After the horrendous earthquake disaster in Nepal, The Gurkha Durbar is set to host a fund raising collection on their stall at the next Grayshott Market on May 16.
The Gurkha Durbar is owned by Mani Rai and his wife Sudha, both of Nepalese descent. Mani had considerable disaster management experience when serving with the Gurkhas coordinating the disaster in Haiti in 2010.
Commenting on the fund raising for Nepal initiative, he said that providing money was simply the best way to show support. From his experience money gave relief organisations the flexibility to source what was most required such as temporary buildings, medicines and specialist machinery. “In such disasters, the generosity of mankind comes to the fore, but in Haiti, we were hindered and somewhat overwhelmed by the enormous tide of clothing and other well meant donations coming from all corners of the world. They unfortunately clogged up the system and made the delivery of essentials such as medicine and specialist search equipment harder to get through.”
“Not only are we going to host the fund raising collection on our stall in the Market, but we have already started the collection in our restaurant for anyone wishing to donate” adds Mani.
To show its support for the Gurkha Durbar’s initiative, the Square Events Group, organiser of the Grayshott Market, is donating £250.00
All funds raised will be given to The Gurkha Welfare Trust who will channel the funds to the Gurkha Regiments deployed in Nepal. The rationale behind this is that with their cultural awareness, language skills and coordination through the British Embassy in Kathmandu the Gurkha soldiers are best placed to deliver the relief effort.
“Rev Moray Thomas, Chairman of the Square Events Group adds his thoughts. “Many people in Grayshott help make our Saturday Market a success, and it has been part of the aim from the beginning to be able to support charitable causes. With close links in the village to Nepal through Mani and Sudha and the Gurkha Durbar, it is only right that we give what we can to this appeal for the earthquake victims. We hope our gift will encourage others to give also.”

NEPAL EARTHQUAKE APPEAL

Nepal’s major cities, including the capital Kathmandu, have been badly damaged and rural areas near the epicentre have been completely cut off by avalanches.
The Disasters Emergency Committee member agencies and their partners are working urgently to provide emergency shelter, food, clean water and blankets.
Once immediate, life-saving needs are met they will work with individuals, families and communities to support them to rebuild their lives.
You can help by making a donation now. www.dec.org.uk/appeals/nepal-earthquake-appeal
