Griggs Green
- Paul E (8th Jan 2016 - 09:50:46)

I've lived in Liphook for 51 years and still have no idea why Griggs Green is named Griggs Green! Was there ever a family named Griggs?

Suggest that you go to the Heritage Centre!

I believe the name possibly originates from a very early copyholder or yeoman who once occupied and farmed the area.

The Parish Overseer's Accounts for 1670-71 list a widow Tribe OF Grigg's Green and the 1792 Parish Rate Accounts lists William Goodeve FOR Grig's Green, both suggesting that, at that time, Grigg's Green was a single property, there being no other entries in either accounts for Grigg's Green.

In subsequent years the name of that one property, or farm, has leant it's name to the wider area of today. This is only my opinion, I have no other information to back it up.

What I don't understand is how come the residents that live in griggs green they never put it in their address instead of Liphook?
