- b girl (12th Mar 2016 - 09:58:30)

I have been looking at setting up a small club in Liphook for a few months.. not a disco but more a jazz and nice meals and late drinking.. members only.. anchor garage seems good place.. any thoughts.. bg

Just what the place needs in a growing place.
I remember The club in Petersfield and the place has never been the same since it shut.
Yes you will have your problems of policing and bad behaviour but and sure with the right management it will do well:-)
Good luck:-)

Dream on!

You would appear to have carried out very little research.

You will encounter numerous problems not least of which will be planning and licensing.

Re: night club
- paul (12th Mar 2016 - 12:57:41)

Hi, Sounds a good idea. How do numbers stack-up, how many members would you to be viable? Can you get a license to operate?
Does the owner of the premises agree.
Good luck.

Re: night club
- Sarah (12th Mar 2016 - 14:29:24)

I think it sounds awful to be honest. We are a village (albeit a growing one) in need of more general amenities. A large coffee shop or restaurant, not a private members club.

Re: night club
- b girl (12th Mar 2016 - 14:45:10)

thank you all... looking to buy place so numbers stack up... its so much better than some child club who dont even own place and think they can run a child nursery ..52k rent per year .. dream on....liphook is lovely place with lovely people ..i think would be a great location for this

- Michelle Cracknell (12th Mar 2016 - 16:45:36)

Have you thought about a similar model to Hemmingway in Haslemere. Cafe plus wine bar on a few nights?

Re: night club
- andy (12th Mar 2016 - 16:57:25)

If you read the posts about when the anchor garage closed. you will see the owners want it to stay a garage or car showroom and are not prepared to let for any other purpose

Re: night club
- Nadine (12th Mar 2016 - 17:19:45)

I think it sounds lovely...jazz nights would be great.

Can you provide some contact details? Worth a chat

Re: night club
- VS (12th Mar 2016 - 18:00:14)

I guess you are not a "local" or know much about the local inhabitants otherwise you would not even consider such a venture.

We are already well supplied with watering holes and eateries and so another potential trouble spot is doomed to failure.

However if you've money to burn - good luck.

Re: night club
- b girl (12th Mar 2016 - 18:57:02)

how long you lived in liphook .. my husband 52 years .. so shut up if not longer or are you some london yuppie who think they rule a once lovely village

Re: night club
- Helen A (12th Mar 2016 - 19:41:59)

Members only club
Do I sense some sort of strip club ? Lol
We are not in London we are in Liphook 😂😂.

I don't mind a members only jazz place I suppose may do the village some good I wouldn't go . But I'm not for or against this I don't care either way

Re: night club
- Ian (12th Mar 2016 - 20:05:22)

Ha ha b girl, lovely attitude with your last contribution, just the right welcoming approach to open up a business in the hospitality industry.

Re: night club
- paul (12th Mar 2016 - 20:06:56)

A 'Gentlemans' club sounds like a front for a strip/pole dance club, i think it has been suggested in the past.

Re: night club
- b g (12th Mar 2016 - 21:13:45)

thank you all...what ever comments... sorry not a strip club .. you have not seen me lol... would be all music but you out there been to "ronnie scots" will know a good night and what i would like

Re: night club
- Kev (13th Mar 2016 - 12:19:39)

Be careful how you word things... you have just ran a current local business down by saying they cant even run a child club.. You won't get what you want anyway but if you ever did you would lose a lot of support by making the comments you have made... Try to stick to promoting your own benefits and ideas instead of giving reasons why you should get it over someone else...

Re: night club
- Vicky R (13th Mar 2016 - 19:01:15)

I'm all for having a nursery in Liphook I havent got no children but would like to see the premises change into a nursery instead of a jazz club

Re: night club
- h (13th Mar 2016 - 22:28:10)

I think that as the above poster has stated the owners want to rent out their premises not sell to anyone. The licence also could be difficult to get, Hemingways have had a lot of complaints about noise/music from the local residents who live in the flats on the high street close by in Haslemere. Liphook square is a conservation area and has residents. The Anchor had to give up their music due to local complaints from the housing estate behind them. It would be foolish not to ask the owners whether they want to sell or not before offering Liphook a music venue you may not be able to deliver.
I do not think that the rent of 52k a year plus serious money for conversion would be feasible for the nursery school but they could always put in an offer!

Re: night club
- Bob (13th Mar 2016 - 23:07:24)

Commenting on Liphook talkback is like being a spitroast pig walking into a Lions den, all the same faces appear. Some bizarrely have names with 1 letter, too scared to identify themselves, much like they probably do in public, others change their names thinking their cleaver but essentially it a forum of keyboard warriors. The village has near 9000 population, yet you would struggle to find 90 different names used this year ( 1% of village ) even at 900 different names its still only ( 10% of village ) so its pointless.

