Trip Hazard Outside Liphook Station
- Miranda Rowe (24th Nov 2009 - 22:13:11)
I was coming out of Liphook Station at just after 8pm this evening. As usual, and not a problem, there were loads of cars picking up people, so I kept to the side of the road by the Station pub, but as I came round the corner onto Station Road, as it was dark, I tripped over the big handle of the pub cellar and went absolutely flying. As a result I've grazed and badly bruised both hands, grazed my elbows and knees. But the very disappointing thing was that everyone just walked past me and went on their way. It hurt so much I had to sit down for a couple of minutes to get my breath and get up. (And before you ask, NO, I hadn't had a drink, was just on my way from work in London.
In this day and age of "bonkers" health and safety I'm wondering why this pub cellar door doesn't have some kind of hazard tape on it, so you can see it in the dark.
I've lived in Liphook for only 3 years, have tried to integrate into the village community, and been welcomed with open arms by many people, but I was very shocked when everyone just walked by me - suddenly I thought I was back in a place that didn't care.

I feel really sad that nobody offered to help when you tripped over whilst walking home from the station. I am amazed that people just carried on their way home and you were not helped. It's a sad indictment of our community and I hope that some of those in such a hurry to rush on their way feel ashamed of themselves. I fell over a while ago in Lloyds Bank car park and Anna James came to my rescue. Falling like that really shakes you up - I hope you are feeling better now and your bruises are healing.

Very sorry to hear that you had your accident and that no one offered to help, that is truly disgraceful.
Have you considered approaching an injury lawyer for compensation?
Hope you recover well.

Sorry to hear you injured yourself.
The footpath there seems to blur into the property of the Railway Hotel, I wonder if perhaps you were technically on Railway Hotel property when you fell i.e. trespassing?
There could be many interesting facets to this, but just to clarify I'm sorry you got hurt and no-one assisted you, and perhaps the Railway Hotel need to consider if pedestrians (myself included) are in fact on their property at that point.
If the obstruction is on the public highway, that would be a different matter!

Miranda - very sorry to hear about that.
Those that walked by - be ashamed. Be very ashamed.
I am far from an angel, as I am sure plenty will testify, and have many faults (as my family will certainly testify), but walking/driving past someone in trouble, no way. Come on Liphook - let's look after each other !!!
Sometimes I worry about our society (but only for a few nanoseconds - then I get back to the serious things in life such as "will Jedward survive? " old news, "will Katie Price be evicted?", old news, "when is the next fabuliss get together?", Ha - got you there).
Cheers, Finchie PS I heard about an incident at the station carpark - a young lad reversed straight into a lady walking past. It happened a few months ago. Anyone know if she was ok, as it sounded very brutal ?

Think that there is a more fundamental problem here that hasn't been addressed and that is the issue of pathways for pedestrians outside the station full stop.
Work taking place now is to improve lighting in the car park and on the station but the entry/exit is appalling. With the works barriers up, it is almost impossible to see where you're walking as you exit the station via the side exit (when ticket office is shut) and the number of cars that are parking haphazardly all over the immediate outside of the ticket office is bound to cause even more accidents.
Think that pick up/drop offs should be more considerate, respect the double yellows and allow pedestrians some space to exit safely.

Thank you very much for all the kind wishes - am on the mend now thank you.
I felt angry and sad that one day someone could be in real trouble and no-one would notice...
And was very surprised, as all the people I've met in Liphook so far, are not the kind of people to walk past someone in difficulty.
I'm also surprised that the pub can have such a hazard so close to the pavement without some kind of fencing off or warning that it's there.... it really wouldn't take much to put florescent tape around it and on the top of the handle of the cellar doors. I will look into this, but not quite sure of the correct avenues to persue.
Thanks again.

Glad you are feeling better Miranda. Its a great shame no-one stopped to help but did anyone actually see you fall, Liphook is not usually that mean? I walked out of Liphook station last night and tried to see where you had tripped, but with the lights of traffic coming in and out of the station and the general gloom around the side of the pub I could hardly see anything.
It has to be said that the turnaround in Liphook station is extremely dangerous at the moment. You would think, at least while the building work is going on, there would be a specific route for pedestrians. Its tough on pedestrians obviously, but also tough on the car drivers as people come at you from all directions!

How awful, to find youself in that situation, and no one helped - but I supose you should consider that falling down outside of a pub - may not have given the passers by reason to think you had tripped by accident?

I think not.
The pub in question has closed down and is boarded up which probably explains why the lighting around the building is so poor.
