Hindhead tunnel - alternative route
- Chris (2nd Sep 2004 - 16:00:07)

Having missed the presentation about this recently I was wondering if this proposal (originally not favoured by the transport authorities) is still being investigated as a serious alternative to the Hindhead tunnel?
As it is likely to cut a swathe across to and via Passfield and Headley would it be in our interests to begin protesting about it (at least those who oppose it)?
What are anyone's views on the proposal?

I am sure this has come up before, but can someone please explain – without going overboard, what on earth has Hindhead got to warrant all this debate and expense of a planning/ building a tunnel and planning alternative routes etc. etc.
Just sit at the southbound traffic lights and look around. It has two garages, a junkyard, and a few shops (if you call them shops!) And an antique shop. Not forgetting the restaurants full of empty seats. The place is either falling to bits! – What is there worth saving?
The most cost-effective solution would be to knock most of it down and put a round a bout in to control the traffic. I know the single-track road is still an issue but it’s the traffic lights that cause the hold-ups.
Did you know, you can drive from GLASGOW to PORTSMOUTH - and the only place you are forced to stop is at the Hindhead Traffic Lights! (The traffic lights on the A3/M25 junction are on only at peak time).

I think the main problem is the single carriageway, compounded by the lights, going north. A roundabout would not, apparently, solve the traffic build-ups that occur in both directions during rush hour. Perhaps the answer is to remove the crossroads and just have the A3, without the Farnham road and therefore without the lights. I think our time for suggesting less complex and less expensive alternatives has gone though.

Couldn't agree more Les, exactly what has Hindhead got around the lights worth keeping, all the buildings have been run down waiting for the big pay out in compensation. Knock the whole place down push the dual carriageway straight through from Bramshott Chase through Hindhead around the outside of the existing road on the Punchbowl and down onto the Thursley section. Filter roads on & off at the existing crossroads. There you go problem solved.
Now the cynical view,
Expensive schools own tracts of land from Bramshott Chase up to Hindhead with many influential parents.
Planning permission given for the development of the old Happy Eater site, lots of revenue and big profits for these rabbit hutches with commanding views of the morning rush hour traffic plus not being able to move off your driveway.
No doubt the National trust will wheel out the old rare lizzard ploy or some obscure litchen only recently found rampantly breeding in the Punchbowl.
Virginia Bottomley giving it the big one about what needs to be done, did not here her when her husband was Minister of Transport, still any excuse to be in the Herald.
Lots of money being made by advisors, so called experts and all the legal teams no doubt working vigorously to get the most mileage out of this.
The big question is do the Government whatever party really want to solve the problem of Hindhead because as Les states you can drive all the way from Glassgow to Portsmouth only having to stop at Hindhead, if you reverse the flow of traffic back towards London following the A3 all the way without the hold up at Hindhead the traffic will only hit London quicker thus the build up at the Tolworth underpass will condense even quicker and will probably end up back to the M25 and beyond. A tadge tricky on the old political front.
Believe it when we see it regarding the Tunnel, in the meantime suggest we think up a catchy name.
How about BRASS (bored reading about silly schemes)

Did anyone see the South Today report earlier this evening from the A3 inquiry?
