Police

Or rather the lack of them. I am sure they were very busy when we were knee deep in snow but I didn't see one police officer or police car over the whole period (and we were out and about quite a bit). It could be that they were dealing with emergencies and we were fortunate enough not to need them.
But despite how short of manpower they are supposed to be I was surprised, to put it mildly, to see two police officers manning a speed trap in the layby just as you exit Liphook in the direction of Bramshott at about 6.00 on Sunday evening.

I'm by no means condoning speeding but this doesn't seem a very efficient use of manpower. There's not much traffic at that time on a Sunday evening and it would at least made a tiny bit of sense if they were trying to catch the traffic going INTO the village. Where they were positioned, they would only succeed in catching some poor sap who put his/her foot down a few yards too early before the end of the 30mph speed limit. It seemed like the height of meanness, not to mention totally pointless.

here here! I can never understand why they don't try to catch people speeding INTO the village on that stretch

I agree re speeding. There seem to be only two spots in Liphook that are ever used and most people know exactly where they are.

There are roads with a far more serious speeding problem eg The Headley Road that are never targeted.

It really doesn't seem the most effective way of policing to my mind.

They are there because it generates more income than from drivers coming into the village, and its gathered from people who will pay without making a fuss, a bit like paying an extra tax really, and the Government loves that.

Well Liz, you were not looking very hard !

My husband who is a special constable for liphook, was on duty on the evening of thje first heavy snowfall in the square for several hours.... also helping out people in Haslemere road who needed assistance..

Re: Police

I was probably still on my way home!

Re: Police

Presumably there have been many RTA deaths from speeding beside that lay-by? Isn't that the criteria the police normally bang on about - injuries, not revenue?

Re: Police
- liz (21st Jan 2010 - 10:44:17)

Presumably also on the 'Old A3' by the sorting office. These lay-by's must be dangerous things. There's no lay-by in the Headley Road so you don't need a police presence!

Re: Police

If you recall, there had recently been a serious accident on that stretch of road when a taxi had been involved in a collision in the early hours.

The speed camera would probably have been as a result of that incident.

Re: Police

Find it very odd that anybody wants to use the village roads as attempt at the land speed record.

Strange that people get these fast cars, then seem to become budding Donald Cambells, for most men, it is only an extension of their manhood!

I agree that the police need to be seen, but also alot of these people know the speed limits.

Also while were having a moan, what about the amount of drivers using their mobiles, the majority being lady drivers, always amazes me how they manage to navigate the roundabouts single handed !

Re: Police
- Nigel Myall (24th Feb 2010 - 10:50:21)

It is an unfortunate fact of life (everywhere, not just the UK), that the majority of speeding drivers in town are locals.

Familiarity breeds contempt as they say, and this leads to overconfidence, both in the vehicle and one's own skill.

I remember very clearly from my travels around Europe that those areas where the speed limits were observed featured physical obstacles to lower speed, e.g. humps, narrows, cobbles etc; no amount of preaching or enforcement has the same effect.

This is something the Parish Council has some control over, so let's see what happens after the election.

Re: Police
- Geoff Plumridge (24th Feb 2010 - 17:39:02)

Mr Myall, do I take it that you support the use of speed humps, cobbles, and the narrowing of roads through the village, and would you be looking to support their introduction should you be elected to the Parish Council?

Re: Police
- Helen (24th Feb 2010 - 22:31:38)

parish council... nothing will happen. oh they will talk about it.. and have several meetings and agree to have another meeting to discuss what they could do if they actually got the guts up to to be proactive... and then they'll go and have a cuppa tea....

Re: Police
- liz (25th Feb 2010 - 09:40:36)

For the record on the police camera positioning. I drove past soon after the taxi accident, no -one hurt fortunately (if it was the same one) - but it was nowhere near where the police camera was set up and was - well outside the speed limit. An argument for extending the speed limit past the Hewshott Lane/A3 turning maybe but not for the positioning of the police speed trap on that evening.

Re: Police
- Nigel Myall (25th Feb 2010 - 12:15:05)

@Geoff

Yes, I do support the use of appropriate traffic calming methods. What powers the PC have in this area I do not know. I do know they can put up signage, but as I wrote in my previous message, that has little effect.

Re: Police
- Nigel Myall (25th Feb 2010 - 12:23:36)

@ Helen

Will you be voting?

To make democracy work one has to get involved. The defeatist attitude helps neither you, your community or the PC. If the next councillor is elected on a 10% turnout, what sort of mandate is that?
A low turnout at elections is to me THE most depressing feature of democracy. If I failed to vote an election then I would have no mandate to complain.

Re: Police
- liz (25th Feb 2010 - 13:18:47)

Getting a bit off topic - but people don't vote because they don't know enough about the proposed candidates - or even that there is an election.

If you don't look at this website or read the Haslemere Herald (and I suspect the majority of the several thousand people in Liphook don't) you would have no idea what is going on.

Not quite sure what the solution is. Shared cost/delivery of one flier with all contenders on it?

Re: Police
- Nigel Myall (25th Feb 2010 - 13:47:27)

@ Liz

Great idea!

Re: Police
- Dawn Hoskins (25th Feb 2010 - 19:08:46)

I'm not so sure that this is the reason for such a terrible turn out.

At the last election I delivered to nearly every road in the Parish (thank you to all my helpers!) and although most said they would make the effort - on the day only about a thousand turned up.

When we are paying thousands of pounds to 'numerous' officials to sit all day in TWO (unnecessary) different rooms in Liphook village - it makes you a bit sick to think about it.

I think the real reason is that people have no idea what the P'Council does or even who they are. That is what I want to change - lets get our faces out there so we are approachable. That way we can do what the parishioners want us to do - not what we think they MIGHT want us to do!
