Blimey - No wonder nothing in this country gets done, everyone's too busy asking and answering questions.

You notice the one question missing to the Secretary of Temporary Traffic Lights "Where the hell have Morrisons/Transco disappeared to ?"

Well we foot the bill for it all with 25% of our salaries each month, so its always useful to check in and see if our investment is remotely worthwhile.

Miost people in the area (the ones i know, and that includes oldies as well) haven't the foggiest who our local MP is. Its amazing how the internet can give you a new perspective on a very old subject. Our guy doesn't even have a website yet, which is interesting considering its computer-literate people who will be potentially determining his future.

Saying all that, however, i've always had a good response when i've written in. He seems like a good man.

Alex how very magnanimous of you to admit you know some oldies - obviously a different species - very honest too.

I think you should run for parliament and become our MP (are you old enough?)

PR and Politics Alex?!

Alex as an MP... my god can you imagine the power!!

What? Like HE-MAN you mean?

Who has the grey skull?

Re: Liphook MP's performance stats

Funny you should mention being an MP. I'm the youngest member of the Parilamentary IT committee (PITCOM), and standing for public office is actually a goal of mine.

However i'm only standing if both you two (Eneida & Jenny) are my campaign managers :D) And yes i am old enough - nearly 26, so that makes me postively senile by today's standards. I'd run a fair regime, and i already have 50% of the normal turnout (2 votes), so i'm set.

I'm deeply flattered by the gesture of confidence, and Jenny you get a full 10/10 sucking up points! And i bet you thought i was going to take that differently too....;)

Hi Alex

Well I'd certainly be delighted to help run your campaign (and why stop at MP I'm thinking PM). After all the "grey" vote is very important and even though I'm not grey at the moment, close proximity to you would certainly do the trick.

However, we don't yet know where your inclinations lie, but to help you make up your mind just remember:

If you go for Labour it's obligatory to have a strange looking wife, whereas with the Tories a blonde ex-model type is quite acceptable. Hard choice!!

P.S. I'm still worried about these funny endings - is there a website that lists them all?

Eneida

Re: Liphook MP's performance stats
- S (15th Oct 2004 - 08:38:04)

Well, I think I'll be a Tory MP then. My only concern is that after seeing their conference on the TV I don't think one of them was under the age of about 90 years. How they manage to keep up with a model wife is beyond me but hey ho maybe it's why they live so long.

Here you are Eneida,

Re: Liphook MP's performance stats
- Jenny (15th Oct 2004 - 09:30:20)

Ahhh... back to the sucking up subject again I see Alex?

I would be delighted to be a campaign co-manager for you Alex and although PM seems a good place to stop if I was you I would head for total world domination. After all the position is up for grabs!

There is something about the idea of you being in parliament that makes me smile but i also feel a little bit scared at the same time!!!

Re: Liphook MP's performance stats
- Alex Cameron (15th Oct 2004 - 10:10:10)

Well what can i say? The cynic in me is convinced that this flattery is a way to placate and control me so i don't say nasty things to people on the board, but i can suspend disbelief just long enough to massage my ego nicely.

So Eneida, what would i need to gain the grey vote (seriously speaking, to bring us back on-topic)? Like all baby-kissers, my inclinations can lie anywhere - typically in the places that would keep me in power. Not sure about the wifey thing though, but isn't that a necessary arrangement for the 'family' image? Steve can be your 'man on the ground'.

Ambition is good - why stop at PM? By the time i've clokced up enough parliamentary hours we'll be part of the country "Europe", so EU president would seem a nice title, even if Tony Blair would have got there before me.

The statistics are telling - East Hants is a heavily conservative area. Either that or a swing area very disllusioned with Labour - the Tory majority here is almost twice of the liberals, with a very high turnout compared to the national average.. Bizarrely, the 'landslide' victory Tony Blair won in 1997 was with a 25% turnout, possibly one of the worst in living memory.

Seriously though - what issues would you need to campaign for/against in this area? Tetra masts? Roadworks? No pooping on the road? Less queuing at restaurants?

Re: Liphook MP's performance stats
- Jenny (15th Oct 2004 - 10:38:40)

Not sure if that was a specific question for Eneida but if you don’t mind I would love to stick my oar in with a few ideas!

