Computer Help - Please?
- The Original Jay W (28th Nov 2014 - 14:20:12)

Does anyone know who would be able to rid our computers of unwanted webpages randomly opening up on our computers?

The ones in question are adfoc.us and also aliexpress. They seem to be hijacking the network because they are now on our desktop, laptop and also a kindle (the pages opening on the kindle are particularly unsavoury but thankfully that is only used by an adult). We've runscans via AVG, Microsoft and Malware Bytes - nothing picked up.

I have made enquiries but the general response seems to be "not sure but we'll take it in and run some software through it" (charge a substantial amount of money for each device and it still might not be fixed - this is what happened a while back when we were being redirected to spoof websites - this time it is slightly different).

I dont mind paying to have it fixed but I would like a more positive response to my enquiry - "Yes i've seen that before and it can be fixed by doing x, y and z" . There's lots of advice on google on how to remove it but difficult to tell which is genuine - I'm sure an IT expert would know.

So does anyone know such an IT expert who could help?
And if none of you have experienced these network hijacks, what antivirus are you using? Anyone got E-set?

What make and model of Router are you using? Google search suggests that there might be an exploit affecting some D-Link ones

Hello Jay,

Can you tell me which web browser you are using?

Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome?

Depending on your browser there are 2 or 3 different ways to sort this problem out :)

cheers

Andy

Hi Editor and Andy

Using Internet Explorer on desktop and laptop - kindle of course is Silk but am hoping if PCs are fixed then network hijacking will cease so kindle will be ok again.

Router is TPLink TD W8961ND and is password protected.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

OK Jay,

Initially I would download and run Adblock Plus which is a free program from;

https://adblockplus.org

This should prevent most if not all the unwanted \'popups\' you are getting.

Please note this is not going to cure the Browser Hijacking that you are experiencing, but may be enough cope with the problem on your desktop and laptop computers.

In future I would then use a different browser on the PCs such as Mozilla Firefox. It is quite possible to migrate any Internet Explorer bookmarks to Firefox if you want to keep these.

To actually get rid of the Hijacker (whichever one it is), is a lot more complex. I can send you a set of instructions to do this yourself if you like, it would involve downloading half a dozen free programs and using them to scan each PC, be aware though it will take some time to do this.

With regard to the Kindle -resetting Silk to the factory defaults should do the trick. Please note any bookmarks will be lost!. If you are not sure how to do this either put your email or telephone number on here and I will get in touch with you.

Good luck

Andy

Antivirus doesnt really work anymore ,,, Its still needed to keep the most basic attacks and malware at bay but most of the bad stuff now slips through . If your a business with a number of devices you need to invest in a good firewall with intrusion prevention , web filtering and clean DNS services , Make sure you use strong passwords and change them regularly.... Open DNS will give you a good level of filtering and can be enabled on all devices. All the AV vendors are much of a muchness ... Cleaning infected machines properly normally needs a wipe and rebuild . have a look at www.gov.uk/government/publications/cyber... for some basic advice

Dear Editor

Please would you be so kind as to forward my email address to AndyL?

Thanks Andy, will try adblockplus.

Have cleared history, cache etc from Kindle and used Bing as search engine without anything untoward happening (fingers crossed).

Using Google Chrome on desktop so far so good - will do one at a time. Fairly sure the desktop (used by whole family) is the original culprit.

Will ask if Editor will forward my email address to you, thanks for help already provided.

Hello Jay,

A good scan / removal tool is Sophos, and better still its free.

You can download the Sophos Root Kit tool from their web site here;

Julian.

Jay, I have not heard from the editor & have no way of contacting you.

However I see on this reply page, a general message saying do not rely on editor passing on contact details.
Perhaps you can put your email address on here but backwards so that anything harvesting addresses will not recognise it as one.

Regards

Andy

Hi Andy his details were sent to you yesterday. But you seem to mistype your email address regularly. So, please email editor@liphook.uk with your actual email address and I will forward that to Jay.
