Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (30th Sep 2004 - 08:33:37)

Now that winter draws on I would quite like to join a book club.

Are there any in Liphook? Or anyone interested in starting up one?

Eneida

Re: Book Clubs
- Alex Cameron (30th Sep 2004 - 12:52:03)

Eneida i'm going to have to put aside the affection i normally feel for you, and ask what the hell is a book club?

Maybe its an oldies thing, but god it sounds dull :D)

Re: Book Clubs
- S (30th Sep 2004 - 14:15:27)

Everyone gets together once a month, chooses a book, reads it and then discuss it's merits at the following months meet.

I'm guessing thats what happens anyway.

Re: Book Clubs
- Alex Cameron (30th Sep 2004 - 23:05:09)

Ahaa. Sexy stuff, then. I thought it was some kind of weird metaphor for swinging, dogging or whatever.

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (1st Oct 2004 - 07:22:56)

Alex, dear, you haven't been your usual, sweet self lately, have you?

What's up? Has that nasty salad attacked you again??

Re: Book Clubs
- S (1st Oct 2004 - 12:07:25)

Nope Alex Stan Collymore has not been seen at any Book Club events in the local area. Nor have I actually so what does that tell you?

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (1st Oct 2004 - 17:16:57)

Quite a lot, actually S....

Re: Book Clubs
- Thomas p (3rd Oct 2004 - 00:19:15)

Alex

Just get yourself about a bit more...

You could do with some fresh air...

Thomas P

Re: Book Clubs
- Alex Cameron (3rd Oct 2004 - 16:11:48)

Thomas i think the problem is that i've been about far too much for my own good ;)

Now Eneida how on earth am i supposed to assume a farcade of reckless criticism when you keep being so nice? That an unfair female tactic - a pre-emptive strike, if you will. :D)

Not wanting to detract from the issue, but as you haven't come out for a clear definition of what you meant by 'book club', we can only assume the worst...

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (4th Oct 2004 - 08:51:18)

Hi Alex - how are you?

This is a new game I've decided we should play. Here are the rules...Everybody on this site has to be as nice as pie to everybody else for a whole week - not a single moan or groan. The first person to break the rules has to pay a forfeit (to be decided) - my money's on Mr. Grimes!

For your information a book club is a group of people who decide on a list of books they're going to read then meet up to discuss it over a glass of wine or two - all very respectable. If you watched Richard and Judy you would know this.

Re: Book Clubs
- Alex Cameron (4th Oct 2004 - 16:45:26)

That's it Eneida - one more hint of general pleasantness out of you and its time for...um....something to be confirmed later when i've thought of it.

Sounds like an interesting game as it happens, and i put myself as favourite to mess it up (3/1) , unless Chris 'Queuer' Robinson angers Mike again.

Richard & Judy?....aaaaaarrrrrggghhh nooooooooooooooo god help us all.....

Re: Book Clubs
- S (5th Oct 2004 - 15:55:40)

Christoper Robbin? Christopher Robinson? Books?

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (5th Oct 2004 - 17:38:48)

Listen you two - the man's name is PAUL Robinson - after being abused on this website every time he opens his mouth people should at least get his name right!

Re: Book Clubs
- Alex Cameron (6th Oct 2004 - 12:20:10)

Wow - Eneida's angry, which means it must be bad. Chris Robinson is the name of the singer in The Black Crowes - a fine band, by the way.

Same point stands though.

Re: Book Clubs
- LippyChick (8th Oct 2004 - 08:31:14)

Eneida!

Back to the thread! A Book club sounds like an excellent plan and I'd like to join one too. Have you had any success at finding one?

Lips x (with not a drop of sarcasm)

Re: Book Clubs
- Paul Robinson (8th Oct 2004 - 10:51:54)

Dear all,

This is THE Paul Robinson and thank you to those who have leaped to my defence.

I am surprised that no one has replied about an existing book club in Liphook as I am sure that there must be at least one.So I would like to issue an invitation to start one. I am familiar with the way these are run in that my whole career to date has been involved with books. Publishing, reviewing, writing and selling etc.

Most book clubs select by common consent a book that they would like to read. This done the group meets and they all discuss what they like or dislike about the book.

However I think for the first one or two meetings, which are usually held once a month, the readers should select a book that they have read that they particularly liked that others may have read or will be new to the rest of the group.

It sounds as if we have three members already, are there any more out there.

Paul Robinson

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (8th Oct 2004 - 11:15:35)

Hi L

I haven't had any sensible replies, apart from yours, but perhaps people were put off by Alex and the 'strange' S!

Perhaps we could start one together and get some more people to join in??

I'm a bit worried by the ending on your posting though!

