Help please - laptop not accepting password
- Verity (29th Nov 2014 - 10:32:28)

Hi lovely Liphook locals,

My gran (yes very silver surfer at nearly 90) has called me this morning from Dorset asking for help but I just don't understand the new windows 8 set up myself at all!

Basically, when she turns on her laptop it's asking for a password - we had got this set up so she didn't need one, so not sure why it is now.

She has tried all the passwords she can think when the one it should be didn't work, but still no luck. t's showing her name and her email address with the box for the password.

Then it doesn't open but says something about the simplepass needing authorisation.

Any ideas at all please?!

Admin is usually the default password hope this helps!

cheers

This is a known problem as the area where the password is kept has been corrupted. Any PC repair shop worth their salt should be able to fix it. My sister had the same problem and took it to Synstar but I thought their minimum charge was high. I think it was £60 so shop round.

I think Dave at U-DO-DIY in Liss might be able and he will be much cheaper but call him first. I would guess £20.

Check granny doesn't have caps lock on before going down the expensive route!

Simplepass is the fingerprint reader, was this set up/ if so she might just need to swipe her scanned finger (Normally index) over the fingerprint reader.

Have you tried no password and enter? CAPS lock etc

Sounds like changes have been made to the PC...

Thank you for all the replies on this, I got her to check the CAPS lock, but will get her to try 'admin' or no password.

The comment on fingerprints is interesting as that kept coming up when I searched on google but it's not a fingerprint type laptop - very strange.

May well be a trip to Dorset next weekend unless we can find someone more local to her to try and help.

Does sound as though a change has been made to the computer - could this have been one of those pop us things, like when it asks if it want to remember your password, etc.?

Don't know much about Windows 8 , as I'm still on Vista!
However, are you still able to log on via Safe Mode with Windows 8?
Once there go to Control Panel and then Biometric Devices and then Change Biometric Settings?
Turn off Simple pass?
Just a thought.
Maybe wrong but as said don't know much about Windows 8

Hi , all Windows 8 are set up either on a local account or using a Microsoft account. A Microsoft account uses your existing email address and password (unless you chose a different one when setting it up) Its worth trying any email passwords she might have used.

Can change when updating to Windows 8.1

See if there are more than 1 user accounts when turning it on? Try local account if present.

Good luck
