Fat Cats
- Eneida Nelson (23rd Oct 2004 - 15:01:38)

I was interested to see in the Mail (sorry, Alex) the other day an article about a fat cat who was taken to the vets by its owner for slimming advice. One of mine is getting rather porky, so I was looking for tips. One of the vet's suggestions was that it should be taken for a walk everyday in a special harness.

Has anyone ever tried taking a cat for a walk!! And what would happen when you met one of Will's pooing dogs coming the other way??

Should I try this useful tip on the Headley Road or is it too exciting already?

The articles this week about Fat Cats in the Daily Mail and other papers seemed to refer to our own James Arbuthnot, to some extent, and other MPs, to a far greater extent, regarding their London living allowances of up to c£20,000 even if their commute were significantly shorter than ours. If you re-read Eneida's post with this in mind it seems quite funny.

Typical

Liphook and the Daily Mail go hand in hand - enough said

I'm flattered you knew i hate the Mail! :D) Is this the story you mean?

Good to see Associated have finally discovered the Internet - although naturally they're taking the lamers way out and using Oracle Application Server.

But is this news or an advert? Associated baby sister, Metro, is famed for just spewing out crappy 'surveys' or 'research' straight from the PR desk that help to get Brands into trusted editorial spots.

"The research for pet insurer More Than found almost 80% of vets are seeing increasing numbers of obese pets, yet 90% of owners believe their pets are not overweight."

At least its not the Torygraph...

Alex, since you want to discuss other topics apart from books why don't you start a Political Debating Group?

That should provide some fireworks!!

Being a retired vet I feel I should post my views on this subject. If you have an animal that is overweight it is imperative that they are aloud to 'mate' This may sound stupid but not only does mating keep the animal slim it also gives the animal a sense of well being. My three cats riddle, tuck and usher all mate with each other and are all slim (usher is the female and yes she isn't slim when she is pregnant).

Stupid you may think but if you don't believe me read my source of this information: The Oxford and Cambridge book of animal upkeep and Nurture. Page 123: obiesity in domestic animals.

Rory - with respect, how important is literacy e.g. spelling) in veterinary practice?

Re: Fat Cats

I'm very surprised by your advice Mr. Addleslop!!

Every vet I've ever met has positively encouraged neutering for cats, as does the RSPCA and every other cat protection society.

I think you are being very irresponsible.

I believe that cats are as important as humans, and have a spiritual quality that in some way benefits our lives. Mr Addleslop is only helping by allowing his cats to breed. Some people may view this as irresposible. However if he cares for his cats then I see this as totally acceptable. As long as he finds the litter homes then I have nothing against it. In fact if you have any cats needing a home, Mr Addleslop, drop me a line and i shall be happy to care for at least 4.

What a hlpful person you are. i can also possibly cater for several cats.

Re: Fat Cats
- Harold Rodgers (23rd Nov 2004 - 20:53:09)

Yes I also totally agree with Mr Addleslop as I too have cats, 6 of them, and none of them are neutered, so I let them mate freely and none of them are fat. So whats the point in buying a "cat lead" or harness and regularly take your fat cat for walks, when all you have to do is let them mate freely.

I have owned cats for many years and find this way for keeping cats slim and in shape the most effective. So you may riddicule Mr Addleslop's advice, but believe me it really does work.

Why does it suddenly appear that we have several cats up trees on the Headley Road??

Is retired vet Rory Addleslop responsible?
