Salt.
- Dawn Hoskins (10th Jan 2010 - 13:56:07)

I have been looking in every shop I can think of to buy a few bags of salt. Just to put by the front and back doors - and maybe the driveway?

If anyone knows of any shops that have re-stocked - please can you post with the info.

Many thanks

We had the same problem and thought to buy some dishwasher salt but found the shelves were bare.

So we bought two packs of good old Saxa table salt and sprinkled it on the front step and the side path and, hey presto, it works.

85p a drum from Sainsburys

Try it

Cat litter works a treat. It is quite useful under car tyres too!

Oh please Vics....don't encourage them!!!

There's an enormous shortage of cat litter in the supermarkets and I need it for traditional purposes......my cats refuse to out in this weather :)

Hi
We placed an order for coal and salt on the 29th Dec. It arrived yesterday (much later than promised - but I understand why)- only 1/2 the coal order and they did not supply the salt - but charged us for it!!

They are out of stocks.

We do have packs of Dye Salt - which works ok if any are still having problems getting some and you need smaller amounts.

I was made aware before xmas that Camberley Auto factors stock salt - so that is another place to try. Not sure if Country Wide have been able to get further stocks - worth checking.

Another option suggested by a neighbour is good old dishwasher salt - it's more granular too, so better than table salt.

Still can't find any.
Please post if you see any being delivered.

Rock Salt was being advertised for sale at the Rake Garden Centre this morning.

warning - dont try Coomers for salt. I spoke to them today and neither site (3) has any - and their deliveries keep being postponed due to the gov. directing salt supplies to the highways and council. They have 3 container loads now on back order - neither do they have snow shovels or any type of shovel to be exact. They did manage to get some supplies of dishwasher salt - but that went immediately.

Also phones B & Q Guildford - they are in the same situation as coomers regarding salt supplies, and interestingly they do not stock snow shovels anyway and what stocks they had of general shovels etc went on the first snowfall - so glad we did not rush out to panic buy (which is what someone suggested elsewhere) because it would have been a waste of time!

I think it fair to say that the majority of suppliers are in exactly the same position. Makes small village retailers seem not so inadequate after all.

Glad someone locally has obtained stocks. Good on rake garden centre

BREAKING NEWS

We have just obtained some stock of a product that melts ice. You have to make sure the area is clear of snow. Prevents ice reforming. It should be in the shop by 1pm today. This is a product that the rail uses because it does not corrode the metal. It comes in 10kg tubs and normally we would retail at £24.99, but its on offer for trial at £20.00 - not as cheap as regular salt, but it is a completely different product.

Phone 01428 725338 if you wish to place an order.

Regards

I think your just in time for the big thaw, tempratures due to rise this week and with the rain I dont think the ice will be around a lot longer

Re: Salt.
- Sue w (14th Jan 2010 - 12:45:44)

Neil

Are you very sure? Just because it is melting today - are you saying that it will not freeze anymore this winter?? I think the most likelyhood is that we will see frosts and with this thaw - or even rain and freeze product like this will be needed - never mind at least the shop has something.

Neil,

Aye, there's the rub.

Would that we all had the gift of foresight (and here I would include the Met Office) None of us would be standing round wringing our frozen hands!

I for one believe that we have not seen thlast of this big freeze. More snow expected next week. I shall be in for my pack before it all goes.

Well done Trevor & Sue and all at Liphook hardware.

Have ordered mine and my dear hubby has been dispatched to collect and pay for it. I to feel that we have not seen the last of this weather, dont forget last year it snowed in February.

Just the 16 day forecast is to get warmer this weekend up to +6 (thats not wind chill which will be lower) then within the next two weeks temp between +4 and +8.

I guess we will just have to wait and see :-)

Re: Salt.
- Sue W (14th Jan 2010 - 19:07:26)

Perhaps I should explain that this product comes in a plastic container - and you can use as much or as little of the product and save the rest.

Perhaps people should, for the future ensure they have some for the next time - whenever that is. Look after yourselves - dont always leave it upto others.

I too am sure that we will see more snow this winter, but fairly confident it will not be for as long or to the extent that it was and covered the whole of the UK at the same time.

Demand totally outstripped supply.

Thanks for the positive comment Dee.

Sounds an excellent product Sue....and actually at a much cheaper price than other 'ice melts' I've seen on the internet....I did check LOL

Well done you!!

Re: Salt.
- Liphook Hardware (15th Jan 2010 - 09:56:48)

Hi

Yes this price is excellent!!

In fact the 'salt' that was supposed to be delivered with our coal was exactly this product and just for information they were charging US nett (without vat) £20 - what we are selling it to jo public for with profit and vat added.

I was very lucky - as so often in business it is not what you know, what qualifications, experience, degrees or years of practice - its just good old luck - speaking to the right people, who know the right info - chance really. We have sourced this direct from the manufacturer. Cut out it would seem a few 'middle men'. Because of our contact within this business - providing they can keep up with demand we should be able to keep stocks going - but the price will not stay low for long.

Even if we do not need the demand of the last few weeks, we now have another string to our bow for the future.

Regards