Re: Book Clubs
- Jenny (8th Oct 2004 - 11:24:15)

Hi Paul,

Sorry to respond on this thread but i was wondering if you could drop me a line on smallwren@hotmail.com.

I am looking for some information on ways to get into book reviewing.. this is something i have been interested in for some time now.

Many thanks

Jenny

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (8th Oct 2004 - 12:22:34)

Hi Paul,

I sent mine before I saw yours, if you know what I mean! Oh dear! should I reword that..moving swiftly on ..thats splendid.

Shall we declare the Liphook Book Club launched? How many people do you think we need to start?

Eneida

Re: Book Clubs
- S (8th Oct 2004 - 14:34:51)

Who's strange?

Re: Book Clubs
- Paul Robinson (8th Oct 2004 - 17:31:59)

I am not sure that there are any hard and fast rules about numbers but my guess would be somewhere between six and twelve members, being enough to fill an average room allowing for the fact that all members may not be available at every meeting.

I am sure there must be other interested readers who are not contributors to Liphook.co.uk.

Paul

Re: Book Clubs

For those interested in joining or starting a 'Book Club' there is an interesting web site

book-clubs-resource.com

Re: Book Clubs
- lippychick (9th Oct 2004 - 05:48:13)

Eneida and Paul

I think we most certainly should!

My email addy is hopiheaven@aol.com. I guess you'll need that info. Anyone fancy asking others not using the board whether they would like to join in?

Re: Book Clubs
- Alex Cameron (11th Oct 2004 - 10:51:47)

Bizarrely, this appeals to me slightly. Two books that i've been told to read recently are:

1) Dark Star Safari, by Paul Theroux
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0140281118/

and

2) The Liar, by Stephen Fry
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0099457059

Re: Book Clubs
- S (11th Oct 2004 - 11:27:46)

I want to read Stan Collymore's autobiography.

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (11th Oct 2004 - 14:45:46)

There you are S!! and you said Stan Collymore would never be seen at a Book Club event...bet he has.

Re: Book Clubs
- marian Camilleri (11th Oct 2004 - 16:13:41)

I think it would be a great idea to start a book club in Liphook. I would be very interested and know of one or two others who might also be. Would it be a good idea to try to get a date and venue for an initial meeting of interested parties to come along and discuss further? Perhaps one evening in a local pub?

Re: Book Clubs
- Jane G (11th Oct 2004 - 17:41:02)

Marian you beat me to it! I'm another interested party and think it would be great to get the ball rolling over a glass of wine...

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (11th Oct 2004 - 17:46:58)

Hi Paul,

We seem to have enough interested people now to make a start.

Since you are the Book Club expert, what do you suggest we do next??

Eneida

Re: Book Clubs
- Paul Robinson (11th Oct 2004 - 20:31:11)

To all potential Book Club Members.

We need to set a date that is convenient to all can I suggest w/c November 1st, preferably a week day and meet at about 7.30pm.

Come along with one or two books (bring them with you) that you have read in the past year that you have enjoyed. I'll bet that there are a few that others have read and enjoyed already but they may be new to other members. The books need not be the latest bestsellers of the week. They can be childhood favourites, fiction or non fiction etc.

Initially I suggest that we discuss these and later on we, as a group, can select a book for the group to read and discuss.

I have a few ideas for widening the scope of the group we can kick this around when we meet.

Please e-mail me on probabc@btinternet.com with your preferred date.

Re: Book Clubs
- Alex Cameron (11th Oct 2004 - 20:59:07)

How about appropriating some of that £2250 community chest fund surplus for a drink or ten? That'll get the evening racing along quite nicely.

Its either that or the millennium hall committee may well receive my request for a charitable donation to the 'AC beneficiary fund'. Great for tax, at least.

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (12th Oct 2004 - 08:11:51)

Hi everybody

Before meeting for the Book Club proper, how about following Marian's excellent suggestion and meeting at a local pub so we can get to know each other informally over a glass of wine or two?

Regards

Eneida

Re: Book Clubs
- Jenny (12th Oct 2004 - 09:08:12)

£2250?

Not sure how many drinks you'll get for that in Liphook but sounds like it is worth a try!

Just out of interest..... the book club does sound of interest but would this be a weekly meeting? If so would you have to attend everyone or could w keep in touch about the books we are all reading via email? I would be interested but i would not be able to attend on a weekly basis because of work.

Jen

Re: Book Clubs
- Jane G (12th Oct 2004 - 15:52:36)

I guess a monthly meet up would be good - give us a chance to read the books anyway!

To get things going if we all email Paul as he suggested earlier in this thread hopefully he can co-ordinate a date between us??

