Vandalism in the Headley Road
- Paul Robinson (24th Mar 2003 - 08:21:29)
Customers using the Co-op / Post Office in Headley Road this week end will have noticed with dismay the scene of total devastation wreaked in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Every glass panel in the public telephone box smashed, the new Post office sign destroyed along with other signage to the Co-op building and damage to fencing at houses nearby.
Why we ask ourselves should this area be targetted?
Could it be that with the closure of Alldays in the Square, the Co-op has become the new rendezvous for those with time on their hands, and do the number of discarded alcopop bottles and beer cans littered around the area bear testimony to the attraction of this site?

Paul -
about 2am Sunday morning (yesterday), a gang of yobs smashed in the windscreen of one of my family cars parked on the verge outside my house in Headley Road, just down from the Co-op. They also threatened to attack my youngest son, when they saw him looking out, while he called the police.
One of them has been arrested and charged with criminal damage. As I know some of the yobs involved, and know where they live in [*******], I would not be surprised if it's the same ones who caused the Co-op damage. I am pursuing this and other similar incidents with Hampshire Police and the Police Authority.

Replying to myself: Good news. Officers from Whitehill Police station made one arrest and a person charged with criminal damage appears at Alton Magistrates court next week. I'll report here what happens.

Well, what can I say about the English justice system.
The one yob who finally admitted his crime came up at Basingstoke two weeks ago, pleaded guilty, and received - wait for it - a 12 hours attendance order. No compensation awarded, so I'm out of pocket for another windscreen (that's two so far and £350). Not even a parenting order against his mother, because she already has one on her.
This was not the first time he had appeared in court and I believe he has other cases pending.
Mmmmm.
