Liphook as a place to live
- Adam (4th Nov 2015 - 17:13:40)

Hi everyone,

My wife and I and our two daughters are looking to relocate to Liphook and just wanted to get an idea from people who live there what the village was like/has to offer as we are new to the area.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I have already sent Adam links to other similar threads.

Hi Adam

I'm sure others will cover this better but from our family perspective, Liphook has been a brilliant place to live. We moved here close on 10 years ago after having lived a few miles away and not being from this area at all before that

We have always enjoyed living here, the tunnel changed our lives removing what was the Punchbowl problem 4 years ago

Its been friendly, absolutely zero hassle, great transport links (despite our occasional moans) and good choice around the village but always within a short drive too

I think we take Liphook for granted, better than haslemere etc etc and we would recommend it to any family

Hi Adam, where are you moving from? We moved to Liphook 4 months ago with our 3 young children and really like living here. The only draw back being we haven\'t been able to get our eldest into Liphook Infant school, even though we literally live within 100metres of the school. I knew my sons year group was full before we moved but I\'d been in contact with the school for months before we moved. We were advised we\'d be top of the list as we were so close to the school and we were, for about 3 days. Then that all changed, 2 places came up and 2 siblings got priority. We were really unlucky. The schools were an important factor for us in moving and I\'m not sure we would have moved here, if we\'d known that we couldn\'t get a space in our local school. Other than that it\'s a lovely place to live. Good luck.

Well a quick scan through talkback and you will see we are populated by some odd but generally harmless people. If you want to see veins burst just mention the words "parish council",

Easy access to fab countryside if you like walking, easy access to London and Portsmouth if you want to have a touch city life, good sports opportunities for adults and kids. Schools, which some complain about but on the whole seem to help turn out engaged citizens.

Like most places, you get out what you put in. God luck with your move, wherever you decide to lay the family hat.

A slow train once an hour, a bus which will take you as far as Alton, two so called super markets (a misnomer) inadequate spaces available in the schools to accommodate the growth in population and even more houses being planned, don't even think about moving here. I bitterly regret doing so.

Jeanne, you can always move away...please. Lovely place to live in.

Thank you Ian for your very helpful response. Not so easy when you are handicapped and. Just what do you find so lovely in living here. Fine if you can drive if not it is akin to being buried alive.

Truly sorry to hear of any handicap but very odd post

Especially today after yesterday's events

Liphook is a decent, peaceful place to live - Liphook in bloom for me and its supporters is representative of that community spirit

- Happy resident (14th Nov 2015 - 17:10:04)

Jeanne, given that the initial poster was asking about what it's like to live in Liphook, your initial post is more than a little harsh. You don't mention in your first post that you have a disability and do not drive, these are clearly extremely relevant to your experiences of living here! Instead of painting liphook as such a 'hellish' place to live, it would be fairer to highlight your experiences with public transport given your circumstances!!

As for schools... have you had experiences of these?? My experience of the schools in liphook are that they are excellent schools and do have the capacity for those living in catchment. What is happening is that those that live out of catchment, who have traditionally been able to get into the schools are now finding it more challenging. If a school is good then you can never guarantee available places when you are moving into an area, but places do come up. You just might need some luck, patience and persistence. If a school has lots of availability, that's generally a reflection of the school!!

So Adam,
Personally I couldn't be happier to be living in Liphook and moving here with my children was a great decision! However, I do drive and don't mind the inconvenience of the one slow train an hour (you can always drive to/change at Haslemere to get the fast train if necessary!). If you are not familiar with the area then compared to other villages it's not the prettiest one, not got the greatest of local shops and does suffer from fairly heavy traffic going through it's little centre. But IMHO it has got the most fantastic community spirit, with lots of things going on and if you are willing to put yourself out there you'll feel like you've lived here for years very very quickly.

Good luck with your decision.

