Can anyone recommend a good local builder?
- Sooze (20th Nov 2009 - 14:33:38)

Please could anyone recommend a good, reliable local builder who does not charge the 'earth'?

Thanks.

Hello

I can recommend Giles Chubb, from Period Brick & Stonework, based just up the road in Beacon Hill. He's very good and reliable with fair prices. Contact details are on their website, but phone number is 07516 816058.

They have a website:

http://periodbrickandstonework.com/

Hope that helps

why is it that everyone automatically assumes that the building trade is expensive ie "charge the earth".The people that are in this industry have to earn a decent living just like anybody else. We all have the same bills and living expenses. And 9 times out of 10 they have to beg to be paid after the work is done. Because of your comment i would hesitate to rec comend anyone as it sounds like you are after something for nothing. Be grown up, get three quotes ask for references and assuming that these are ok pick the middle quote. Simple.Alternatively appoint an architect and get him to appoint a builder.

Dave, I can understand why people ask for the right price but I agree with you that best way forward is get some quotes. I do think the building trade has in the past been abused by some but I think with the hard times as they are only good reliable builders are left.

I got three quotes for an extension that I had done a couple of years ago and one was £15k more than anyone else and when I asked why I was told due to steal work, 2 RSJ's which cost me in the end £250.

I woudl say there are many good builders in Liphook so I dont think you have to go any further to find one.

Good Luck

Hi

Recently I was made aware of this Liphook business - it seems to have personal references for most of its businesses. They may be able to help you with an easier search. Let me know how you get on.

Change the above info.

I have just tried to find local builders - there are none listed. In fact the site has little in the way of local trade. Perhaps it needs time to grow more clients?

Have a look at www.checkatrade.com. This site includes customers' ratings.

I found a builder called Resimix Ltd at Liss through this site and have used them twice recently with very satisfactory results.

I personally would pick a builder who belonged to the federation of master builders, or pick a RIBA architect to use who would always have a list of builders handy for you.

Also, it depends on the size of the job. whether you want an internal wall knocked down // a new porch, or a new basement // a total re-build. Let us know.

My husband is a civil (structural) engineer and has worked with many many builders and architects over the years. I can get him to recommend some good local people. You do have to be prepared to pay at the end of the day however, as Dave said, use the advice you have received here, get three prices, always ask for details of previous jobs and whether you can see them.

Hi

I can absolutely rate Steve Edwards who has done both big and small projects for us this past year. Not only reasonable rates, he knows that people are on budgets and does his best to give value. Really pleased to have found him and after years of bad experiences, am just relieved to have met someone of his ilk!

Cheers,
Sumi

I can highly recommend Giles Chubb from periodbrick and stonework - Beacon Hill. He built my two storey extension two years ago. He is reliable and takes great pride in his work.
