Lands End to John O Groats
- Neil (11th Aug 2009 - 11:25:23)
Lands End to John O'Groats Cycle ride in aid of Cancer Research UK
Click justgiving.co.uk/endtoend2010 to donate now.
I have decided to ride from Lands End to John O'Groats in aid of Cancer Research, to many of my close family and friends have been affected by Cancer and I want to try and raise some money to help.
Some of you will know my late father Barry Pope, he was a big part of the local community and unfortunately passed away close to 9 years ago due to Cancer.
Now with another close family member diagnosed I have decided I want to try and do something to help raise some money, I am looking to raise £1000 towards Cancer Research UK.
I would be grateful for any support you can offer, please visit my website where you can find more information.

Thanks

Hi all
We have contacted their site direct, and asked about collection tins. Neil has some - so another way is to have one at your workplace, or in particular on a retail counter.
Good luck boys

In the early 1960's while stationed with the Royal Air Force at R.A.F. Watton in Norfolk, a team of young airmen were sponsored to run a 24/7 relay from Lands End to John O Groates, each taking turns in running a ten miles stretch then resting, sleeping and eating on a bus that followed. My only concern is, be very careful of traffic, especially on narrow roads, as the runners came close to being run over several times (even intentionally). I don't remember the time it took the team to run the distance (was it 600 miles)? yet I do know it was a sucess.
Good luck Neil and Ian, I look forward with interested in your upcoming accomplishments.

A valient effort and one which will mean a lot to me as someone who is also affected by cancer. Believe me, if I was still mobile enough I would be there with you as much as I could.
I will sponsor you over the next week and I really do hope that you receive a lot of support.
Best wishes and kindest regards

How extremely upsetting for both of your families ( The Popes and the Hopes) to have had such and unbelievable hash up of an article written in the local paper!!
It is absolutely inexcusable for a 'journalist' to mix up two deceased people and it has caused Eve (recent widow of Barry Hope) a great deal of upset - as I am sure it has you!
I hope you will write a very strong complaint. Honestly - truly unbelievable.....

Re: Lands End to John O Groats
- Neil (28th Apr 2010 - 11:23:04)
Dawn, I would think more upsetting for Barry Hope's family being so recent my father passed away over 9 years ago and although its never easy when things like this happen time does help.
If you see Eve please pass on my sympathy.
I have emailed the Herald with their mistake and asked they do a reprint so lets see.
Thanks
Neil
Update ...
FYI I have received an email from the Herald and it was a change done by someone not knowing the full story, there should be an apology in this weeks paper. Neil

From their blog yesterday...
"Things started off as normal, hill upon hill but yet again the weather has been great a little windy and yes a head wind but no rain so its good. We had a few stops but I think all in all we had a good morning, I have to say my legs found it very hard to get going.
We did come across a bad car crash today there was a head on but it looks like no one was really hurt. We went through Bristol today which was good to start with and made better being given £10 from a very nice RAC person who pulled up along side of us. Bristol also had some very nice things to look at but the climb out almost broke me.
After we left Bristol we came across some better roads and we got some good speed which pleased us all, Ian suffered a little with his knees today but being the trooper kept on going. We turned off to go to a cafe for lunch but as we turned the corner there was a very long drive and a big hill so we decided to get back on the road and stop at the next pub.
After a nice pub lunch we cracked on and headed to to the finish where Diane again kindly came out to meet us.
Tonight we are staying at Cheltenham Race course which is not the best campsite but it is ok, the best part of today for me was yet to come. Around 7pm Ian said to me that girl looks like Emily and to my surprise and delight Anthea turned up not just with the kids but also Pepper Doggy :-) really made my day and Anthea looked after me which was nice.
Well thats it for today"

Sunday, 9 May 2010
Total Miles: 589
"Woke up today and I for one was feeling the extra push yesterday I must say I am pleased we only met Colin and Tom for a few hours as they go at some pace. We left Gretna this morning and headed towards Dumfries the roads today where fantastic and we averaged about 18 mph which is the best on the trip...."

Thursday 13th May
"What a day we left the campsite and travelled to our drop off point and we where blessed with the first southerly wind the first in 13 days :-). We flew along for the first 30 miles and averaged in the late 18 MPH which is the best yet. We where so quick we ended up getting through Inverness quicker than the support crew which was good fun."

Re: Lands End to John O Groats
- Neil (16th May 2010 - 21:40:30)
Just to let you all know we have now completed the ride, as you will have seen from the posts from Alan (thanks Alan) some days have been easier than others. If I am honest I was not 100% sure I would make it some days but the thought of giving up is just not me.
The ride was amazing I have seen some very beautiful parts of England and Scotland and I really think by bike is the best way.
We have totally smashed our goal of £1000, early signs looks like we should be closer if not higher than £4000.
Thanks you to everyone that has supported us but to those that still want to you can still donate via the website www.endtoend2010.co.uk, I will be sending the money off towards the end of May.
Thanks Everyone
Neil
