Where you at the Wheatsheaf (Grayswood) on Saturday 5th Dec?
- phil (11th Dec 2009 - 16:52:59)
(An 'open' post, as it were ... )
By any chance, where you at the Wheatsheaf in Grayswood last Saturday?
If so, did you have a nice time? Good.
Did you drive? Did you park there? Car-park was a bit full, wasn't it? Hard to see in the rain and dark, wasn't it?
So tell me, if it was you who reversed into my wife's car and smashed up the front bumper and grille, why did you not have the courtesy to come back inside and tell someone? Were you proud of yourself, driving off leaving my wife's car smashed up awaiting her exit from a meal with friends?
Such a nice touch - you must know you ploughed into that silver car behind you, you must have seen the damage. £330.25 of damage, to be precise.
Merry Christmas to you too.

An "open" reply/invitation to all.
I thought long and hard about this is at it is just such a rubbish thing to happen, particularly before Christmas.
So I have an idea ...
Phil, why don't you see if the landlord would support a race night in January. I am not sure entirely how they work, only that I have been to one before and they seemed to raise a good amount of money and it was a hoot.
Make it a Mon/Tue/Wed (when typically no one has many excuses about other plans).
You invite your mates. I invite my mates. As many as possible who read this forum come (& invite their mates).
Phil, all proceeds to go towards your repairs. If we raise more - rest to the carnival committee.
We could have an fun slant to it with themed tables
- Parish Council in the naughty corner
- Dawn and a Passfield contingent in the opposite corner - don't walk though - otherwise we won't hear the end of it :-)
- Herald Editorial and journo team there to create a true and accurate record of the evening
- Finchie and buddies arbitrating somewhere in the middle
- Eineida and the book club (soon to be bookie club !)
- Gaffer and his Footie team (which is why it couldn't be a Friday night)
- Commuter corner ? You (actually we) could chat to each other ?!!
- PaulR, I know you have got lots of mates
- Karen, come and enjoy an event you are not organising (but bring the carnival committee !)
- The Liphook Crankers (only if you wear your lycra)
- Liphook Under 14's Footie team are well overdue a social (as I expect are many age groups)
The possibilities are endless. 100 people there, means we only have to "lose" 3 quid each, and in the course of having a hoot, well worth it.
Sainsburies could provide the sandwiches (OK, perhaps I a stretching the realms of possibility)
James Arbuthnott could be the compere and bring his garlic crusher - Come on James face your constituents. I cannot think of a better way to be forgiven than being involved in some "charity" work.
I've not been to the Wheatsheaf in Greyswood (and have no idea where it is) - Maybe a better idea is a local ? Volunteers ???
It's a win/win. Landlord gets some expected business (never know if it the wheatsheaf, they could use the profit for a security camera). Phil, you have a better Christmas with the thought that this event is around the corner. We all have fun and get to meet each other !
Phil, I am happy to help organise. Ping me an email via the Ed.
Cheers, Finchie
PS I know I am mostly tounge-in-cheek, so this is not a joke but something that would be great to happen.

Finchie, what an excellent post ... 10/10 .. !
I think you managed to summarise virtually every thread, group, opinion and issue within Liphook in one place - pure genius!!
Certainly made me smile, I appreciate the sentiment.
My (still upset) wife has now booked her car in for repairs, at my expense (?!).
But I think your idea of a quiz night (I have only been to one, a long time ago!) is probably the most fantastic idea I have seen on here in a long time .. !! Sod the car, let's just do the quiz anyway!
Kind regards,
Phil
PS - Have been investigating the used Hummer market. Could be fun to take one up The Avenue at 0835 some morning ... : )

Any chance that any CCTV could have picked up the culprit?

O.K. Finchie, you are on.
I seem to recall that when last we met in intellectual combat at the Millennium Hall our team, Headley Road Headcases, did rather well.
Let battle commence!

Carnival Committee ready to do battle. Although I will find it hard not to hijack the event and try and organise everyone. Sorry, I just can't help myself!

Hmm.
Have the words "race" and "quiz" somehow become interchangable? Or has this become two nights?
Great, two excuses - count me in. I don't know what table you'd put me on though!

Err.. Mr. Finchie sir, what happens at a 'race night' ? It sounds sinister.
It would seem I now have a personal interest as Karen has volunteered us carnival committee members to make up a team (who can say 'no' to Karen?), so I just wonder what we are in for.
The event needs a name - any suggestions? 'Crash in the attic' ?
Bob

I'm In - lets go for it.
Can it be fancy dress (in for a penny in for a pound!) Anyone refusing to dress up has to put a fiver in the pot......any leftovers to the ''Target Breast Cancer' research charity.

Oh you lot, hope you are going to be this good at team building for the Carnival Quiz next year. Fear not, I have already made a note of several team names and I will be calling you!!

I wonder if the LBI would like to enter a team...they are newly formed and have 40 members already so surely a small team can be put together?

