Liphook Lads 1900s
- Gordon (6th Apr 2015 - 01:05:42)

Today I found another interesting picture from Liphook past. The man in the middle (bottom row) is my uncle, and he was killed in the battle of Jutland, and I believe his name was Edward Kimber. However, I am unsure who the other men in the picture are. Does anyone else recognise any of them? I believe the photo was taken around the early 1900s, perhaps near 1914 in Liphook, as Edward was killed in action in 1916, and originally he was from the Sheet/Petersfield area.

I am sure that the Heritage Centre at the Millennium Hall would be interested in this and might be able to identify some of the faces.

Hi Gordon, this picture has just come to our attention. We would love to have a copy for our archives.

Just to add to our posting ref Edward Kimber. He is listed on the Sheet Roll of Honour, as able seaman with hms Queen Mary, died 31st May 1916 aged 23. He was son of Emily and George Kimber of 14 Sheet Street, Sheet. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

Gordon,

I don't know about the photo, but if you are interested in your uncle's family tree and haven't already researched it, I have a few details of the Kimber family tree.

Dear Gordon, Heather et al,
I don't know if you will read this but I chanced upon the photo of Edward Kimber and was wondering if it is possible to communicate by email with you.
My mother's family Hayden and Hardy were half-Kimbers due to a second marriage. Olive Hardy married Tom Hill and he went down in Jutland, too, on HMS Indefatigable on the same day as HMS Queen Mary.
They must have known each other in Petersfield.
I am currently writing a book on the period.
My email is gregory.j.sayer@gmail.com
Best wishes
