Traffic in Newtown Road
- Jane (31st Jan 2015 - 21:39:55)

I am becoming particularly fed up with the amount of traffic which is now using Newtown Road as a way of avoiding the queues in Station Road. I know this is mainly due to the closure of the Portsmouth Road, however, Newtown Road is access only / no through road. We have enough issues with pot holes and parking without this problem.
Sadly, many of the vehicles are women dropping off their children at Churchers and the schools in Highfield Lane - judging from the uniforms, vehicles turning right and having driven behind them on my way to Haslemere!

Who would be the best people to communicate this problem too? Yes, I could contact the schools directly and rant but this may not be the best approach!

unfortunately I think you would have problems identifying cars which weren't on the road for legitimate reasons, people could be going to Blackwell press or similar (or say they were!!)

I think you may just have to grit your teeth and hope that the Portsmouth rd is opened soon. You would think they could have just one side open with traffic control . It is a real danger for pedestrians too as many are hopping over the bank and bypassing the barriers to avoid the added distance.

Liphook is a great place to live with lovely people and a good community spirit but has got more frustrating over the years with the amount of traffic and new housing. The powers that be need to take a good hard look at our infrastructure I.e. Road system, parking facilities, sewerage, schools, doctors etc before granting any more planning for housing. Everything and everywhere is gridlocked already and current local residents are suffering the consequences. There doesn't seem to be one overall body that looks at the whole picture for our long term future.

I know of a nearby village which suffered the same sort of issues with a no through road. They tackled it by having two small teams at each end taking down number plates\times and comparing. They then sent this list to the police and the police then sent the drivers letters. They did this as part of an approved police scheme.

This proved so successful that they now do this twice a year. Most people were simply unaware that they were doing anything wrong. I would suggest talking to the same group behind the volunteer speed checks.

It is not a simple as that, unfortunately. The govenment have decreed how many houses the district has to take, if that number of houses are not seen to be under construction by a certain date, they will financially penalise the local authorities. There is talk that the Government grant to help run the services will not be forthcoming in future years. It is the local authority who fund the social care, and costs are ever increasing. AN influx of new council tax payers in the area are needed to fund the local authority coffers, and that comes from filling new houses with council tax payers.

Newtown Road is 'access only' so it depends on your definition of access.

It could be argued that the mums had accessed the road to use as a safe dropping off point.

It's not a private road, maintained for by the residents, it's paid for by those mums too, unless I'm mistaken.

Newtown Road is a public highway, it is not access only or a no through road.

Sorry lgm but Newtown Road IS an access only no through road.
There are signs at either end clearly indicating this.

It is clearly signposted both ends!

It is too narrow with residents parked cars for the heavy rush hour traffic.

No children have been "dropped off" or people stopping to shop at the printers!

However, it has been much better today. My moan coinciding with the reopening of Portsmouth Road. So, let's see how it goes. I can then go back to huffing over lack of parking...
