Aggressive door to door salesmen - Sumi Olson (3rd Sep 2009 - 21:20:42)
On another note, I read in the local paper about offficals recommend householders call trading standards about the agressive techniques of some door to door sales men. Two young representing an energy company came round to our house very recently claiming they were checking all houses to ensure the latest price cuts were being passed on to comsumers and wanted me to give them information about how much I was paying and by what method.
They were also pushing me to produce an electricity bill to show them. they claimed that it was "their job" to ensure that I was getting appropriate savings and were very pushy about my getting them my latest bill. I was not willing to do so and felt very uncomfortable by the encounter. This has been happening around Liphook - they are not supposed to use this approach hence the recommendation to contact Trading Standards. Please be warned!

We were similarly targetted on our doorstep and when I asked for information to consider in more detail and to discuss with my husband later the seller became rather 'shirty' and said that wasn't possible. I could sign there and then and then take advantage of a 'cooling off period' if I changed my mind ... Eh, no thanks very much!
I rang the Trading Standards number as listed in the Liphook Herald (I only saw the article the day after I was called upon) and was told that they are monitoring 'patterns of such selling behaviour'.
Could perhaps suggest people try comparison websites to see if they are on best tariffs before applying to switch energy providers. The 'choice' can be bewildering!
