I think the prince of wales at Hammer Vale are doing something for children as it finishes at 9 oclock on Saturday evening. I do not know if there will be a bonfire etc but they are doing fancy dress pumpkins etc give them a ring as I am sure there is no admission fee charged.

Does anyone know of fireworks happening tonight? It is the 5th of November we have to remember after all!

I love the fireworks, but it has always AMAZED me how in such a ‘politically correct’ age, that we are allowed to celebrate the murder (hanging, drawing and quartering) of a bunch of Catholics trying to fight for the right to practice their religion.
Its almost akin to allowing celebrations to take place [by either Protestants or Catholics] whenever the IRA were foiled/successful in their acts of atrocity and terrorism. We would never accept that as a basis of celebration would we – there would be a political and religious uproar!!
Still, I do love them – just wish it didn’t remind me of our terrible history regarding religious intolerance.

And no-one's mentioned the biggest show of all - Petersfield, Saturday evening at Bell Hill, just beside the A3 Winchester junction - £X,000 of pyrotechnics with music too. What could be better?
Dawn, I know what you mean but don't you think it all has an origin much older than 1605? I'm sure the thrill of a bonfire on a damp night as we slide into winter was cause for celebration long before we found the Guy Fawkes excuse.

I believe it's generally accepted that 5/6th November was the original date the Celts celebrated Samhain (now associated with Halloween) and the burning of the 'guy' was derived from fact that they used to burn their prisoners, caged in wicker baskets, suspended over bonfires....none of the Gun Powder plotters were actually burned.
I wonder what would happen nowadays to some one who attempted to blow up Parliament when all the MPs etc were present ???

In the present climate Eneida, they'd probably get a round of applause!!

That's very interesting, Barbara. Will Jordan's boyfriends effigy be dressed in traditional period male garb OR!! ----- in a skirt??
