I suspect related to this:

Cyclist killed in A3 Bramshott car crash

Such an awful and tragic accident.. Absolutely devastating.

i can just picture where it happened as well because o have had an encounter with a bicycle on this stretch of road:

Coming over the dip near the lorry parking space there was a cyclist heading towards the Liphook turn off... It was during the rush hour and the outside lane was choc-a-bloc with no possibility of moving out to overtake the cyclist.

i had to brake and slow down to the speed of the cyclist until it was possible to pull out, and it was difficult to reduce speed from ~60 in such a short time - thank goodness i wasn't going faster.

It is so dangerous to be driving this slowly on a dual carriageway, and at the time i think i contributed to a thread regarding cyclists on that stretch here on talkback and contacted the council too.

There needs to be a cycle lane on this stretch of road. My experience shook me up a lot and could easily have ended the way this morning did.

Perhaps now the need for a cycle lane will be addressed but it should not take a life changing disaster like this for it to happen.

i am so upset that this has happened as it was so predictable and unnecessary.

Very sad news, thoughts and condolences to the family of course.

Just to say that over the Christmas break I encountered a number of cyclists on the A3 past Liphook up to Hindhead, and as a cyclist myself I couldn't understand why anyone would ride on such a busy dual carriageway given the many alternatives? Particularly in damp, grey conditions it just seems an unnecessary route to take with cars and trucks passing you at high speed and close by?

I have to start by saying that I don't know exactly where this crash happened, as I haven't driven past there yet. But I gather it's on the A3 southbound approaching Liphook. It's horrible to hear that a young cyclist died.

There are a couple of old threads about the dangers of cycling on the southbound A3 heading towards Liphook, in one of them I told about my lucky escape when a lorry pushed me into the brambles.
At the time I contacted the Highways agency and the police and questioned why the cycle path stopped so suddenly by the Canadian War Memorial entrance. They wrote back saying something about lack of space and erected an 'End of Cycle Path' sign, which was unsatisfactory. I had a long chat with a senior Hampshire traffic officer who visited the scene and agreed it was scary to cycle on the A3 down that narrow lane, fast downhill stretch, but said it wasn't illegal and many cyclists did it, basically there was nothing he could do.

I told them, that with the new cycle path over Hindhead and the new cycle path from there to the outskirts of Liphook, more and more cyclists would be encouraged to use it and risk the last stretch on the A3, I could envisage a serious accident happening soon. I really envisaged a cyclist death.
Sadly, they didn't really listen, or at any rate do much.

I never risk it anymore, I don't think anyone should, it's really scary, preferring a longer detour through Bramshot Lane or down to Hewshott Lane, but that's local knowledge, the longer distance 'day trippers' heading down from Guildford through to pick up the old A3 Portsmouth Road, south of Liphook, probably have no idea of these detours or the risks.

And yet it really would be so simple to finish off that stretch properly, with just a tiny bit of cooperation from the MOD or whoever owns that bit of common land, then joining up with the old footpath that used to go past the old hospital (old people's village) but has now been blocked. That would take you safely and directly into the heart of Liphook, from where you could continue safely onto Petersfield. But how do you get them to listen?