I would like for you to campaign about the following things:

~ More organised traffic works throughout Liphook – as everyone knows its nuts on the mornings and there has to be a way round it.
~ Lower business rates to encourage more business into the area, therefore creating more jobs. Also lower rates for businesses or shops we don’t already have here to stop the on-going chain of estate agents and food shops that seem to be marching through Liphook.
~ Lower council taxes – know this is very unlikely with all these changes but even a way of making it fairer would be good. Make someone who earns 50k pa pay more than your average pensioner – it only seems right to me.
~ Tetra mast research – no one wants one of these at the bottom of their garden but at the same time they are up for a reason. Give people a better idea of what they are for and the assurance that they will do no harm. Not sure if this is possible – will have to do more research.
~ A more co-operative council altogether - one that doesn’t make you feel inferior because you are under the age of 50.
~ A better youth council – we can all complain about the kids that seem to run rampage throughout Liphook but all we do is moan – what do these kids want and what can be done to stop the lingering and damage that is caused by bored teenagers?
~ Lower speed limits in certain areas and roads with better police patrols to enforce this – even if this means volunteer or special police taking on these duties. I am sure people who live in the roads that people speed down would help with this kind of campaign.

Of course these are just ideas off the top of my head – none of it really applies to me as I don’t live in Liphook!

So is this something you are seriously considering then?

Re: Liphook MP's performance stats
- Eneida Nelson (15th Oct 2004 - 11:16:24)

I don't have time to list all the things that would appeal to the grey vote, but to look at the bigger picture, in a nutshell I would say "common sense" just about sums it up.

Less hype, much less political correctness and union with Europe only as a trading agreement - definitely not a political union!!

The only time Europe was ruled as one region, as far as I know, was under the Romans and under martial law. It won't work, trust me.

Re: Liphook MP's performance stats
- S (15th Oct 2004 - 15:12:11)

I'm still only interested in the models as a tory MP. I don't care about policies or agendas.

Re: Liphook MP's performance stats
- Alex Cameron (16th Oct 2004 - 12:00:54)

Looks like we'll be running against each other Steve. I remember there was a website detailing Tory ages, and the average came out at about 60-something. It is very, very scarey indeed how old some of these people are - but the paradox of having representation of young people by young people themselves is that everyone else in the house thinks they don't have the age or experience necessary to make the right decisions!

Interestingly, did you know why the conservatives are known as Tories, and that Blair was a member of the party for 15 years before defecting to Labour?

Some interesting ideas there. And yes, it is something i'm taking seriously as a long-term goal. Right now i'm not sure its something i have the necessary qualifications and/or time for it. Who knows where i will be living in a few years time - a lot of senior cabinet members don't live in the constituencies they respresent, Mandelson and Blair coming to mind.

I think i'd probably be classified as leaning 'centre-left', which would probably move me towards the lib-dems. I've always though of the UK as a country with conservative opinions, but a compassionate liberal heart.

Jenny - some thinking's definitely gone into that eh? The only point which is a non-starter is the idea of relative tax rates for different business types - the alternate view of it is that you're pernalising the existing businesses.

An area close to my heart is using technology to improve efficiency and communication, but that's for another day...

Re: Liphook MP's performance stats

Just thought i'd follow on from the posts about James Artbuthnot's failure to act with the SWT issues. I'm interested to know exactly how well he has represented the interests of his constituency as a whole, so here;s a heavily summarised record:

ID Cards - For
Hunting Ban - Against
Foundation Hospitals - Against
Total Hunting Ban - Out to dinner
Variable Tuition Fees - Against
All Appointed Lords - Against
UN resolution 1441 - Against
Gay & Unmarried Adoption - Against
Terrorism - Out to dinner
Age of consent for gay sex (16) - Against
Incapacity benefits means test - Against

The ID card issue is enough for me.

Re: Liphook MP's performance stats
- Eneida Nelson (11th Jan 2005 - 14:23:29)

Anyone who's re-newed their driving licence recently has already, virtually, got an ID card anyway! As it shows 2 (hideous) photographs, DOB, place of birth, full address and goodness knows what hidden info.

I've lived in this country since a small child and held a Brittish driving licence for years and years and all I wanted to do was change my address. However being born abroad I had to provide all sorts of documents and references and it took over 6 months of correspondence and a Police check before the Welsh decided I wasn't 'undesirable' (the photo probably didn't help!). So 1994 is already here.
