The Black Fox Inn and other places!
- Freddie Dawkins (25th Sep 2004 - 10:32:55)
I kept my head low(ish) on the previous thread about the BFI vs other restos, but I thought I;ld get the debate started again:
I went down on Thursday evening. I phoned Allan first and he made a table available to us for 7.30pm - that's 30 minutes after I called. New barmen, I think, are excellent. Very enthusiastic and professional. We had a quick drink in the bar, ordered our food and were just finishing our drinks when we were invited to our table.
Great meal. Whole plaice for me, steak for dining partner. Great veggies, execellent Rioja and no great mark up - I should know, I work part-time for General Wine and know the trade prices. Allan's mark up is VERY reasonable comapred to many.
Now, a point worth noting: although the resto area was only hald full, Allan also had a businessmen's dinner going on in the function room - so he was probably catering for more than 60 people during the evening. Yet he fitted us in with 30 minutes notice BECAUSE we booked and he had some prior notice.
So, if you want a good meal, reasonably priced, and friendlt staff - phoen ahead, make a reservation and enjoy the BFI.
And Mike G - sorry mate, did catch a glimpse of you while I was paying the bill - but I was too crisp-crackered to start sinking a few!!!
cheers!

Alright Freddie! (I take it Allan is providing you with a few free pinmts for the shameless plug?)
i think this new thread proves a point, in that some people have had good service and enjoyed themselves at the black fox and others have had a bad experience and not. The tone of Freddie's post insinuates that Paul Robinson is in the minority because he dared to express his dis-satisfaction with the treatment he got , and that he was in some way to blame because did not book a table in advance? I'm sorry but i don't accept that, Paul has got a rough ride because he spoke his mind, so what?
I haven't eaten in the black fox, but will so i can make qa fair comment like evryone else. I i don't drink in their as often as you and Mike i think my comment will be less biased as yours and let the other members of the village what the food/service is like without tipping my hat to the landlord.

I've only eaten there once. It was after the LiBDA Cycle day (and only went there because it was plugged by the LiBDA organisers as I'd not really heard about it before).
I've got to say it was a fantastic afternoon. They laid on a "buffet" style roast. Had my two kids with me who had good portions for a kids price. Jazz band was even fantasticier !
Just need to find a cycle path back to Liphook that is not on the old A3 - so the kids can cycle - it may exist - any input anyone ?
This is not a shameless plug ... Don't know the landlord but I'm happy to receive any retrospective bribes !

I've eaten at the Black Fox once, and i was impressed with the food, but not the wait for it (i booked).
I'd love to spend more time down there to get to know it better, only trouble is it means driving due to how remote it is compared to its competition. We should get Forest Mere to find a monorail or something ;)

To be fair to Allan Keith - and me - can I just say that I go to the BFI, roughyly once every two months or so. I eat there about 6 - 7 times a year and I've been going there for about 11 years now. I've never had anything but a great meal.
We all have different standards and I've eaten at places like the Gavroche, Nico's etc - so I do have some idea about decent food and value for money - and service.
Just by way of comparison, the Lickfold Inn has new landlords. Excellent pub and resto. Food is slightly trender than BFI - but at least 40% more in price. Portions about the same. Mark up on wine is, shall we say, generous to the landlord.
Jolly Drovers at Hillbrow - busy pub, excellent Hoegaarden on draught, and fast service. But food is a few notches below BFI and prices much the same. Try and get a table on a Friday or Saturday night without booking - and good luck!
Rising Sun down at Milland - not been there for years but here good things.
Sun Inn at Rake. Heard that former Tiller Girl landlady has departed and younger couple have taken over. Anyone been there yet?
And Allan at the BFI is not paying me a penny or giving me any free drinks. He is a Scot after all!!! (sorry, Allan but you know it's true )
