Malthouse Meadows name
- Sue Hodgkinson (4th Feb 2015  20:48:32)

Many years ago, in 1953, I lived in a house at Malthouse Meadows. I remember some of the people who lived there, Sandra Dent was one of them. Can anyone tell me how Malthouse Meadows got its name?

Presumably because the farm was also making a lot of beer! were there hop gardens?

[editor]From Hampshire Treasures: House and Barns C.17 - Malthouse Farm, Haslemere Road, Liphook. Timber-framed and brick house with steep tile roof. Early staircase. Mullioned window discovered in kitchen. At one time belonged to Winchester College and tenants paid rent in grain. Wood and stone barns. Main barn carries College Arms.[/editor]

Mel and Ellie - Thank you for your responses. Both have been very helpful.

When Haslemere road was widened in the fifties (when the estate was being built) the barn had the end wall set further back. The stone tablet with the arms of William of Wykham was preserved and set into the new wall.

My mother told me that she used to live in the farm house when she was a little girl. My grandfather was head carted for the Moss family who owned lakehouse farm and Malthouse farm.around about the first world war time and she never ever mentioned anything about hops or beer making.

Thank you to all who have added information about Malthouse Farm. Don Petter - any relation to my old school teacher Mrs. Petter who lived in one of the beautiful houses on the left hand side of Haslemere Road as you went down towards Malthouse?

My grandparents bought what I think was the old farm house when it was in a massive state of disrepair and renovated it many years ago. They sadly sold it on a good few years ago now and moved to milland.
My granddad has plenty of before and after photos if anyone is interested

Sue,

Yes, I am Mrs Petter's little boy! Though note we very much lived in Queen Street *not* Haslemere Road, until the Post Office forced a change which meant that Queen Street gradually became forgotten. At the same time the named cottages were given numbers, so Wisteria Cottage, Well Cottage, The Cottage (ours) and Rose Cottage became numbers 3, 5, 7 and 9.

Dave Lambert - thank you for the response to my notice about the name of Malthouse Meadows. I only lived there for about 2 years before moving to Gunns Farm, Liphook BUT the name John Randall definitely rings a bell. Did he have a girlfriend called Eileen Dalloway? We were young Mods who went to Liphook Youth Club, held in what was the Village Hall in Headley Road on a Tuesday and a Thursday. This would have been about 1963/64 I think. What happened to John and Eileen? Sorry but I don't remember your sister.

Re: Malthouse Meadows name

Yes my wife tells me John did have a girlfriend called Eileen. John is married with two daughters and now lives in Headley.
My wife (Nee Sheila Randall) have lived in Gunns Farm since 1966.
Come round and have a chat.
Tel. No. 01428//724534.

Dave Lambert - I would love to come round and have a chat - I see you live at 100 Gunns Farm, well I lived at 38 Admers Crescent until August 1966.

My family (Dad worked at The Depot) moved to Oxfordshire and Dad continued his work for the MOD in Bicester, Oxfordshire.

So you see coming round for a chat would mean a road trip for me, particularly as I now live in Nottinghamshire. I have such wonderful memories of my time in Liphook having moved there in Feb 1956 after being born and living at Superior Camp, Grayshott.

John Randall will not remember me I am sure, but mention anyway that I said hello, my friend Diane Hector and I were young Mods in Liphook and had the most wonderful times at the ABC Dances on a Saturday night. I have also posted notices on this site under the heading Tin Church, just in case you are interested. If you know of any photos that exist of the building, I would love to hear from you.

Hi my name is Derek Smyth and I lived at no 58 Malthouse Meadows for a long time, John Randall and David Chiverton were my best friends while growing up, I remember John and Eileen Dallaway being together during their schooldays but both went their separate ways after school, we went around together as my own school sweetheart was one Linda McGee who was friends with Eileen.
My last surviving parent was my mother who sadly died in 1995 still living in that same house since 1951 when the estate was built.
Malthouse Farm was at the top of the road with a hay barn which is now accommodation and fronts Haslemere Road,
it also had a large orchard where all us local boys would enjoy a bit of scrumping.

Derek Smyth - Thank you for your posting about Malthouse Meadows. I am sure the surname Chiverton rings a distant bell for me but I can't place the face. Do you remember me Derek? Are you the same age? I was born 1948, went to Mill Chase from Sept 1959 and left in July 1963 having decided the 60s was too exciting to miss, and wanted to buy the fashions and get the jobs and listen to the music of the time. I just loved it all. Have you read all the postings on this particular Subject? I am also posting under the Subject: Tin Church. Do you have any recollections of the building or perhaps photos?

Hi Sue,
Yes I remember you, we lived down by the second circle,
Sandra Dent also lived around this circle along with David Chiverton, Susan Young, Barrie Madgwick, Jeremy Coonan etc, I was born in 1947 went to Liphook School, then Bramshot Boys School, and on to Mill Chase in 1958 to 1962.
We all used to go to the youth club and the ABC dances at various village halls from Petersfield to Guildford and anywhere in between.

Derek, fantastic that you remember me. Yes I remember the Youth Club in Liphook Village Hall and the great ABC Dances. They were good times, weren't they? I have to admit I can't place you but obviously we were part of the same group of teenagers. Do you remember my best friend Diane Hector? Di and I used to hitch hike down to Portsmouth on a Saturday to our favourite shop, C & A, we would buy a new outfit, hitch back and wear the outfit at the ABC Dance. Di now lives in Australia and has studied for her Phd. I always knew she was cleverer than me.
