Bogus callers
- Dave Lambert (12th Mar 2015 - 19:31:11)
I have just had two men at my door collecting on behalf of the British Legion so they say. I think they are dodgy so I have called the old bill and told them.
So if you get a knock on your door be careful and don't give them any money.

Best to never give money to charity this way. If you want to donate then donate directly to the charity. Likely it's a con just like the endless charity bags for clothes that keep getting stuffed through the letter box. But still a very useful pen and bin bag.

We had the same last night, a young girl knocked on the door. Politely said no thank you, but she was very chatty. Thought it strange someone representing an organisation out late about 7.00 ish.

I also had a call from a man from the British legion this evening. I don't think there was anything dodgy about it, he seemed official (although, as i was not interested i didn't ask for authentication)...
Despite my making clear that i want interested and don't sign up to anything door to door, he was still very friendly and polite, we had a short chat and he went on his way. I usually hate cold callers at the door but have to say he was the friendliest ive ever encountered and can't criticise him, someone is going to take the job!
Better than the huffy young blokes who utter a swear word under their breath and storm off down the drive! (and no,i never said anything rude to incite that response!!)

I have had a call back from Hampshire police and they have told me that they have looked into it and they say that there papers are all in order. I am still not at all happy with the situation. Tomorrow I will try to contact the British Legion and then hopefully get it sorted once and for all.
The same two men knocked on a neighbours door and when she asked for ID they very quickly left.
If they were genuine they would have shown her there ID. I think they are very iffy so if you get a knock on your door please make sure that you get ID before you part with your money. Plus why would you be knocking on peoples doors after eight at night it is dark and that makes it difficult to see them. If they are genuine why would they not call in the daylight and then everybody can see who they are.

Agree with Dave on this.
They knocked on our door at 7.30pm on Monday night (I think) right in the middle of us putting our daughter to bed - only for us to be told sarcastically "that's a good excuse - haven't heard that one...."
I don't like charities turning up on the door like this and given their tone and sarcasm I contacted British Legion - but haven't had any response.
Likewise - if I want to give to charity I'll do it in my own time.

I have today spoken to Colonel Jack from Liphook he is well informed regarding the British Legion. He is the gentleman in charge of the Poppy collection in Liphook every year.
He told me that the Legion was raising funds but thought it most unlikely they would knock on doors after dark. He has told me that you should not donate unless you have seen their ID.
Colonel Jack thinks it might be a scam and is contacting the British Legion to sort this out

We too had a caller regarding the British Legion Fundraising Lottery. I did query why calling in the evening and was informed that during the day time there are not many people at home.A polite young person and after explaining we already donate to the British Legion he thank us for listening and left. Information can be received from fundenquiries @britishlegion.org.uk or lottery@britishlegion.org.uk hope this helps.

Most charities now employ young people or unemployed people working on commission only to do their fundraising. They are employed by another company, they may be fundraising for the British legion, they are not employed by them directly, so I imagine that they may not even know much about the British Legion when questioned. It is the same on the telephone, commission based people hit the phones for charities in the same way. If you are suspicious, then call the police.

There must have been several people fundraising for them, perhaps the same guy visited my house who Anne had. I'm beyond the station end of town.
Clearly some were more friendly than others! But I can only say the man who knocked on my door was alone, had a red British legion tabard on, and was totally friendly and polite even when I said no thanks.
I don't remember what time it was, but was early evening - it was still light outside. Sounds like there were some others who were causing concern though. I hope they don't ask get tarred with the same brush.
