Oh Good!
- LippyChick (8th Oct 2004 - 08:39:23)

At last something has been done about that eyesore at the corner of Haslemere Road that used to be Alldays, or as I used to fondly call it 'Somedays' due to the erratic opening hours. Kelway Law looks very smart indeed, lets hope that the nextdoor unit gets taken soon.

Now what to do with the charming offices that they vacated on the other side of the square. I thought carefully about what The Square would really need to fill that gap. A quality butchers? A cute little delicatessen?

Fortunately Thorntons have come to the rescue and answered the question for me. Sadly not a trendy Chocolaterie, but just what we need!

ANOTHER Estate Agents!

Now why didn't I think of that before!

Rumour has it that the next door unit is going to be Lloyds the chemist (but you haven't heard that from me!)

Re: Oh Good!
- lippychick (9th Oct 2004 - 05:50:01)

I heard that too!

Luckily that will make a prime site in the village square vacant, so we'll be able to have ANOTHER Estate Agents. Hurray!

Shame I don't want to sell my house just now

Like everybody else, I also would have liked something of interest to go in the old Kelway premises. In fact, for a moment I got excited when I saw the name Thorntons because I thought it would be the chocolate shop chain.

I seem to remember when my husband had shops in the past the council had a say in how many of the same trade there were in the town. Does this no longer apply?

How can a place the size of Liphook support all these hordes of Estate Agents??

- Alex Cameron (11th Oct 2004 - 10:32:33)

We could have done with a huge Anne Summers i reckon - something racy to get thre Dialy Mail crowd's backs' up. Just imagine the hours of debate about whether or not blow-up dolls should be displayed in the window-front...;) Whatever happened to the little Unwins?

Re: Oh Good!
- S (11th Oct 2004 - 11:31:01)

I like you idea. A soho in Liphook. Yes I can see that really taking off. Maybe NOT.

Re: Oh Good!
- LippyChick (13th Oct 2004 - 09:40:26)

Maybe this isn't such a bad idea!!

Why shouldn't Liphook have a USP....something that'll really make people want to come and visit. Estate Agents you can get in any old town...but naughty lingerie shops.....

Re: Oh Good!
- Alex Cameron (13th Oct 2004 - 21:55:02)

A woman after my own heart...;) Some might say that our USP is one of many other less flattering things.

i hate estagents. lets play a game.
each person has to sent a reply with an estate agents name on. nothing else just the name.

"Alex" Smith, I admire the irony, but the rest - I tried pathos, but it did not work in Liphook.

Re: Oh Good!
- Eneida Nelson (16th Jan 2005 - 15:22:33)

I noticed that Greenbanks Care seems to have moved into the old Kelway offices - does this mean the estate agents have been frightened away??

Re: Oh Good!
- Alex Smith (26th Jan 2005 - 21:16:47)

By what may i ask??
I would say that the care staff at Greenbanks do a very good job... if only more people like this were about

Re: Oh Good!
- Eneida Nelson (27th Jan 2005 - 07:49:03)

Are you deliberately trying to misunderstand me? Frightened away by people on the website not wanting another estate agent in Liphook of course!

I have the greatest respect in the world for care workers.

Re: Oh Good!
- Santana (1st Feb 2005 - 16:30:00)

Can't see any messages on here apologising for your haste in assuming that another estate agent was to grace The Square. For those of you who have not been in residence in this wonderful place for such a long time - Thorntons was an estate agent, pre-Kelway Law, pre-Halifax. Kelway Law removed their sign - to reveal - good heavens - the original encumbant's facia!

I am pleased to see that you acknowledge the good work done by Greenbanks!

What's all this shouting ..... we'll have no shouting here!

I can spot at least twentytwelvty of the original committee campaigning for the renaming of Liphook - Royston Vasey does have quite a ring to it!

Re: Oh Good!
- Eneida Nelson (1st Feb 2005 - 17:52:05)

If you knew all this information why on earth didn't you say so when this thread started in October?? That would have been grown up behaviour.

