Lift the Anchor
- Tina (27th Aug 2004 - 14:22:29)

Help please somebody.

I have now been living in Liphook for a year. The first time I took the kids round the Anchor for dinner the food was very cold, watery and disgusting. I thought it might be because I went to visit the ladies when the food arrived and took to long. We never went back there for dinner untill we saw the signs for the "new, improved menu." In the menu, the Rump steak is described as succulent and juicy. YOU WHAT? I ordered mine, medium to rare, and could feel my mouth water. Well only untill I took my first bite. URGH, Disgusting. You guest it cold, dried out rubbish. I even tried the chinese one , but have never tasted anything less unlike chinese.

If you comment on the food the waiters tell you there is nothing wrong with it. Could someone please ask them to serve hot, or even warm food. pleaseeeeeeeeeeease

or maybe they need to get a trained chef in there.

Well, that is just my opinion.

The only way to "lift the Anchor" is to lift the current proprietors and staff and replace them with people who are worthy of running what is the centrepiece of the village. At present, "quality" and "customer service" are watchwords for other organisations as they never did apply to the Anchor and no amount of makeovers will disguise the fact that the place is nothing more than a 4th rate dump for underage drinkers and pikies to get drunk in. Nelson and Queen Victoria may have stayed there once but I can't imagine our current queen and admiral of the fleet stopping off, except perhaps as a dare.

Well said. The thing that bugs me about the Anchor is just *dark* it is in there (as in lack of light). My personal choice is the Links - yes it has its faults, but the atmosphere and patronage is a world above the anchor (and i'm a stone's throw away too).

I've eaten there a few times out of convenience and it definitely seems to have noticeably slipped in quality.

I too have my doubts about the Anchor but it's a case of no where else to go - let's hope a new restaurant takes over the Grand Anglais and runs it as a full time venture - I am sure it would make a fortune if it had a nice ambience, friendly staff and good quality reasonably priced food. As for the Anchor the ladies loos are DISGUSTING - I have had the misfortune to visit them three times in all and on all occassions 2 of the 3 have been blocked, none had loo roll and the general appearance was grubby. I even spoke to the landlord Jez who blamed everyone but himself " mothers putting nappies down the loos, kids blocking it by stuffing them full of loo paper". When I suggested he restock the loo rolls he said he said " I only have to check it every hour no more than that" then plonked a 4 pack of loo rolls on the bar top and sadf he was going to re-stockit now - Charming! I was so annoyed about his couldn't care less attitutde I contacted Greene King who sent me a letter the next day saying they were reviewing the comlaint and would get back to me shortly. Over a month has gone by and I am still waiting for a reply. In the meantime the pub has won "pub of the year" for it's increase in profits so I guess it shows they just don't give a damn. As long as the money rolls in they are happy. I hope someone does open another restaurant in town because it's only when their profits are hit will they do anything about it.

Not the best place to go when we went and had some food which was very dissapointing , we complained and in the words of the then manager" what do you expect for the money you pay "

Thankfully this person has now left but it does not seem to have improved..

And it is certainly not the village pub ?????

There did used to be a good French bistro/resto in Station Road. Not sure why it closed but judging by the reported poor numbers of customers, it was not supported well enough.

Don't forget that the village has changed enormously and the population is growing very fast now - so perhaps there is a future for something like the Grand Anglais under new ownership.

Check out the window of the Grand Anglais. There are impressive new menus for this establishment and the new management plan to open soon.

Plus ca change!
