Japanese Knotweed
- Sarah S (23rd Jul 2009 - 20:00:52)
I remember a thread on this site a while back regarding the Knotweed problem in Passfield.
Those concerned might be interested in this item from the BBC regarding 'views being sought' on the possible introduction of an insect to combat the problem.

Hiya,
Thanks for that. It's still there and spreading. The National Trust have said they will sort it but it take lots of money to do it properly and they must do it at the right time (apparently in June when the plant is dormant). If you do it at any other time the plant just throws out more runners. I may be wrong but I didn't see any NT activity this June!
So maybe this bug is the answer. Only time will tell I think.

The big question is what will these bugs eat when the knotweed is gone?

Hi all,
Just to say that the NT contractors came to treat the JK in Lynchborough road this morning, spraying some and injecting some. I spoke to them after they had done it (they were only there for about 1 hour, so not sure how much they did) they said that it would need further treatment for the next 2 years and that we were unlikely to see any signs of the treatment until next year. Will post any further info I hear.

Yes, I spoke to them as well. They were also doing the verge up by Conford and were moaning about the contractors that keep on mowing it!!
They said we will know by next year if it has been sucessful or not. and as Dave said, it will be a long term project to control it.
