Sainsburys Fuel Price
- Mark (24th Mar 2010 - 14:34:10)
Why is it we are being ripped off in this community by Sainburys Fuel Prices.
It is a known fact that Sainsburys/Morisons/Tesco & Asda all buy what is known as low grade fuel which is the bottom of the barrel which enables them to sell LOWER PRICED FUEL (So they say), now this low grade fuel gives you less mileage per gallon and does more harm than good to your engine(EG- Couple of years ago when all those cars broke down due to a agent in the fuel, That was low grade fuel)
Now BP/Shell/Esso ETC Buy High grade fuel which is why they are more expensive BUT this fuel is better for your engine and gives more mile to the Gallon.
SO WHY IS IT SAINSBURYS ARE CHARGING THE SAME AS THE A3 SHELL @ 118.9 per Litre which is High grade fuel prices, Sainsburys in Liphook are now 2P more expensive than the Total Garage on the A3 at Hindhead which is 116.9 and the ESSO in Haslemere buy 1p which is 117.9.
They are doing what is know as supply and demand which is daylight robbery because they are the only garage in Liphook central,
TIME TO MAKE A STAND AND STOP BUYING FROM THEM

You can almost guarantee that any statement preceded by "it's a known fact" is in fact rubbish, hokum or myth.
This is the same old garbage peddled out any time there's a rise in fuel prices.
Supermarket petrol prices are lower for a number of reasons, but the quality of the fuel is NOT one of them. All pump fuel has to meet strict BS/EN regulations; which is after all good enough for Formula One cars!
Far better the correspondent look at what's going on abroad and of course inside the Houses of Parliament.

Actually it is a true known fact about the level of the fuel grades as I have a friend that actually works for the companies that buy and sell the oil, and the fact has come from the horses mouth
Read and weap and know your facts

- liz (24th Mar 2010 - 17:26:17)
You're almost right Nigel. It's the same fuel from the same refineries, but I believe 'branded' fuels (i.e Shell, BP) have additives at the post refining stage which protect your engine/improve efficiency etc.

But Mark's friend knows about this stuff so it must be correct. He works for the companies.
It's a true known fact and everything.

Re: Sainsburys Fuel Price

I didn't say that all fuel is the same; just that all fuel has to meet the same standards.
Of course the established oil companies want to differenciate their product by tweaking the additives to marginally improve engine protection etc.; (note; this is not the same as cleaner - it's just that the crap put into the atmosphere isn't cardon dioxide).
I also used to work for Big Oil.

Interestingly enough, in years gone by when the fuel co's used to offer 2, 3, or 4 star petrol at the pumps, tankers would turn up at Grangemouth near Edinburgh with 3 compartment tanks - then fill them all from the same dispensing pump! Fact!

Re: Sainsburys Fuel Price
- liz (25th Mar 2010 - 10:27:14)
So I can "marginally improve engine protection" with the branded oils. I just have to decide whether its worth the premium. No premium? - Not much of a decision!! I would suggest that with diesel the improvement is a bit more than marginal - how do those prices compare? - I'll have to go and look!

Mark, I am not sure your friend is right as my mates sisters best friend talked with her Dads friends wife, anyway her nephews best friend knows a guy who's sisters uncle lives next door to a postman that delivers letters to this guy who's brother works for a man who works for companies and he knows FACTS, anyway he said he is not sure your mate has all the facts.
But back to your argument the cost of Fuel is stupidly high for a supermarket, I guess sit comes down to competition if there is non then they can charge what they like

Driving around the country it is hard this week to find diesel below £ 1.16.9 (why dont they call it £1.17!!) Morrisons were realy cheap last month but they have crept up to 116.9 this week.
The worst thing is although you can walk to the supermarket or shop to save your fuel bill, all the goods have at some point been in the back of a lorry, and with constantly rising fuel costs that will push up the price of goods or the suppliers margin!

Simon
You are right. I still think that Sainsbury's were cheeky to put up their prices by 2p overnight, and the night before the budget. Thats life.

