Speed limit change - Passfield
- jo herridge (24th May 2009 - 12:48:17)

I drove through this morning and the speed limit has now dropped to 40 mph, although for the 2 drivers that overtook me I was obviously going too slow for them

Jo

The same almost happened to us on Firday night. I had pulled out of Hollywater, and for some reason the 40 sign was very obvious - perhaps because they are new and clear. The other car behind us was right up my rear and 'pushing' me on.

It would be helpful if signs informing drivers of new speed limits were placed so local people(who perhaps think they know the limits) were made aware, rather than leave it to chance.

I was so pleased when the new signs went up.

However, that is the only change in Passfield (new signs), no one is taking any notice of the 40 limit whatsoever. I was actually hooted at a couple of times BEFORE I was overtaken by an idiot yesterday. Luck was on the side of the driver waiting to turn right out of Hollywater Road as he was dithering - if [he] had pulled out when he saw my indicator flashing 'left' as most cars do - there would have been a head on collision.

It beggars belief - it really does.

We need some police cameras - even if they are only temporary people with hand held ones - just to get the message across.

Yet again i was overtaken today for driving "too slow". A young lad in a blue car overtook me because I was doing 40. It is only a matter of time before a nasty accident occurs mainly because some people are oblivious to road speed signs. They are clear enough to me so why oh why do others not see them, or is it they do and they will drive at whatever speed takes their fancy?

I spoke to Stuart Reynolds of HCC when he had advised that the speed limit change order had been approved and advised that there should be traffic calming to uphold the speed limit change as many people are inclined not to stick to designated limits. He was non-commital but perhaps we should keep lobbying HCC by writing to him (stuart.reynolds@hants.gov.uk) or by adding a complaint/response via the HCC website:
www3.hants.gov.uk/roads/...

James Arbuthnott was instrumental in helping as it was in response to the Conservatives "Village 30" article in the "In Touch" magazine that I statrted to write to all and sundry about the speeding issues along this stretch of road. Perhaps James could help us to lobby HCC to bring in some calming measures.

I think you are right, people are completely oblivious or just seem to completely ignore speed limits. I have problems on Portsmouth Road (mentioned on this site before) with drivers riding right up your backside, overtaking at speed, flicking rude signs, flashing lights and tooting at you if you dare to drive at 30mph or worse still, slow down to turn into your own drive.

Not sure what the answer as I have witnessed drivers of all descriptions committ the offending crimes.

It makes you want to scream...but the truth is, as you rightly say, it is only a matter of time before an awful accident occurs.

We have already had numerous awful accidents at Passfield junction - that is why the speed has been reduced.

Unfortunately, the 'straight' has always been used to 'speed' and the junction is just seen (or not) as an inconvenient blip on their personal race track. It is exactly these inconsiderate and selfish drivers [that have no consideration of possible consequences] that should should be fined very large amounts or taken off the road completely.

What is the bloody point of 40 signs, when the 50 signs didn't work. The signs should have been put up in conjuction with a sustained effort on the part of the traffic police to 'educate' ofending drivers. Without some sort of incentive / penalty these bloody idiots will carry on endangering lives, and it is us locals who have to go out and scrape the pieces off the tarmac!

It makes me so cross!

It is great that we have police interaction with the public with schemes like Street Watch - but here - where we have accidents every 5 bloody minutes - not a blinking policeman in sight.....................

[editor - Dawn, the usual procedure is that the police allow people to get used to the new limit for a few weeks, then they will take action. Drivers have no excuse then for thinking it was still 50]

Driving along the same stretch of road today (and obeying the new speed limit) I was overtaken by a Coomer's lorry who put his foot down and must have been doing at least 60mph before disappearing out of sight. Thankfully he didn't meet another idiot coming in the opposite direction.

Re: Speed limit change - Passfield

You should report the incident. I am sure they are keen to know if their drivers are breaking the law...

Re: Speed limit change - Passfield
- Sophie (29th May 2009 - 14:07:49)

Oh great - its about time the speed limit was changed there - when i took my driving lessons through passfield i couldn't believe it was a 50 in the first place after all the horrible accidents i've heard about. Felt very uncomfortable driving at 50 considering its not uncommon to find bikes / horses / people wandering along the side of the road and people overtaking even whilst it was a 50.

Re: Speed limit change - Passfield
- Helen (30th May 2009 - 08:55:23)

Signs will never make ANY difference. I live right beside one of the fairly new 20mph signs as you get closer into the village. However the amount of people who accelerate going into it instead of slowing down is outrageous! Large lorries seem to also glide through at about 40 without easing off!

The most satisfying part of the day is the early morning rush hour when cars have to crawl through...but cars coming the other way heading out of the village down the London Road seem to think that as they have queued up from the centre of the village have the right to then shoot down the straight London Road by right!

20mph merging into a 30mph zone?...totall rubbish, most drivers take to adding the two speeds together and put their foot down as soon as they can. In fact as I type this my point is being made...zoom....zoom...there they all go!

Re: Speed limit change - Passfield
- Gen (30th May 2009 - 15:27:41)

Sophie - When you were learning to drive, it would have been quite reasonable to feel uncomfortable when driving at 50 on a rather dangerous stretch of country road. Especially since the speed limit has now been dropped to now 40 mph.

Perhaps some signs to educate drivers might be in order such as:

"40 mph is not the MINIMUM speed, but the MAXIMUM permitted"

OK
who knows who I have to write to to get some 'enforcement' going on?

Have just been overtaken on approaching the junction AGAIN

Do I have to phone the Isle of Wight, or is there a special highways patrol that can be contacted???

Ideas anyone.........................................

May be Chief Inspector Kedge could supply a radar gun for locals to use and record numbers. See this BBC news article.

Sophie,

Glad to hear you appreciate the need to drive safely and considerately through Passfield and on country roads in general. However I am suprised that no one pointed out while you were learning to drive that pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists do not just wander down the road. Most of us are travelling somewhere the same as you are and are just as entitled to use the road as anyone else - please do not treat us merely as an inconvenience or hazard.

You probably didn't mean your comment to be taken in that way, and I am not 'having a go', but it doesn't help when a lot of motorists seem to think they have a right to be in front of everything else on the road, and that any self-propelled road user should move out of the way because they aren't in a hurry.

Keep on driving safely.

Re: Speed limit change - Passfield
- barbara (8th Jun 2009 - 12:17:24)

I appreciate that car drivers are not the only road users but is it fair to the horse to take it on such a busy stretch of road as this Passfiield road? The law needs changing now to reflect the increased amount of traffic on roads such as these It surely cannot be pleasant for the horse to be on such a busy road?

Re: Speed limit change - Passfield

Does anyone know the contact details of Chief Inspector Kedge. If that's who I have to write to?
