PC/Computer repairs
- Tony (9th Mar 2015 - 15:40:46)

I have just looked through the thread about issues with Computer repairs.

I have worked in the IT industry for over 30 years and i get asked a lot is how do i get my PC to run faster. my answer is what can you afford and most things can be done by the end user.

1 upgrade the hard drive to an ssd (solid state drive) this is basically a lump of memory that looks like a hard drive. a 250Gb drive is around £75.

2 add memory as much as the system will take this will reduce the system using the hard drive as temp memory space.

3 Use an application call CCleaner helps to keep the registry in order and get rid of duplicate entries and old registry entries that are no longer used.

4 SPYbot get rid of spyware. You will be surprised on how much you have on your system.

Both 3 and 4 are free to use and readily available of the Internet.

You could also try the old favorite and run the defrag program but if you are running Win 7 this may not be of much help as it does its housekeeping quite well.

Good stuff but don't defrag an SSD !

Good luck , Fred..

Many people's PC's have programs that are set to automatically run at startup.

- Start
- type msconfig in the search box and hit enter
- select startup tab
- uncheck any programs that you do not need running every time you boot the PC

These programs can still be started when you want but they won't be loaded at startup. Too many startup programs can eat up memory and lead to execessive boot times ..

To ask the normal layman to use MSconfig is very dangerous as their is a lot of other tabs that they could click on and stop the PC from completely working.

If you are just a person who fancies making money out of innocent users then who am i to stop you. But once someone changes any setting like in the Boot tab without specialist tools/Software you are looking at a rebuild.

This like the registry tools are a dangerous place to be if you do not know what you are doing. Its definitely not a place to play or experiment.
