Baby Chaffinch - Diane (17th Jun 2015 - 08:16:56) Found a baby chaffinch (I believe) in our pond last night, I fished it out and put it in a broken bird box and covered it up hoping to calm it from the shock. Mum has visited it several times during the evening. I checked on it this morning and it survived the night and mum is fluttering round the garden keeping an eye on it. I don't know if it can fly as it had the chance to fly off this morning but just wobbled around on the garden table. Any ideas as to what to do as the dog has now taken an Intrest in the chipping box on the table and there are several cats who may think it's an easy snack. Would like it reunited for however briefly with mum.

Re: Baby Chaffinch - Rachel (17th Jun 2015 - 21:09:34) As the mother is still attending, it would be best to leave well alone! Unfortunately many fledglings are predated at this time from a variety of sources. I know you can't keep an eye on him all day, but watching out for cats and dogs would give him a better chance.
