Deers Hut
- Lee (26th Sep 2004 - 21:36:02)
Before moving away from Liphook, i was a resident for a good 20 years and have always thought of the Deer's Hut as one of the better pubs in the village.
It used to be a standard joke that you had to be over 48 to be served in there, but upon returning to visit family and friends last weekend found myself up against an official rule - no children under 14.
I had walked quite some distance with my wife and 6 month old son to enjoy a quiet pint and meal and (as it had started to rain) didn't fancy sitting outside. I realise an earlier thread was posted regarding this same subject, but i would just like to point out that the pub has gone downhill in my book. I understand that it is under new management since i last called by, and you can tell - the outside used to look fantastic, nice flowers and hanging baskets - and the menu has seen better days
This is certainly not a post to cause trouble or rubbish the pub, maybe a wake up call that a few alterations can make the place better. I mean talk about a missed opportunity!, i hear that the Black Fox does great food, same for the Links (if a touch on the pricey side)
You have a great opportunity to offer something else to the village other than (forgive me for sounding harsh here) a substandard run-of the mill service

To quote Steve from probably 6 months ago ...
"The Deers Hut at the moment does not have a CHILDRENS LICENSE,you have to have one of these to legally allow children onto the premises. Its not that we don't want to allow children in
we'd be delighted too.We are currently looking into obtaining the license and all being well with the application,we will hopefully in the near future be able to welcome families in"
I'm surprised you need a license for children - we just pitched up at the hospital and they appeared. No training, no tests.
I still find it so bizarre that, with so many families now in Liphook & the surrounds, very few landlords see a good family pub as an opportunity (particularly when somewhere like the deers hut is hardly a drop in local). Come on Steve - you know it makes good business sense - where has the wooden climbing frame gone?

I'll throw an idea out there for free - a chinese restaurant. Yes, i know we already have 2 takeaways, but if the Nepalese place can make a buck, why not?

Childrens licences are a legal requirement... they ensure that the pub is a "safe"environment for kids to be in with ergards to toilets, sharp corners, would children be in the vicinity of the bar etc.... they are a complete bitch to comform to....cost a fortune in order to bring pubs in line with tham... thats why most pubs dont allow children because any profits would be wiped out trying.....
anyway...the question should be asked...why were u wanting to take a 6 month old baby into the pub... hardly an appropriote* environment is it.

Alex.
You've entered a debate on the Old Deers Hut and, astonishingly, suggested it become a Chinese Restaurant.
Who, exactly, on this website, let alone this thread are you appealing to?
I would like a Michelin starred restaurant, a quality butcher, greengrocer, baker and fishmonger in Liphook but would not ask for these on a thread about children in pubs ... oh I just have.

Oops - i could have been slightly clearer there. I don't realy have an opinion on the Deers' Hut as i've never frequented it (too far out to bother going to, BF is an exception).
What i meant was that Liphook needs a chinese restaurant. Wherever that might be, who knows. However, i did notice that we'll be getting a trendy wine bar on trhe MIdhurst Rd soon....

A fishmonger would be fantastic. I have no idea where there is one in our local area. I wish I did.

Surfer dude - my 6 month old son wasn't going in for a pint! we were out on a walk and i remembered the Deers hut (When Pip was the Landlord) and thought it'd be a good idea to pop in for a bite to eat, thinking the place would be the same as it was - and it wasn't. if anything is appropriate for my little boy or not, i'll be the judge, not you. No Offence by the way...
I have to agree with Mike Grimes, Liphook needs all the things he mentioned, real food - good quality
If the pub is situated where people will drive to it (with access to the new A3 at Griggs Green) then offering something different and decent can only be a great thing. If the first big pub people see upon driving into the village off the old A3 is the Anchor (or Hungry Horse as the dreadfull green sign screams) then Liphook is in deep trouble, pub-wise!
Again, Deers Hut - come on, let's have some imagination - Liphook deserves better
Oh, and you can start by getting a barrell of Ballards - great (local-ish) beer

S.
The need for a Bondesque nickname for such an uncontentious issue escapes me but I will say that I did pick up a beautiful bit of sea bass from Kaighin & Daughter in Grayshott at the weekend. They are two of the things that I mentioned (Fishmonger and Butcher) and one (Delicatessen) that I didn't. Not in Liphook but only 10 mins drive away.
Recently we had two bakers in Liphook (or rather a bakers and a bread shop) now we just have the bread shop. Anyone any idea what happened?

Sorry, I'm pretty sure the house is tied.

S is short for Steve, no reason just quicker to type it. I'm not hiding myself.
I didn't think the butchers in Grayshot was a fishmongers but maybe it is. I will go and check it out. Sea Bass would be very nice.

I appriciate that you werent taking your kid out for a pint.... but the deers hut is a PUB... not a restaurant. You will find majority of pubs all over the country dont allow children because they want it to remain an adult atmosphere (aside from the Childrens Certificate issue)... somewhere for Parents to go to escape the kids...and the deers hut is a classic example of this...a small semi rural pub for people to enjoy a quiet pint in.

Mike - Unashamedly a commercial plug for General Wine Company in Station Road:
We have fresh polypins of Ballards Best delivered every Friday lunchtime, direct from the brewery. We normally sell out by late Friday/early Saturday. It's £2.69 per litre and we supply the containers.
If anyone wants to support a genuine local wine merchant, with knowledgeable and polite staff, come down and pay us a visit.
Our Shippers Club offers members real savings. (up to 15% this Saturday).
This Saturday, we hold our 6th Wine Fair ,at the Millennium Centre opposite Sainsbury's. Kicks off at 11am. There will be more than 200 wines to taste + tutorials + spirit and sparkling wine tastings. Entry is FREE - just pop into the shop and pick up an invitation.
Oh yes, and I've taken responsibility for our Italian section of about 100 wines. I'm working my way through tasting everything we stock. Tough job but someone has to do it!
Highlights so far: MASI Valpolicella 2002; Principato Pinot Grigio.
cheers

Alex - or should I say Mr Ireland? Or were you using a different alias yesterday?
We had a great day at the Wine Fair. Best ever attendance. The surprise hit of the day was the Plantation Rum. Loads of people tried it for the first time and were amazed what a smooth drink it is. We've got about 6 varieties in the shop.
Don't know about freaking me out, but I used to love Fat Freddy and the Furry Freak Brothers. Best comic strip ever produced.
rgds to all