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (13th Oct 2004 - 08:52:20)

Please ignore my posting regarding meeting at a local pub.

Paul has arranged the first meeting for Wed. 3 Nov. at 7.30. If you are interested in attending please e-mail Paul for details.

Regards
Eneida

Re: Book Clubs
- Steve Read (13th Oct 2004 - 22:12:40)

Dear Book Club Fans,
Hope the meeting is not to be held anywhere near the Headley Road, you better set off now.

Wishing you all success with the new club.

Re: Book Clubs
- Alex Cameron (14th Oct 2004 - 22:50:05)

I'm at pains to bring this up, but will Paul be stipulating single-file queuing on entrance to the pub? :D)

I'm seriously thinking about this, looks interesting. But that's the nerd in me. How many people have volunteered so far? The power of the internet....

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (15th Oct 2004 - 08:03:37)

It's not nerdish to like books....it's much more nerdish to pretend you don't!!

Re: Book Clubs
- Paul Robinson (15th Oct 2004 - 08:28:33)

Numbers for the book club are building nicely but still no need for queueing. We now have a couple of prospective male contributors so the choice of books should be a balanced one.

Still need to hear from Marian, Jenny et al.

Happy reading

Paul

Re: Book Clubs
- Jenny (15th Oct 2004 - 09:33:10)

Won't be able to make the first few meetings i am afraid as i will be away for most of November. Would it be possible for me to have someone's e-mail address so i can contact them on my return and find out when the next meeting is?

Thanks

Jenny

Re: Book Clubs
- marian (15th Oct 2004 - 19:46:16)

Paul

I have tried to e mail you twice, they haven't bounced back but obviously something is happening in the ether. However, Jane G mentioned to me this morning that she has the details and so I will tag along with her on the 3rd.

Thanks

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (16th Oct 2004 - 07:19:24)

Hi Jenny,

Sorry you won't be able to join us.

Here is Paul's e-mail address again, for you or anybody else interested in joining us.

Actually what about a few more men coming along...with all these ladies Paul will feel lonely!!

Thanks Eneida - i have sent a mail,

Re: Book Clubs
- Mike Grimes (20th Oct 2004 - 00:01:28)

I've no time for book clubs but in memory of Pete McCarthy, who died recently, you may wish to consider discussing McCarthy's Bar.

Re: Book Clubs
- Alex Cameron (20th Oct 2004 - 11:05:34)

This must be one busy club as i sent an email days ago, but no response. Is my email in a queue? ;)

Re: Book Clubs
- Jenny (20th Oct 2004 - 11:57:06)

'All of our book club advisors are currently busy... your e-mail is important to us so please keep holding until it can be answered... thank you'

(Followed by awful holding music... probably Greensleves)

Re: Book Clubs
- S (20th Oct 2004 - 12:27:01)

Yes alex it's in a queue.

'Messages waiting to be routed into the bin' queue.

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (20th Oct 2004 - 14:20:18)

The book club is definitely a QUEUE FREE zone !! and actually I quite like Greensleeves.

Alex, if you really sent an e-mail and haven't had a reply try eneida@croxley45.fsnet.co.uk. You'll certainly get a reply and it might even be polite!

Eneida

Re: Book Clubs
- Lenny (20th Oct 2004 - 23:06:10)

Mike

If you are not interested in a book club then don't bother posting.

Anyone know when the first kicks off, no word from the organiser yet?

Lenny

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (21st Oct 2004 - 08:10:34)

Hi Lenny,

The first Book Club meeting is on Wed. 3 November at 7.30.

If you are interested in coming along please e-mail me on eneida@croxley45.fsnet.co.uk.

Re: Book Clubs
- Alex Cameron (21st Oct 2004 - 18:01:37)

Eneida is now officially my favourite forum poster as she answered my email whereas Chris didn't...

Speaking of official things, is this the longest thread ever? Over 50 replies soon, and that must be a record?

Re: Book Clubs
- S (22nd Oct 2004 - 11:07:56)

Yes amazing 51 posts and not one of has ever read a book ;-)

Re: Book Clubs
- Paul Robinson (23rd Oct 2004 - 13:20:55)

Thank you for the rush of late entries for the Liphook Book Club, I am now back from a week selling in the Emerald Isle and have, as far as I can tell, replied to all except Lenny who Eneida has replied to.

Interst thus far would appear to put a lie to 'S's speculation that many of the correspondent's don't or can't read.

