighbours have filled in the ditches in an attempt to expand their gardens areas which has also cause a problem with drainage. Please get your facts in order before you make serious deprovating statements!!!!

I'm a golfer and a member at old thorns and i am sick of the road being blocked by customers from the pub at the bottom of the lane when they have big events like the motor bike rally a few weeks ago... They parked the bikes on their carpark and then the customers had to park in the road making it very narrow and hard to get through, and when i complained at the reception of old thorns i was told they were not supposed be parking there as the road only has rights to pass and not to park. This is because in the event of the emergency services needing to get through this could prove fatal.... plus today they had a big marquee and with loud music and kids rinning everywhere all across the road, and again i could not get through... I had to put this in writing cos i am furious that this happens and i am also led to believe all the local residence opposed the road widening... and yet again without understanding the full facts... unbelieveable!!!! Old thorns is a wonderful place to visit and i think it is fabulous that they are expanding it so that more people can enjoy it...

I both agree and disagree in parts.
On the one hand, it is fabulous for all the shops and businesses in the village to have an influx of potential new customers. Of course anyone staying there will eat out occasionally, or need provisions that the in-house store don't provide (or are too expensive). On that note alone it would be beneficial.
In addition, the place already employs a lot of local people and that would certainly increase - chalet maids and housekeeping etc - so again, beneficial to local people.
On the down side, they should have engaged with the public and perhaps offered 'local' sweeteners (sponsored skate/bike ramp or something of that ilk? or maybe a reduced 'local' rate to use the pool for a needy group/charity?). By forging ahead with expansion plans they have alienated themselves and many will view them as 'the bad guys' simply because of non-negotiation.
All in all, weighing up the pros-and cons I think I am in favour of the holiday chalets - as long as they are no taller / higher than surrounding local houses.

Manda,
The problems have only arisen in the last 2 years since tons of soil were added to the field, nothing before that (18 years). So as I have not filled in a drainage ditch and live in the affected area not actually in the middle Liphook like some this is not a " deprovating statement" And you were the one the bought up the Deers hut you seem to be rather biased towards Old Thorns is there a reason behind this I wonder? ;)

Yes my interest in Old Thorns is that i regularly go there to the gym, play golf and use restaurant and other facilities. I find the place well organised and the staff all very friendly and only have good things to say about the place.
I see nothing wrong with what they are doing with all of their expansions, which are providing jobs, not just for the staff they employ, but for contractors used in building work etc.
Everything they do has to be done correctly... i.e with correct planning permissions and building regulations and therefore properly.