Re: Where you at the Wheatsheaf (Grayswood) on Saturday 5th Dec?
- Finchie (20th Dec 2009 - 23:04:07)
Just checking in - and what a fab response. Looks like it could have morphed into a quiz night with fancy dress, which is cool.
Fancy dress - always a tough one. How do you pick a theme that spans all ages, and not difficult to put together (i.e. won't put people off). So here is a cunning plan - each team decides their own fancy dress theme !
Location: Just looked up wheatseaf in Greyswood. I think we would get a better turnout either in (or closer to) Liphook?
Dates: I would suggest one of Mon/Tue/Wed 1st, 2nd, 3rd Feb.
Bob - a "race" night is an evening of betting. Races are typically pre recorded horse & cart races (traps) from US or Aus. Often a bloke thing - and a quiz night would be much better. Nothing to do with "racey" night unfortunately.
What do we reckon - teams up to 8 people (help Karen - I can't remember - and where did you get your last quiz master ?).
So looks like we have teams from:-
Phil and wife - the reason behind this
PaulR - are you sure you beat us ? I demand a recount !
Karen F / Bob - not sure if that was one or two teams
Mike G - of course you can join us
Gaffer (Footie)
Suda - (LBI)
SteveR - the Victor Meldrews
Claire - (GIGT Support Team ?!)
I'll try and firm up venue options shortly.
Cheers, Finchie

Finchie
Happy to pass you details of our quiz master. I am slightly concerned that this event might trump my Carnival quiz which is scheduled for next April/May! So have decided that nobody will be allowed to leave on the night without buying tickets for the Carnival quiz - that is the deal......!
We had max 8 in a team.
Good luck!
If you make a good job of this Finchie you maybe recruited by the Carnival Committee - we need more men..

What about the Liphook Social Club? I think they already have a quiz on Fridays - I'm sure they wouldn't mind if it was hijacked........

Re: Where you at the Wheatsheaf (Grayswood) on Saturday 5th Dec?
- phil (21st Dec 2009 - 21:36:54)
Sorry, have been busy at work for a bit - a tardy reply from me.
Just to respond to some earlier questions, I don't believe it was done deliberately, but I do believe the other driver knew what had happened and chose to drive off rather than inform my wife (who would have requested an insurance claim, etc - presume the other driver didn't wish this to happen for some reason).
I have investigated whether this was picked up on CCTV in the area, but sadly it was just out of range of a particular camera. Almost caught them, but not quite!
Quiz night sounds fab - suggest it goes ahead, and perhaps proceeds to a charity such as Orchid Cancer (unless someone has already nominated - haven't had chance to read thread!).
Merry Christmas to all (except the person who damaged my wife's car and drove off - have I mentioned that lately?!)

Quiz night is a good idea and race night, but I take issue withe the personn thinking it is a male thing, I attended a race night at the millenium Hall and although men were in the majority, it was me who won the most money! As the prize money was a proportion of money bet on each race it was not a lot but amounted to about £20.00 I won.

So what happened? Did the Race Night take place in secret?
I'm sure a lot of people were looking forward to it but after so much initial enthusiasm it seems to have been forgotten.
Or did I just fail to notice it? A comment from Finchie would be welcome.

Blimey - my ears must have been burning ! I haven't checked in for a LONG time !
Sat here in Paris, with a few hours to kill and thought I'd check in to see what info there is about all the police activity on Saturday. What a fuss, Robert Dyas in petersfield do a special price on meat cleavers - I only bought a couple. Anyway will lay low over here in France until things quieten down ;-)
Good to see some activity on the website...
- chuckled when I saw the comment "Jana from justaskjana", as I thought I had missed the creation of a new eastern European state !!
- Dawn, never pay more than half price for a dominos, just tell them you have a half price offer every time you call !
My only rant at the moment is the flaming French. They cancelled my train on due to strikes. I wouldn't have minded if they actually gave me some answers, but every question was answered with a Gallic shrug. Only car left to hire was some clapped out French thing with very large windows, called a kangaroo. It drove like one. 2000km later, having popped down to Barcelona and bribed a garage for a tank of diesel, I had to drive through a demonstration. In my very large window I had a sign "the roast beef retire at 65, so 62 is pretty good, now get back to work you lazy frogs". Luckily no one could read English otherwise I may well have been lynched, however watch the news tonight and you might see a red "kangaroo" trying to get through the senate !
Back to the topic of this thread and your question Bob. My only excuse is the snow in Jan meant I lost a bit of focus !! Actually, a lot of focus. If I put as much energy into the quiz as building the biggest snowman in history, we would have been in good shape. Also I admit to being a good ideas man, and very poor on the execution !! What we need is Karen or Dawn to execute ?! (not literally, obviously. No meat cleaver jokes).
I still think it's a great idea !!
Help.
Cheers, Finchie
