Macro Political Issues
- DoomMonger (4th Sep 2004 - 00:58:42)

I have been increasingly bored with the petty local rants on this site of late so thought I would entice some local opinion on some more global issues.
I was thinking the other day that most of Britain's nuclear power stations are due for decomissioning within the next ten years and due to, perhaps misguided, enviromental pressure, no new ones are planned we will become entirely dependent on gas for electricity production (other than a bit of Hydro in Scotland and a few wind turbines). Coal fired power stations were phased out in the "stuff you Scargill" manouvre.
Given that North Sea Gas is on the point of running out we will soon be dependent on Gas from overseas which may well be delivered to us by pipeline from Europe.
We were at war with several other European countries a number of times in the last century.

Next time there is a "disagreement" all they need do is turn the gas off.

DM -

Nuclear power has been given a bad name because of mistakes that were covered up like Windscale and Chernobyl etc. Nuclear power for electricity was originally a by-product from the nuclear weapons programme.

Italy banned all nuclear power stations some time ago and decommissioned them. They thought their country would be safer. Mmm. So just over the border in France, there is a line of nuclear power stations.....

Nuclear power is a good idea - if those running the plants are capable and responsible and are monitored for safety. We don't need any more cover-ups.

Has our government published any plan for what we do when supplies from mainland Europe are interruped? What happens when the gas pipelines from Russia through Turkey go up, due to terrorist attacks or human error?

Good to debate some global issues here.

Freddie

There have been moves in the past by some private concerns to develop "synthetic" oil, gas, petroleum substitutes etc., to no avail. The reputation of nuclear power has been tarnished by unfortunate accidents that have left a lasting impression and the supply of fossil fuels is definitely on the decline. Hydrogen is supposed to be the future fuel, once harnessed properly, as it is supposed to be fairly easy to manufacture and the raw materials are abundant. It will be interesting to see if this particular energy initiative is progressed.

If I wanted to read about "Macro Political Issues" I'd go to MacroPoliticalIssues.com not liphook.co.uk !

Not as fed up as I am with people who rant about the ranters xxx

Ok now thats all done, can we get back to petty local rants? First up, people who post with absurd nicknames, e.g. 'DoomMonger'.

Intelligent debate about global issues!
What here in Liphook, on this site, give us a break.
We can't even get the wheelie bins emptied or a set of traffic lights that work let alone debate about who supplies our power. With our power cut history around here, and electricity already controlled by the French, I think somebody is already giggling switching it on and off anyway.
Oh well back to petty local rants.

Here's a local rant...I agree with Alex!! I also get very irritated by these peculiar names.

If people have something to say they should have the good manners of doing it under their own names. After all this is a community website not a seedy chat room (not that I know anything about those sorts of places).
