cyclist accident
- karen (7th Jun 2015 - 18:31:09)
Last week me and my kids expierenced a very scary accident that happend on the a3 roundabout. A cyclist fell of his push bike on the road going round a roundabout and the car infront of me had to do a emergancy stop so they wouldnt run him over but lucky enough he was okay and all the other cars had to do a emergancy stop aswel atleast 10 cars had to. But should cyclist who is practices for their races should be aloud on the a3 with cars travling at high speeds??? I really think it is dangerous... sorry for my spelling etc.. very difficult on this phone to type..

I agree with you, they should not be on the A3. Now we have the the tunnel the road has a lot more cars on it, and the bike riders think they own it.

Totally agree.
Cyclists should not be allowed on the A3.
They can't be easily seen by motorists. It's incredibly dangerous.
I swerved to avoid a guy done up like the tour de france a couple of Saturdays ago on the A3.
The Counciil/Police should refuse permission for cycle races that take in the A3.
Madness.

I don't think the cyclists need permission as they are not motor racing.
It may not be very bright, but it is not illegal

Or how about you all learn to check your mirrors and actually look out for cyclists. Saying they should be banned from the road is ridiculous. How about we ban dogs from all public places, they can be dangerous plus they C##p everywere

More cyclist bashing hey, good oh! It's funny but nobody jumps on here when other road users do something but cyclists well they're a bad lot aren't they, it's a bit tiring 😀 All on the day that hundreds of cyclists enjoyed a fabulous day out raising money for charity on our local roads.
Is the A3 dangerous for cyclists, yes but country lanes aren't safe by any stretch of the imagination. Cycling on the road carries risk but should cycling be banned on the A3, I think not.

Dear m,
When the cyclists are doing time trails on the A3, they over take each other with out checking to see what is behind them. I have had to do a emergency stop due to TWO cyclist over taking another slower cyclist. I was blocked in and had no choice but to brake very hard, I was not speeding before you ask.
The A3 is no place for them to practice.

To be clear on my earlier post. I do cycle (a lot), and the one road I avoid is the A3.
I am not cyclist bashing, just stating my opinion that it is a bit daft
The lanes are far nicer so why use a busy dual carriageway?

To be fair that day that cyclist nearly put my kids through danger, as we was so lucky loads of cars didn't hit in to us for his silly accident going really fast round a roundabout and falling of. It wouldn't been nice to see him get ran over and for the driver in front of me loosing their license for his fault.
On the a3 they are risking their own and everyone else's life it shouldn't be allowed on the a3. Maybe country roads yes cyclist should be allowed to help slow drivers down.

If all the cars had to brake so severely then maybe it should be in question if they were driving in a safe manner.
Not sure if the fact that it was a cyclist is that pertinent to the argument; if it was a car that drove dangerously around the roundabout and nearly caused an accident, would there be a thread calling for the ban of cars on the A3?

Couldn't agree with Richard more. I cycle a lot and wouldn't go near the A3 - there's much nicer / safer places to ride.
Why not head to the M25 if it's ok to cycle on the A3? At least the M25 has a hard shoulder.

We had a similar scare last week just before the Liphook turn off as a lorry had to swerve into the right hand lane as a cyclist was in the left hand lane where the cycle path ends. I think this is where a young man lost his life earlier this year. I absolutely agree that us drivers must be attentive at all times but the speed limit is 70 on the A3 so cars are going so fast. I would be way too scared to cycle on it myself!

What I find amazing is that there is a dedicated cycle path along much of the A3 and I never see these speed bikers with strange helmets using the dedicated path. The council have to maintain the bike paths at our cost for these riders. Do they think it is safer on the main road or is that not cool as they pay road tax and insurance too (Not).

This thread is starting to sound like "I wasn't paying attention/was distracted while driving, and something unexpected happened, and I panicked".
What would have happened if it had been a deer running across? They definitely don't look. The A3 suffers from this.
There is something in the Highway Code about driving at an appropriate speed...

This thread should be compulsory reading for all the cyclists to remind them just how blinkered, dangerous and even downright vindictive a large number of vehicle drivers are.
How hard is it for everyone to treat all other road users as if they have a right to be there, as long as they follow the rules of the road.

My point is cyclist should not ride their bike round the a3 roundabout were cars are driving fast round they should use cyclist paths to cross not try and go fast like a car and then fall off in the middle of the road causing traffic and cars to try and hit into each other. Its rediculus. Am glad few people agree with me they shouldnt be riding on a3 road they should actually ride on cyclist paths thats what we all paid our taxs for.

I was driving to work last week, window down with a little " feel good" music playing when I took a wrong turn and found myself driving in a velodrome. Well, you can imagine my surprise when, after clearly indicating my intention to move to the outer lane a number of Lycra clad gentlemen (and, or women) riding vehicles without mirrors and clearly intent on beating me to the finish line ............................ Oh, hang on, as I'm writing this I've realised - My car isn't suitable for a velodrome. I am very sorry, I will go back to the roads where my car is, after having past its MOT, supposed to be :).

There are some complete morons on the roads.
Some are in cars. Some are on bikes.
However, 60 to 70mph motoring does not sensibly co-exist with 30 to 35mph cycling. End of story. It may be legal, but it's very dangerous for both forms of transport in my opinion.

- tony (9th Jun 2015 - 20:20:19)
Agree, the A3 is very dangerous for cyclists, more so than a motorway as it has narrower lanes and no hard shoulder, but the same speeds.
Talking about time trials, you can't do them on the cycle paths as they're shared pedestrian paths and it would be illegal and impractical to race on them. Time trials are dangerous anyway, they should be properly organised and a lane closed off where possible, maybe a rolling road closure. It may cost a little more in entry fees, but would be well worth it for everyone's sake.
As for cycling on the A3, I only ever do it on that last bit where they stopped the cycle path before the Liphook turnoff, about half a mile or so, did it today at nearly 40mph, it still worries the hell out of me! Unless I'm late for dinner and the wife is gonna moan, I won't do it otherwise!
