Longmoor Ranges
- Mrs C (17th Jan 2015 - 09:53:59)

Does anyone know if you are allowed to cycle round the ranges?

My dad was a range warden there for many years and I think that you can go there so long as the red flag isn't up. If the red flag's up it means there's shooting on the ranges

Yes you can, as long as the red flags are not flying.

Yes you can - my family & I cycle round quite often & there are always lots of other cyclists, runners & walkers about. If the red flags are flying you can\'t go in the middle section but you can still go round the outside track usually. Great exercise & fun for the family!

You can run & cycle around the outer perimeter even if the red flags are up, you just can't go inside when the red flags are up. I go there to run 3 times a week and have done for years.

Could someone explain the easiest way to get on the the ranges from Liphook with a bike?

One way that I know (perhaps not the easiest) is via the public footpath to Conford. If you cycle down the Headley road and just as that becomes Hill House Hill, on your left you will see the entrance to a bridleway that leads to Conford. Cycle down there and when you each the part of the bridleway that allows your to take a left towards Conford Park House, go that way and follow the footpath. Eventually you will come to a gate that leads onto the gravel path perimeter of the ranges.

You can also get there via the footpath on one side of the Longmoor road. Go past the Deer's Hut towards the A3 and cross over, The footpath has a screening gate beyond the pavement.

Thanks - great help.

I remember the Range Warden many years ago - it was Paddy Sheridan. He lived in a house on the ranges, up the Greatham end. I expect he has passed on now.

I've never been there, sounds like an interesting place. Is it mountain bike terrain or suitable for hybrids?

There was a fair bit of local press coverage on this last Summer.

The MOD were clamping down on a poorly worded bylaw written in 1976 that stated cycling on MOD land was prohibited. Landmarc were pulling cyclists up and warning them off.

The bylaw states that cycling isn't permitted on MOD land unless the track 'has been constructed for general vehicular use'. It could be strongly argued that the range perimeter track, the track to Liss and various around Weavers Downs are indeed for vehicular use.

The MOD and Landmarc know they are on a hiding to nothing with the current wording of the bylaw.

As long as you are courteous, sensible and don't put other people/yourself in danger I can't see what the harm is. Its a lovely place to cycle with the family in a safe environment as long as you follow basic safety principles.