As for Mike's contribution I should very much like to discuss 'Macarthy's Bar', which I enjoyed enormously, and I should like to ask him what he thought of the follow up 'Road to Macarthy'.
Paul

Re: Book Clubs
- Lenny (24th Oct 2004 - 03:06:21)

I don't think Mike Grimes deserves to have a request in the book club Paul - judging by his posts on this site, i'd be surprised if he's even read a newspaper, let alone a book in the last 10 years

See you at the next meeting

Lenny

Re: Book Clubs
- Alex Cameron (24th Oct 2004 - 23:25:55)

No reply for me though? Can't we have a forum social for other events, not just group reading?

Re: Book Clubs
- Paul Robinson (25th Oct 2004 - 08:52:28)

Lenny,

Can you contact me on probabc@btinternet.com or eneida@croxley45.fsnet.co.uk and we will give you details of where and when and how for the first meeting on 3rd November 2004.

Bring along a couple of books that you have read in the last couple of months to discuss.

Hope to hear from you soon

Paul

Re: Book Clubs
- S (26th Oct 2004 - 09:46:39)

A couple of books read in the past couple of months??

Surely you mean magazines? Noone reads a book in less than a year do they, even the Mr Men ones take me that long.

Re: Book Clubs
- Lenny (27th Oct 2004 - 19:16:47)

S

Come along to the club, you never know you may even get to "Janet and John"status...

Lenny, Lark Rise

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (5th Nov 2004 - 09:04:16)

The first Liphook Book Club meeting took place on Wednesday last and a jolly time was had by all!!

We now have 14 members ranging from teenager to retirees, so no ageism here! How refreshing..

The next meeting will be held on Wed. 8th Dec. at 7.45. New members are still welcome.

Will everyone coming along please contact me on eneida@croxley45.fsnet.co.uk or Paul on probabc@btinternet.com at least a week before the meeting.

Marian Camilleri we don't appear to have your correct e-mail address, could you send it please?

Eneida

Re: Book Clubs
- marian c (6th Nov 2004 - 08:40:53)

Eneida

I tried to e mail you but it kept refusing to send. My address is marian@camilleri.cc

Thanks and I agree the first meeting was really enjoyable and thanks to Paul for providing refreshments.

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (30th Nov 2004 - 10:31:19)

Hi Paul

I've beeing trying to e-mail everybody about next Wed. but my computer seems to be playing up. Can you confirm you received yours? Of course it might be a problem with my brain - Morrisons are at the gates and it's so noisy I can hardly think! I'm thinking of moving to a tent in Radford Park, if I pretend to be a gipsy should be OK. Can I borrow your dog?

Eneida

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (30th Nov 2004 - 13:12:58)

Hi Paul

What fun!! Morrisons have just told me they've somehow managed to drill through my gas main and have ruptured it - so now I'm gas-less. But apparently I'm going to be alright because they've sent for an 'expert'.

Who'd want to live in boring old Devon when Liphook can be so exciting!

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (10th Dec 2004 - 15:12:26)

The second book club meeting took place on Wed. and I can report to any interested parties that we are still alive and well and determined to succeed.

The next meeting will take place on Jan.12th and we have vacancies for new recruits.

Academic brilliance is not required or even particularly desirable - just a love of books and an enjoyment of airing all our opinions in a friendly atmosphere over a glass of wine and a nibble or two.

Anyone intersted can contact me on eneida@croxley45.fsnet.co.uk

Re: Book Clubs
- koohpil1 (14th Dec 2004 - 21:04:39)

you should try reading the Red Tent - a truly wonderful book - that captures the plight of women back in the old Testement.

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (15th Dec 2004 - 09:30:26)

Thank you for your suggestion. We'll certainly have to try the Red Tent! In fact, it's already been recommended by a very good friend of mine from Hindhead. She thought it was rather reminiscent of that classic favourite 'Little Women' only set in biblical times of course.

Is that the impression you got ??

Re: Book Clubs
- ann taylor (11th Mar 2005 - 20:55:31)

Dear Whoever,
I woud love to hear more about the Liphook Book Club - I think the idea is a great one. Please can you give me an update?

Re: Book Clubs
- Kay (16th Mar 2005 - 16:53:11)

I second Ann's suggestion. Is the book club still on the go? Please let us know more.

Thanks

Re: Book Clubs
- Eneida Nelson (16th Mar 2005 - 17:05:50)

Hi Ann

The 'whoever' is me, Eneida! The Liphook Book Club meets approx. once a month, in one of the member's homes to discuss the book we chose to read and to choose the next one and to generally have a good time!

The current book we're reading is The Two Pound Tram by William Newton and the next meeting is next Thursday, 24th March at 7.45. From experience I'm now reluctant to give my e-mail address on a public website but you could contact Paul Robinson on probabc@btinternet.com if you want details of the address. BTW I'm amazed you had the patience to get to the end of this extremely long thread!!

Eneida
