More than one election
- Beth Marr (20th May 2009 - 17:54:23)
Is it me, or is the furore over MP's expenses and the European elections casting the other election that is looming into the shade?
We also have County Council elections happening in a couple of weeks, and as yet, it has barely garnered a mention in the national or the local news.
Whilst many may be considering a protest vote, or a non vote in the Europeans, they may also be missing out on the opportunity to affect politics at a more local level. I have had circulars through my door for the Conservative candidate, and the Lib Dem candidate, and that is it. How on earth do independents or those from other parties expect the British public to turn out and vote, if they can't even make the effort to tell us what their policies would be.
I would also take this opportunity to commend the Lib Dem candidate who was brave enough to face the wrath of the public the other day by knocking on doors and being more than prepared to engage in discussion about expenses claims and many other hot topics.

Did your Lib Dem candidate fully support the idea that any sitting MP (or councillor) of any party that has claimed expenses (whether within the rules or not) that were not 100% necessary for that member to perform his or her duties as an MP (or councillor) should immediately stand down and allow the local constituency party to decide who should then contest the seat?
That is what people are now expecting.

Hi Mike
Firstly, he isn't MY Lib Dem candidate. I simply felt that being brave enough to knock on doors in a week when Politicians is a dirty word deserved some acknowledgement. I certainly haven't seen hide nor hair of anyone else doing this.
For the record though, we did discuss the expenses debacle and I for one was satisfied with his reply.
Regards
Beth

I will be interested to see what the turn out will be for all the forthcoming elections, be it at local or euro level.
This will answer many questions about the damage that has been recently done by the trough feeders in the House.
Considering what has happened I will for the first time ever, question why I should bother, nothing at the moment would convince me that they are all not as bad as one another.
This will not be an easy decision to make in light of sacrifices many people have made in order to give me my right to vote.
What a shame and how very sad.

Steve,
This is by and large the whole point. Those who have been exposed as thieves cannot possibly expect re-election, although I reckon some will think that we will have become bored with the subject at some point, eventually, and they can get on with bizz as usual. Well, I'm not, and I simply cannot vote for the party of my choice now, but I will vote.

Steve,
Yes we may see a decline in those participating in the June elections and this may be because voters are inceasingly disenchanted with the major parties.
Not one of the majors has ever represented my views accurately and I increasingly feel unable to tell them that.
More likely, however, is that we will see ever greater swings towards independents that now have new avenues open to communicate with us and demonstrate that their views may be closer to our own.
Up to now they have not been very organised and could not compete with the party machines and the real perception that a vote for an independent is a wasted vote.
The revelations of the last couple of weeks coupled with the increasing disenfranchisement of parliament just might sway opinion against these dogmas.
Meanwhile the independents are getting more organised and creditable. Check out the Jury Team. Fear of this is what is prompting many incumbent members of the house to suggest that an early election is necessary else this kind of groundswell might rise to floodlike proportions.
It could get interesting.

Interesting. I too have only had one leaflet delivered/posted - from the Liberal Democrats, who have addressed the letter personally with full titles to my husband, my son and myself. Its main point was to highlight the over priced - waste of more tax payers money by the Conservative led council on the £40 million refurbishment of Winchester council offices!!.
It has also been very fascinating to listen to my 20year old, talking about what his intentions were to vote (something he has not been previously interested in), and convincing his friends to vote UKIP in the next election. It seems that the new generation is just as fed up as we are - but are more inclined to vote differently than we have up until now. The major parties really need to change - apologies for wrong judgements and poor excuses are not enough to convince the new generation voters.

Am I right in assuming that we have no county election in Liphook, just the European vote ?

Alan,
Follow your link and scroll down to the 5th page where you will see the county candidates listed there under Headley (Not Bramshott and Liphook).
They are:
Sam James Conservative
Richard Thomas Clifford Lib Dem
John Michael Tough Labour
Hope this helps you to vote.