PS, an sure the different names to ip's addresses is a funny one editor ? you can change your name but you cant change your ip as often even those without static's, you can reboot your router but most of the time you get the same ip, your actually lucky if it changes more than a few times a whole year

Actually most, not all, use their real email addresses

Re: night club

b girl

I think it sounds like a wonderful idea!! Take no notice of the negative comments.

Re: night club
- Lucy (14th Mar 2016 - 21:11:46)

As long as it doesn't become a hairdressers or estate agents, I'm easy!

Re: night club
- Max (16th Mar 2016 - 04:58:28)

Reading this forum one would think that the residents of Liphook were a horrible bunch, whereas in real life this doesn't seem to the case.

What it does illustrate is that there seems to be a big divide between the older residents (both in terms of age and residence in Liphook) and those who have either moved here more recently or are younger, and what is expected in terms of social amenities.

Like it or not the village is expanding with the new housing developments and the population age is starting to get lower. Liphook is a pretty village but its amenities are fairly woeful, and it could do with some decent shops as well as a bit more choice for night life.

I like the idea of a jazz cafe, although not really a members club, and agree noise would need to be managed. Sadly though I can't see this happening due to licensing, objections, etc.

Re: night club
- liz (16th Mar 2016 - 08:27:29)

Max

I see no evidence of an old/young or local/newbie divide on this post - apart from one person's comment - (and there is always one!). Unless you regard those wanting a nursery as 'old' - in which case you are probably too young to go to a nightclub!

Re: night club
- h (16th Mar 2016 - 09:13:28)

Hi there, having read the original posting B girl talks about setting uo this club "for a few months" only, presumably you have no intention of this being more than a " pop up" type of operation? I am presuming a lot but it may be in order to avoid paying any long term lease or council tax that way?
It would be unfair to the residents to do that!

Re: night club
- tony (16th Mar 2016 - 11:29:06)

There are a couple of possibilities here that I can think of.

First, b girl is serious about turning the old Anchor garage into a members only jazz club (and how would I know, just by an abbreviation, not even their full name on a website?). I would suggest for that to succeed it would need to attract a membership from much wider area than Liphook, probably all over the south in competition with Ronnie Scotts and others, I'm not sure if that's a good idea for Liphook's image or not. Certainly we've got the transport links, so we are becoming a hub, halfway between the sea and the city, which is why we began in the first place!

Plus jazz attracts a slightly older crowd, so I can see the attraction in a place like Liphook from their point of view.

Alternatively (or maybe as a fall back position) could b girl be hoping to buy this currently vacant 'white elephant' cheaply, scare all the oldies with talk of private members clubs and Ronnie Scotts, then we'll all be delighted when he/she reluctantly 'backs down' and agrees to turn it into flats??

Personally I think it's too prominent a site by the square to become a large nightclub. But rather that than another estate agents every time! Maybe a jazz café like the Pizza Express in Soho would be a good compromise?

Re: night club
- h (16th Mar 2016 - 22:27:57)

I came across a website for a private members jazz club in St pauls, London. It looks very attractive, fully soundproofed and built in the basement of a building three storeys underground! No complaints about noise! Cocktails and canapes were served. I think jazz would appeal to an older than teenage market, but for me, considering the noise to the detriment of the residents means it would not probably not get a licence there.

Re: night club
- CajunKen (16th Mar 2016 - 23:08:46)

Well b-girl, if you do get this off the ground I'd be happy to have my little band 'Thin Ice' play some classic rock and blues when you have those non-jazz 'blues nights'. Jazz is closely related to blues so we'd fill a niche. I'll be watching and wishing you success.

Re: night club
- Amy (17th Mar 2016 - 19:44:34)

.Personally if it was between a nursery or a jazz club I really think the village would greatly benefit from another nursery (or atleast a more stable home for one!) I may have a 2 year old but that doesn't mean I'm "boring" but with all the new homes being built I don't see how liphook is going to be able to cope with the increasing numbers.

The increasing population is starting to say town where as liphook is stil a small village with little amenities! I still miss the flower shop in station road that sold fruit and veg.

It is very strange to see the square with out the garage now though. I grew up here with my grandparents and am stil surprised how most places are shutting and being replaced with rubbish estate agents.

- Diane (19th Mar 2016 - 17:27:21)

Oh dear reading this thread it seems that there are two things Liphook is interested in. Nursery's and facilities for the very young and Care for the elderly in various forms. there seems to nothing in between. What about teenagers, young marrieds ,young mums. young dads, older parents dont they count are they not allowed to have any Fun. Yes there are various sports facilities The monthly Cinema, and the U3A clubs but something new and Daring would be good

Re: night club
- M (22nd Mar 2016 - 18:32:26)

Heard on the Liphook grapevine, the garage has been sold.

Re: night club
- liz (23rd Mar 2016 - 08:18:20)

Diane

There is nothing to stop any group starting any club they wish (well, within reason!). U3A as I understand it is not 'provided' by the local community funds - interested people have to get together and organise meetings etc. That is also true of many of the other organisations in the village.
