A3 Petersfield BLOCKED
- Editor (5th Jan 2010 - 19:08:04)
Just a quick weather warning.
The A3 at Petersfield is completely blocked in both directions it seems.
People stuck in cars have been unable to make or receive mobile calls because of the sheer volume.
If you are intending travelling south tonight - do so with extreme caution.
If you are expecting someone to be travelling on the A3 - they will probably be very late.
My son is stuck in it at the moment and is rapidly running out of petrol as well !

Update...
In 30 minutes he has moved 4 metres !
Vehicles have been abandonned on the A3 further south, he is expecting to have to leave the car on the A3 and walk the mile to MacDonalds.
Trouble is that I don't think I'd be able to get anywhere near there using the back roads - as I expect they will be blocked or impassable as well. So, he will have to stay there until the snow/roads start to clear - tomorrow ?
A3 will be a big mess in the morning.

Well, one hour later, he has moved to within 1/2 mile of the McDonalds roundabout.
Still has a dribble of petrol left !
A friend coming from the south has managed to get off and into McD's.
The hotel is fully booked.

Well he is very near to the McD's junction at Petersfield now. But traffic isn't moving again, so he can't get off.
That's taken 3hrs 30 mins from Liphook !

Well, he has just left A3 at Petersfield and managed to get petrol. No chance of getting futher south.
So he is trying to get back to Liphook on the back roads.

Final update..
Midnight - he finally got pulled back to Liphook by a member of a 4x4 rescue club - many thanks to them.
So, 6 hours after leaving Passfield, he arrived in Liphook - via Petersfield !

Why have'nt the services put a snow plough up the road to get traffic moving. There are a lot of people stuck there and some are running out of petrol to keep warm. My wife has been stuck now for 7 hours with not a police car or fire service anywhere. The local stations think everything is fine, it said gritters were out and sorting the problem, I can tell you there have been none on the southbound carrige way for the whole time my wife has been there.

Thank goodness he's home safely! That's a relief for you all.
I heard on Delta that snow ploughs are working through Liphook and Headley Road.
Also, winter fuel payments have been increased due to the adverse weather.
Off now to feed the birds.
Have a good day everyone!

I set off from Portsmouth at 5.45 last night and arrived home at 7.30 this morning! Mind you, that includes an hour's kip at the Shell station on the A3 at Liphook while I waited for the tailback to clear. The northbound side of the A3 was eventually cleared by the snowploughs but southbound is filled with stationary vehicles for several miles north of Butser Hill.
The Griggs Green slip road was blocked by trapped cars but the London Road exit was passable.
If anyone is thinking of driving today, just forget it!

Yes, my car will be one of those trapped at the Griggs Green turn off! I wished I'd carried on to the London Road exit but after 11 hours and at 5:00 in the morning it was time to give up and abandon the car.

it took me 5 hrs to get from cosham to horndean. i joined A3 at horndean, i sat for 1 hr and had moved about 3 cars cars along. I was still by the slip road so i followed other drivers and turned round and went back up the slip road to get off the A3. I got stuck on ice on road opposite Morrisons and some kind men helped push my car out of it. I then slowly made my way to my friends in Waterlooville. So after 6 hrs i finally got into the nice warm house of my friend. I left my friends at about half 3 this afternoon and took the chance of getting home and got to Liphook about half 4. I was one of the lucky ones.

I work in Liphook and was wondering what the roads are like there at the moment?

I have just returned from an abortive sales trip to rural Derbyshire via A6 and M1-M25-A3 and I can tell you that the worse conditions I encountered were from the London Road slip road, through the village and down the Longmoor Road where I was forced to abandon my vehicle.
I am absolutely astounded that nothing in the way of gritting, salting or clearing has been done in the village.
Is it worth contacting the Parish Office . . . will there be anybody there?