Re: Oh Good!
- rob (3rd Feb 2005 - 21:53:08)

I like the renaming of Liphook question. A couple of years back, I expected them to put signs up at the station saying "Sainsburys, formerly known as Liphook" [a joke for those of you old enough to remember "Sellafield, formerly known as Windscale" - which, thinking about it, actually worked quite well - except they'll soon have to do it again (Radio City, formerly known as Sellafield?)].

What about "The Hamptons". Has a ring to it ...?

I hope we can keep up the Chinese connection, though. It's good to travel down the Portsmouth Harbour line through Wo-king, Go-da-ming, Lee-fook.

Re: Oh Good!
- LippyChick (4th Feb 2005 - 10:13:44)

Santana

Thanks for your message. I confess, it's true, I've only lived in Liphook for 6 years so had no idea that there was once an estate agent in the village aeons ago called Thorntons. However I'm not quite sure how my original message requires an apology.

Estate Agents do a useful enough job and undoubtably we need them here, but there is a limit. I suspect that there would have been a similar reaction were it to have appeared that a sixth butchers shop was to open on the site. Your input would have been appreciated months ago.

Hurrah for Greenbanks, although truth be told it's rather a pity that the exotic lingerie idea has to be put on hold for a while

Re: Oh Good!
- Alex Smith (6th Feb 2005 - 10:52:23)

Carpet baggers have moved now too! Looks like the whole of Liphook is having a re-shuffle. What is going to take its place in Station Road. Any guesses?

Re: Oh Good!
- Alex Cameron (7th Feb 2005 - 11:37:45)

Lippychick - totally with you on this one. Until they move the estate agents out, i'd suggest LadyMidnight - www.ladymidnight.co.uk.

Royston Vasey? Good God. Which moron came up with that? I never understood how those carpet people stayed in business, along with Mr Happiness himself in the video place. A chinese restaurent would get my vote as a replacement...

Re: Oh Good!
- Paul Robinson (8th Feb 2005 - 09:54:56)

My prediction for a new incumbent to the vacant unit in Station Road once occupied by Carpetbaggers would be anyone who can afford the exhorbitant rent which resulted in the unit being vacated in the first place

Re: Oh Good!
- Barry (8th Feb 2005 - 10:59:30)

Does anyone know what they are building on the corner of Station & Headley road?(replacing the old derelict building that was demolished)

Re: Oh Good!
- Chris (8th Feb 2005 - 11:56:51)

yes...it's another estate agents.

Re: Oh Good!
- Freddie Dawkins (8th Feb 2005 - 12:05:02)

Barry -

A local developer has been given planning permission to build a block of flats and some houses. It will be in the style of Hanover Court (next door) and will have a similar entrance. There will be a one-way system for cars entering/exitng the development, with an entrance in Portsmouth Road and an exit in Station Road. The original plan was rejected and so was the amended plan, so what we'll have is the third version.

Basically, the majority of the properties will be small and not so expensive, which must be good news for local people who want to get onto the housing ladder.

It's quite a difficult site, because of the land heights and the traffic volumes, so it'll be intreresting to see how it progresses.

Parish Councillor

Re: Oh Good!
- Steve Read (8th Feb 2005 - 22:42:39)

What a surprise!
More houses, priced for people just starting out on the property ladder, the chance for local people to buy.
PLEASE! How many times do we hear this when the developers realise how much money they can really make all the ethical statements go out the window once permission is granted.
The old coachworks site was industrial and has been for countless years and should of stayed even broken down into smaller units there are plenty of small local businesses who would of jumped at the chance to move in from outlying areas to a more central location. As for traffic volumes the coachworks site functioned perfectly well when the A3 was pouring by.
Still you only had to look at the fiasco regarding the OSU Site and the extra commercial space that was meant to be alloted there and what has happened since.