Hi what can I say about liphook

We moved here last year we been here a year now my husband and I and our two children
Liphook is slowley growing on me just wasn't used to leaving my home town / county where we were both bought up since we were born a lot of years and had good friends and family.
I really don't think people actually understand if you lived in a area all your life in the same house nearly all your life then pick up and live somewhere else without knowing anyone untill you done it yourself you don't know what it's like . Luckily I get out and about now and love it
The schools in liphook and outside of liphook are really good schools and have great ofsted reports
Quieter roads I love and the countryside the countryside is beautiful in the summer . Devils punch bowl is brilliant for walking ( mmm not liphook but it's only up the road )
It is hard to get used to if you moved away from what you know a lovely area and we had all amenities on the door step including lovely pubs and right next door to the River Thames . A big shopping centre .
But yes I'm getting used to it and do like it and I have a job too I got that 5-6 months after I moved here

Good luck in your Descions :) I wish you all the best just to say if you moved to here you wouldn't be making a bad move

My husband, myself and 3 children moved here 5 years ago and have regretted the move ever since. 2 of my children went to Bohunt and 1 was bullied from day one right up till he left. He went into year 8 and was targeted by a local boy and his friends. The school seems tobthinknthat by making them sit and talk will solve everything, I'm glad he's now left and is doing really well. We have all made friends here but I wish We would of spent more time looking around the area. Drug dealing, drug paraphernalia left in the children's play park, people openly smoking drugs and taking drugs in public, fighting, late night arguments in the streets, roads being used as race tracks, neighbours from hell, that's only a few problems this lovely idyllic village has. Before you make the move just read through liphook talkback and you'll see many people moaning about liphook and it's goings on.
I'll await the replies from many liphookians who will disagree.

Jeanne

I am really sorry to hear your story unfold, although it is easy to see why it was suggested that you could move away if you don't like it here.

Your circumstances aren't representative or typical. I feel quite sad that you are trying to put someone off living here because of your own situation.

The original poster is looking for feedback before moving to Liphook so they could apparently, if they take on board your comments, save themselves from making a big mistake.

Perhaps they could take over wherever you have been sentenced to live when you move out

.

Obviously I feel sympathy for someone with a disability, but it is the lack of public transport which is the problem for all people living here who do not drive. Unfortunately the trend is to reduce the bus service not put on more buses. The other facilities are good, maybe better than some places, life anywhere is what you make it! I moved 22 years ago to the area, without benefit of family at school etc, did not know a soul, and realised it was up to me alone to create a new life for myself, be friendly to people, join clubs, volunteer and so on. It paid off and these days I am so busy I hardly spend any time at home. There is plenty to do in Liphook, if you just look for it!

I grew up through my teenage years in Liphook and then returned to the village when my children were small because it is such a lovely and convenient place to live. Yes the village has got busier and the small businesses have gone but that's a country wide trait not just a local one. Small businesses fail due to lack of custom and there is a lack of custom because people drive everywhere and find it more convenient to shop in bigger stores. We have a mainline station which is a huge bonus for a countryside village and the one train per hour is just fine, you have to plan your trips accordingly. If that doesn't work for you, don't live in the country. We have beautiful surroundings and easy access to the sea, the South Downs and the New Forest as well as excellent road links to major towns and cities. The schools are fabulous and are therefore full. That's also because children come from outlying areas to have the benefit of a great education in our local schools. The negatives posted on this site are things which I have only heard about and never witnessed. Fights, drug taking, bad neighbours, of course these things are in Liphook, they are everywhere. Good luck finding a community without them! They are certainly not apparent as huge issues on a daily basis. Liphook is full of friendly community spirited people who work to keep the village looking great. The businesses which remain serve us well and if you're looking for an attractive, convenient, safe place to live, you could do far worse than live here. I for one have no plans to leave anytime soon.

Hi, my biggest grudge about living in Liphook is the fact that Sainsbury have cornered the whole of Liphook as a sole supermarket and Liphook is now in thrall to them, unless you are prepared to go to Lidl in Bordon or Tesco in Haselmere , or if you are a London commuter so you have a train service close by. Otherwise there is little else here. We moved here in 1998 and so much has gone from this place---I can`t call it a village, it will soon be too big, neither can I call it a town since it lacks a decent variety of shops. My advice is that you look at Alton, Petersfield and (last resort-Bordon) as a place e to live. Liphook has been bypassed as a town worth investing in or developing. And the local councillors are RUBBISH!!

You might like to read the Bramshott & Liphook Parish Plan to get a feel for the history of Liphook and how the village can achieve sustainable growth through improvements to its infrastructure, and become an even better place to live.
