A3 litter - Silver Mercedes
- Andy (14th Aug 2015 - 12:57:58)
I just followed a silver/grey Mercedes saloon up the A3 between Liss and Liphook and whoever was in the passenger seat was merrily hurling out McDonalds detritus including cups still with ice in them and one large, brown, takeaway paper bag.
Nice.
Registration is W1* *OE (I have the full registration) and it seems that unless you work for the council or are a policeman witnessing them do this, there is nothing that can be done.
This is disgraceful, anti-social behaviour in my opinion.

Can you not disclose the full registration number?

Interesting - I didn't post this to generate any debate or prompt responses. However, I do think Liphook Talkback threads and the interest they receive are a good general indicator of feelings within the community and a litmus test for what people feel is important. Start a thread about dog poo and light the blue touch paper. Write something about driving through the Square or any local development and away you go.
So, people aren't really that fussed about litter on the A3 then. I'm astonished.

I think people are fussed about it, but it moved down the list so fast due to all the recent posts about Willows etc., I hadn't noticed it until now.
I see people doing this all the time, cigarette butts too... Somehow it is acceptable to chuck cigarette butts but I don't see why, as they are not degradable (plastic) and full of toxic chemicals too.
I've also been driving up the A3 on an early morning and had a burning cig butt fly at my windscreen!
I don't know why people think it's okay to throw rubbish all over the place, but sadly no amount of ranting will change their behaviour.

I think we have a bigger problem with litter than we do with dog poo, yet dog poo attracts more comments, I wonder why?
I am always astounded if I see anyone drop litter, or throw it out of a car, but what's the solution? Fines don't work as no-one ever gets caught, so more bins? I think it just shows a blatant disrespect for where you live if you happily drop litter round the place.

White Mitsubishi 4x4 WV14 WDC driven by a female in the Longmoor Road today (the old Longmoor Road). Just before 3pm today, the passenger threw a white box or paper bag into the bushes as they drove around the corner to enter the new Longmoor Road. Nice new car, driven by a litterbug.

How do you know the people driving these cars (apart from the old Longmoor rd comment) are from Liphook ?
A lot of traffic travels up and down the A3 all the time.
What do you expect Liphook people to do about this problem ?
I'm sure the highway department and police would not want people walking about the A3 picking up litter. Especially due to the danger of possibly being hit by fast moving vehicles.

The really disappointing thing about it all is that it's the same people all the time!!!.....
Being a taxi driver in and around Liphook you do get used to cars that you see driving round in a manner not fit for the speed limits they should be adearing too.
There is a 03 plated V.W Transporter with a very distinctive silver foam type curtain in the rear window, that will soon have a big accident, the way he speeds through the area.
Also a 02 Lexus 200i in Black who drives around far to fast.
Plase just slow down a bit!!!

Well, Freya, we can all sit around on our backsides and do nothing about this problem as you suggest. I take it you don't mind the detritus that blights the side of many roads all over the country? Alternatively, we can choose to do something about it by naming and shaming - i.e. calling out the number plates, makes and names of the vehicles of offenders in the hope that they are warned by the authorities and prosecuted if possible, or potentially shamed into not doing it again. If posting on here stops one or two litterers from continuing to do this then that has to be a good thing, surely?
Personally, I will be adopting the latter approach as there is absolutely no excuse for littering, either by hurling rubbish out of a car window or simply dropping an empty crisp packet by the side of the road. I think most sane Liphook residents would feel the same way.

Yes Andy,
I agree with name&shame on this subject but: as this is carried out by unauthorised untrained individual citizens - some caution is called for. There is a great risk of misidentification. The naming&shaming is a good idea as long as it comes with a big reservation health warning of a possible mistake of identity? How about video or photographic evidence?

Andy re your Quote
"Well, Freya, we can all sit around on our backsides and do nothing about this problem as you suggest. I take it you don't mind the detritus that blights the side of many roads all over the country? "
I have made no such suggestions .
I do not agree with people littering .It effects wildlife and makes the area untidy.
I asked two questions.
Q1) How do you know the people driving these cars (apart from the old Longmoor rd comment) are from Liphook ?
A lot of traffic travels up and down the A3 all the time.
Q2) What do you expect Liphook people to do about this problem ?

I think the suggestion being made is that by identifying the vehicles, then if they are local they may see this or someone they know may point it out to them. Either way if it just gets one or two people thinking about what they do then it is worthwhile.

The point of ''Name & Shame'' is that when the person sees his errant or criminal behaviour displayed in public - they will be shamed in front of their peers enough to cease the activity.
That is what he is trying to do - to shame the car drivers into behaving better. No one is suggesting picking up litter on the A3.
I agree that if a passenger in your car can film the behaviour that would be better, more proof, and it can also be sent to the police (although you can imagine how seriously they will take it!).

Liphook does get a lot of litter. Being a dog walker it's amazing what my canine friend finds on the paths of Haslemere Road on a daily basis.
I have posted this before, but my thanks do go out to a number of people I see around my area of Liphook who carry an empty Sainsbury bag with them and pick up litter on their travels - it seems the older generation don't stand for this nonsense. I salute you sir and madam (you know who you are).

I understand the name and shaming.
Also why you're doing this.
If someone is blatantly littering surely they will not care if they are named and shamed.