Re: Sainsburys Fuel Price
- Mark (3rd Apr 2010 - 00:01:08)
You are correct Stephen
Why is it the budget was a 1p increase in fuel and Sainsburys done 2p, because they are robbing us because they are the only garage in the village and they do not expect us to go else where to buy it,
Well ESSO in Haslemere is 118.9 and TOTAL Hindhead the same so for the extra 5 minute drive I know where I am buying and if we all started to stand up and be counted then we may get somewhere, as the saying used to go the customer is always correct

Maybe we should go to company house, get the home addresses of the over paid fat cats and start writing to them, let them know exactly what we think of them .

Re: Sainsburys Fuel Price
- Nigel Myall (6th Apr 2010 - 19:23:14)
As I suspected, within two weeks of the original post we are back where we started, only with higher prices all round. Tonight's survey of the local petrol filling stations showed the following prices:
Esso Haslemere:
Petrol 120.9 and Diesel 120.9
Total Hindhead:
119.9 and 119.9
Shell Liphook (A3):
120.9 and 121.9
Sainsbury's Liphook
118.9 and 119.9
THESE are facts.

Re: Sainsburys Fuel Price
- Mark (13th Apr 2010 - 21:45:52)
THESE ARE FACTS
Esso Haslemere:
Petrol 120.9 and Diesel 120.9 - HIGH GRADE REFINED
Total Hindhead: - HIGH GRADE REFINED
119.9 and 119.9
Shell Liphook (A3): - HIGH GRADE REFINED
120.9 and 121.9
Sainsbury's Liphook - LOW GRADE REFINED BUT ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE
120.9 and 121.9
NOT ONLY THAT was working in London last week and guess what the Sainsburys & Tesco near to where I was working was only 118.9 for Diesel
THESE are facts.

Re: Sainsburys Fuel Price
- Nigel Myall (14th Apr 2010 - 14:23:13)
Mark,
There is no such thing as low-grade petrol or diesel. The fuel either meets the BS/EN standards or not. If not, it cannot be sold and must go back to be re-refined. The only difference between branded and unbranded fuels are the engine protection additives (detergents) which are generally more technically advanced in branded fuels.
Note: technical advancement does not necessarily mean better for the environment. (Try google searching for fuel additives in lead-replacement petrol).
Other factors which affect the price of pump fuel include distribution costs and the infrastructure (petrol filling station) costs. There have been cases of "bad" fuel being sold at some supermarkets (not JS, to my knowledge) which was traced to poor filter maintenance in an effort to cut infrastructure costs.
Please, if you want to comment about the subject; either say "In my opinion" or research your facts. Trying to pass off opinion as fact merely demolishes your own arguement.

Here's some more facts, drove down to Devon at the weekend and from Wiltshire onwards on the A303 fuel prices were ranging from 122.9 to 124.9p per litre and hitting 125.9p in Devon.
Thats a West Country Fact for you!

Re: Sainsburys Fuel Price
- liz (15th Apr 2010 - 09:21:59)
Nigel
Earlier in this post you said that supermarkets do not sell lower quality fuel and have now had to qualify this by admitting that branded fuels contain more technically advanced additives.
In my view that is a higher grade product and I should not have to pay the same for standard supermarket fuel.

Now I know why there's no BP station in Liphook.
See this link: www.petrolprices.com/sainsburys
Quote: "In 2004 Sainsbury's struck a deal with BP and it is believed they now supply all of Sainsbury's fuel".

(From the Middle East - stranded, due to NATS no-fly).
Petrol locally spotted at 35p per gallon! Now I KNOW we are being ripped off! Mind you, it is naturally pouring out of the sand up the road.

Re: Sainsburys Fuel Price
- Steve Read (18th Apr 2010 - 10:50:54)
Now I know this is not a fact, but heard a rumour that fuel could hit over £.1.50/litre by the end of the summer.
Which will be nice!
