The Moon
- Liz (2nd Feb 2015 - 22:35:21)

Quickly look south at the moon and it's surrounded by a circle. It may go quickly, so Editor, quickly.

Hi

If you did happen to see this last night it's called the winter halo also know as the 22 degree halo. a ring forms around the moon when light refracts through hexagonal ice crystals at high altitude.

Also, if you were really keen you may have also seen Jupiter, if you took a photo of the "winter halo" Jupiter may appear to the left, inside the halo.

It was pretty cool, it can appear quite often so look up when putting out the bins you never know what your missing.

Thank goodness for the new night-sky friendly 'green' lights. They allowed me to see the best meteor yet, just at my doorstep.
However, be ware that some of those new lights may come in a 'realistic' daylight shine which was proven to confuse and harm some wildlife. There are cheap simple alternative lights available to prevent that. I've no idea which light is shining out of our new lights here.

Here are some images of the Moon, Jupiter & Comet Lovejoy that I have taken through my telescopes with an imaging CCD camera attached .

Nikki - Wow! Thanks for sharing.

Nat - thanks for the info.

Love walking the dog at night now when the sky is clear (the wind and rain aren't so pleasant!) can see so much more with the new streetlights and keep promising myself I will learn what is what.

Hi Jay,
Thankyou for the nice comments :)

The new street lighting has actually made it worse for observing the night Sky but great for doggy walking !

If you have a smartphone & are interested in learning your way around the night sky, there's a really useful app called Sky Safari.

Also do keep an eye out for the international space station, it's lovely to see ! There are various apps available that give you the times it passes over :)

I have built up a menagerie of astronomy equipment including an observatory in the back garden so if anyone would like to come and view the moon/jupiter or deep sky objects you are more than welcome. (weather dependant of course!), I'm sure the Ed would pass on my email address

Nikki

I would love to see the moon etc from your garden.

Nikki

So glad to hear that you don't think the new lighting has improved the view of the night sky. It seems to be 'accepted wisdom' - perhaps because that is what we have been told - but I couldn't see any improvement. The colour is better but it's very bright!

Jo I have replied to your email :)

Liz, yes these new street lights haven't done us amateur astronomers any favours at all. My garden used to be fantastically dark but now the light pollution has ruined what was. (Especially when you spend £££ on a hobby which relies on dark skies).

You get loads of astronomical data on here

www.heavens-above.com

Register for free, type in your locaiton and get up to date info about the night skies and when satellites are passing over

I would love the opportunity to look at the sky at night!
Ed could I possibly have contact details please?
Thank you

I have passed your email to Nikki
