desperate to get into IT
- d.kingshott (8th May 2015 - 09:45:05)
Hi,
Was wondering if there is anybody within IT, (preferably the maintenance side) who is looking for an apprentice or trainee?
I am computer literate, can use excel, and all other office tools. Have helped construct desktop computers from scratch, lighting and sound programming, have had little but some programming experience, and generally have a set of skills worth building on, and developing to a professional standard.
Currently and regrettably I hold no qualifications in I.T, however would like to emphasise how little this reflects on my knowledge and handling of I.T. Equipment and I.T. In general.
I am currently working as a chef due to coincidence, and feel at the grand age of 21, I should be building a career that I am passionate about, rather than just to get by. Id also like to build the career which will shape the rest of my life.
Cheers for reading, even a little advice or nudges in the right direction are appreciated!

I work for a large UK computer services company. If you want an entry level job with a large PLC, and career progression, lookup an Agency called "Kellys" as we use them for entry level recruitment.
Without experience, it can be more of a challenge, but apply for everything you see advertised.
Eventually someone will give you a break.
I know from experience that recruiting good quality candidates is tough.
Have you thought of volunteering for a charity to help with their IT to gain experience?

Assume you've checked websites for large companies with in-house IT departments? IBM and such like have apprentice schemes and not just for graduates - think you would struggle to get to their sites using public transport though.
Good luck with your search - don't give up. Someone will appreciate experience rather than paper qualifications.

Hi, I run a web development agency and whilst we're not recruiting right now (plus we're based in Bristol!) but I'd highly recommend if you can get into web programming you'll be very much in demand.
There's a huge skills gap at the moment in good, solid programmers in things like PHP, Ruby on Rails, JavaScript and 'front end' HTML / CSS skills. Likely to be the case for some time as well - my agency is currently engaging with several universities in the south west and the Dept of Education to try and address the situation, but it's going to take some time.
