Crashing noise
- Susie McAuley (26th Dec 2015 - 06:28:59)

It was really loud yesterday and I can hear it this morning at 6 o'clock. What is it? Has the wind blown over a large tin shed that Santa brought someone?
I can't tell where it's coming from but I could hear it all over Liphook yesterday and it was louder than the ranges.

I've just worked out that it's stuff being tipped so I'm guessing it's the railway? It must be even louder if you live near line.

The noise is from work taking place on the railway line around Liphook. Network Rail are replacing ballast, and also appear to be replacing some sections of rail.

Network Rail did provide a letter to residents near the line saying the work 'might be audible' but that now seems like a bit of an under statement!

Hi there,

We live on Canada Way, and the noise has been setting off car alarms, so I agree completely with the previous post...this level of audible disruption would normally be a reportable offence!

We are not even that close to the railway line (so would imagine this would be why we have NOT received any correspondence to try to explain the noise).

Thank you for your explanation of what the noise is.

I now know where my anger should be directed at least.

If anybody has any additional information as to how to STOP this noise pollution at a reasonable hour today, then I would be unbelievably grateful!

Earplugs or loud festive music could be some useful ways of stopping the noise at a reasonable time this evening?

But seriously - you are not going to be able to stop the noise. They have notified the neighbours (clearly not as many as they should have), and these are the only 2 days of the entire year when not a single train is moving on the network. I would guess that most residents of the Canada Way / Maple Park developments were at least in part drawn there by the easily accessible commute to London, so you have to realise that you can't have your cake and eat it.

If you want a reliable train service within walking distance then you just have to suck it up and live with 2 days of noise while they maintain the tracks.

Can not believe that people are annoyed about network rail noise .Is your safety not paramount at least they are doing it when no trains are running Xmas day and Boxing day only. Also the value of your house is jointly based on a working train line so suck it up.Some people are just down on everything that happens when they have a couple of days free time.

Darned inconsiderate putting a working railway line next to our new housing estate. Estate agents never mentioned it.

Lack of notification is the main problem for us! Did they think only houses backing on to the line would be affected? We are the other side of the green and visiting family's dogs were terrified as noise was louder than fireworks adding to Christmas chaos plus the car alarms etc and we thought it was scaffolding smashing from the new builds. Thanks though all for the sympathy for putting up with deafening noise well outside sociable hours - wasn't much fun hearing it all through the day and night!!

Although I do not live in your vicinity currently affected, I do live within earshot of the railway line, and when there is maintenance work on the line, it is done during the night at the weekends and regularly wakes me up. There is no other time to do it, or the service would be disrupted. There is never any warning of this work. I do not think you have been singled out and although it must be awful to have that level of noise, I hope it will not last too long for you.

Makes one wonder, is there no technical solution such as a barrier to contain maximum noise within the works perimeter? Even if unusual or costly?

Perhaps.people moving into the village should their homework and see whats in the village and what works are going to be done on the railways and surrounding services ie gas water electricity. The internet is a wonderful place for finding out such information. And they have been working on the railway at night since september but not many people have moaned about that .
