Whiteleys
- Simon Freeman (2nd Jan 2015 - 16:33:53)

I notice Whiteleys (formerly the Robin Hood) between Liphook and Lindford has closed. Again.

Does anyone know how long it has been closed for and if it has been sold/what the plans are for it?

Does anyone who owns the building?

Thanks.

The owner posted a message last summer to say that it will be redeveloped. See 'Whiteleys of Standford'

Shows that people don't notice shut on or about the1st of September ,developers has told the cottages next door 6 houses minimum similar to the passfield oak site. Another pub goes who fault is that ??????

Mmm yes - it's like people saying they want a local greengrocer etc - then don't use it when given one!

Do you remember when the Passfield Stores set up a range of fresh organic vegetables (after the post office was outrageously closed there). Everyone said that's what they wanted - then didn't go in to buy them.

However, if a pub is made so unattractive or soulless then people whether local or not will just not go there. It is a simple as that. When the bright young things that ripped the heart out of the Passfield Oak acted in that way, I'm sure that in their minds they were bringing the old place into this century and attracting younger trendy people etc. It killed the place stone dead. Same as The Robin Hood - it was killed stone dead, not deliberately as I'm sure the owners had thoughts of it being a great new place full of trendy young things - just like the Passfield Oak, but with the same inevitable result.

Ultimately, our home lives are so much more comfortable now - central heating, blockbuster films on-tap, good food cheaply priced in the supermarkets and alcohol at a fraction of the price of pubs - that the proclivity to leave the house for a better environment of a pub is just not the same as it was before we had these things. Meanwhile the pub landlords still have to pay rent - which is impossible with no income.

Although both The Deers Hut and The Links have shown you can refurbish a tired pub, charge premium prices and still be very successful

Completely irrelevant Deers hut freehold so no rent,,,,,,,the links brewery managed no rent,,,,,

For rent read return on capital employed. No difference in principle!

It is such a shame, that pub is steeped in history, it was a superb pub, but it was killed by the previous owners, it had no ambiance, if it was taken under the right wing it could be a roaring success again but alas it seems it is too late. There will be past landlords turning in their graves. So sad
