Bus to Royal Surrey hospital?
- James (8th Jun 2015 - 14:37:58)
Can anyone tell me if a bus runs from Liphook to the Royal Surrey hospital in Guildford? I have spent an age searching the internet but without any luck.
Normally I would drive there but this time I will be too drugged up afterwards!

There is no direct route except by train. Try liphook voluntary care, they might help.

After many years of doing this trip I can confirm that there is NO direct route.
No:13 to Station.
Wait
Arrive Guildford.
Walk to Friary Bus terminal.
wait
Bus to hosp.
None of the services link up and you will have to endure at least 45m at Liphook Station, and 30 mins at the Friary. Allow a minimum of 2 hours for the journey.
the return is worse orf course as you have to manage the walk on foot from the shops to the station whilst in pain and/or drugged up.
It really is an appalling state of affairs - particularly the walking. I think the hospital should run a hoppa from the railway.

Hi there I find it awful there not being a straight bus from here to the hospital
What if your older but younger than a old age pensioner
I think it's wrong there's no other direct route than having to get a few buses
I been by train before didn't take that long and got the bus from outside the train station
To find that my appointment wasn't that day lol silly me
Where we lived before the hospital I could drive there and be there within ten minutes
Total change living here especially when you have young children
I hope you can find someone to take you that day :)
Train isn't too bad but I would phone up for the times so your not hanging around
You get the bus from out the back of the train station
Not from the main town :)
Hope this helps
But I think we need more transport round here
And buses on weekend than being stuck in or my eldest whom don't drive being stuck in on the weekend !!!!
Annoys me it really does but I suppose we come from outside London and is busier obviously than here :)
Hope your appointment / op goes well x

It certainly is a long way by public transport if you are ill. You don't need to walk to the bus station in Guildford, just exit at the back of the station and cross the road. Most of the buses go past the hospital and drop you right in front of the entrance. Check with the driver. Buses are every few minutes.
There are certainly people who drive folk to appointments on a voluntary basis and as suggested, perhaps Liphook care can suggest a contact. Failing that ask at the GP surgey.
Have checked whether you would be entitled to hospital transport? Not sure what the rules are or whether Liphook is covered, but I know someone who drives an ambulance as a volunteer and collects/delivers home those who cannot get there any other way. GP should know.
Hope this helps.

hi there I have done this trip many of times...
infact I have to go tomorrow...
the quickest way is when you get off the train go up the stairs and go left (the backway) you then cross the road to your right and wait for a red bus number 4 they are pretty good about every 10/15 mins.this will take you right to hospital doors. then when you come out and want to go back to train station you need a red bus number 5 this time (the closest bus stop to the main doors)
and there is a bus stop just past the train station so when you see the train station press the button. if you buy a return ticket it will work on both buses...
hope this helps you kayleigh :D

Thanks everyone for your advice! So it looks like the train is the only way. Fortunately I am reasonably mobile so it won't be too onerous.
I used a taxi last year and it cost £30 one way - no use for those who need regular treatment or who are on a low income.
I had some quaint idea that a bus service connecting surrounding towns to Guildford via a major hospital would be a moneyspinner, but apparently not!

I hope all our District Councillors and our MP is reading this thread.
Having no means to get directly to our only major hospital by public transport is really disgraceful. Especially having to deal with the stairs when you get off at Liphook all drugged up and in pain.

I too find it very hard to get to RSCH.
The sad thing is, our little local 250 bus used to run all day every day, so when you arrived back at Liphook train station you could catch it and be taken home almost to your door.
Now we have a tiny mini bus which is too hard for most to climb up into. This service now only runs for three hours 10-12, and only Mon Wed and Fri!
Before long I can see it being removed altogether.
The 250 was a lifeline to many in the village but now the service is a shadow of it's former self, soon to go completely no doubt.

The 250 never ran to any of the hamlets so was completely useless for many of us. Very short sighted seeing as Passfield is only 2 1/2 miles away, Conford; Bramshott, Griggs Green, Hewshott etc even less.
I never understood the point of having a service that was so limited to such a tiny area. No wonder it was never used much and then had its services cut. So many more hundreds of people who needed it but couldn't have it!
People in charge of these things don't have their heads on straight!

- Ellie (10th Jun 2015 - 14:47:55)
I tried to get a referral to Royal Surrey, but was told I could not be offered an appt there.
The choices I received were Basingstoke, Winchester or Portsmouth, all of them further away and less accessible than Guildford.
Because we live in Hampshire, our District Councillors cannot get funding for us to get to the Surrey Hospitals. The funding for the bus services we have was cut last year. The fact we have a railway station here also means the bus service is not seen as essential.

Re: Bus to Royal Surrey hospital?
- Dawn Hoskins (10th Jun 2015 - 15:13:37)
Ellie, our no:13 bus goes all the way to Basingstoke - and no stairs when you get back to Liphook - so that's prob the best option.

Re: Bus to Royal Surrey hospital?
- James (10th Jun 2015 - 17:25:58)
Thank you Dave for your kind offer, I saw it too late but a relative helped out with a lift today.
My simple request seems to have revealed a great deal of frustration at the lack of adequate public transport. I suppose the overwhelming majority of people (myself included) use a car which means that the level of demand for a bus service is not sufficient to make it pay. Time was when that wasn't an issue but later the buses were privatised and profit became the motive rather than public service. Such is progress....

Re: Bus to Royal Surrey hospital?
- Rob (10th Jun 2015 - 20:14:00)
The main problem is cross border cooperation, we are close to Surry and West Sussex, with no cross border payments from County Councils.
Its they same for Haslemere Hospital. There is a bus to Lynchmere which will not cross the border to Liphook, because of this. If it came here we could get to the Hospital. Then if needed a bus to Guildford!

I think it is crazy that there is no bus between Liphook and Haslemere!

I didn't mention no bus to Petersfield. Buses from South to Liss, but then there is West Sussex between us and Liss!!!!

Big pat on the back to Dave Lambert for offering a lift to the hospital, nice gesture.
