repainting of portsmouth spinnaker tower
- ellie (7th Jun 2015 - 14:09:39)

I occasionally look at Portsmouth News online. I was horrified to learn that the sponsers of the Spinnaker Tower, who also own Southampton Football club, want to repaint most of the spinnaker Tower in Red. If, like me you think it would look ghastly, there is a petition online at change.org imploring Donna Jones leader of Portsmouth. Council not to allow this. You can access the petition through The News website. Please also go on twitter and facebook.

Err - not sure where you got your info re Emirates owning Southampton Football Club - last time I checked it was Arsenal they were heavily involved with (hence the Emirates stadium), not Southampton.

Yes they do want to paint some of the columns red, in order to display their corporate logo which is all part of the deal.

I've got no strong feelings one way or the other, but I think if I lived in Portsmouth I would think more about the fact that I was no longer subsidising the visitors to the Spinnaker Tower than I would about what colour it was going to be.

Whoever is sponsoring it is irrelavant, I picked it up from the Portsmouth News the effect will be horrible in red and white, Southampton colours ? I am not up on football but it is bad taste to paint it like that. Please sign the petition

I think the idea has been binned. Let's hope so it looks ridiculous!

On a related subject...I am aware of a few Southampton FC fans in Liphook...so it's not all 'blue' in this part of Hampshire! COYR

Ellie

Red and white are the corporate colours of Emirates throughout the world - they had prominent advertising at this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix, all in red and white, so I think to Emirates the fact that some people in Portsmouth who put football above all else, see red and white as the colours of Southampton Football club is entirely coincidental (and I can hardly see them saying to Portsmouth City Council, OK, we will change all of our colours worldwide to pacify a small minority of football fans in your city)

If people in Portsmouth feel so strongly against red and white then I presume none of them bank at Santander, shop at Argos or buy frozen food at Iceland - all of whose colours are predominantly red and white.

Time for those people to grow up a bit I think - yes football is a great sport, enjoyed by many, but it is not the overall mantra which everything else must follow.

I care not a jot about football Keith, I care about the Spinaker Tower, and re painting it like that would make it look ridiculous. a landmark which can be seen from far away. I have no problem with the colour red but leave the Spinaker Tower alone.
Also unless the EMIRATES logo is also painted all over it, few people would realise it has been repainted that colour for that reason.

Emirates are sponsoring the
America's Cup World Series yacht race (ACWS) that takes place in Portsmouth 23-26 July 2015 and 21–24 July 2016.
So that's probably the reason they wish to paint the spinnaker tower In their Red and white colours.
It's nothing to do with Football supporters.
